  2. You can do what I did... on Internet Communications While At Sea? · · Score: 1

I have my own website and being a PERL programmer, I wrote my own photo gallery script for my website. I then setup an email address just for my gallery.. Then I wrote another script that is run every 10 minutes from a cron job that logs into the email account, downloads any messages, deletes them and then posts them into the gallery. I used my cell phone to take pictures and from it, I would send my pics to that email address and within 10 minutes, it would be posted in the gallery, with the text of the message being its description.

Now I set this up to be able to post any pics quickly and easily, however, it also works with standard email. You could just work offline and create a message for each picture and store them in your outbox. Then, when you do have access, you can send an entire batch at once. The coding is actually quite simple, and I would be willing provide you with my photo gallery script, I even wrote an auto installer for it. Just upload one file, set permissions and run it in your browser.

    Hope you find your solution.

  3. As a hosting provider... on Reasonable Expectation of Privacy From Web Hosts? · · Score: 1

...I can tell you that there are many situations in which access to a client's data is required and unavoidable. We put a clause in our TOS that basically informs clients that because they are in a shared hosting environment (i.e. not the only web site on the server) we may need to access their data occasionally while researching and fixing a problem. This is because we can't control what the other clients are putting on their sites and sometimes vulnerable applications are being used by them. We monitor logs and processes for problems and if we notice any irregularities, we do a complete audit of every client to ensure that we eliminate the problem completely. Because of this, we recommend that all clients encrypt their data for extra security.

ANY shared hosting environment holds the same risks. You can't control what everyone is doing, all you can do is lock the server up as much as possible and keep a close eye on it to minimize the risks as much as possible. Let's face it, if you want more control, privacy and security, then owning your hardware is the way to go. That way you don't have to worry about some young, inexperienced developer from another web site opening up security holes because of bad code.

AND I still have not seen a launch up close.. I live only about 45 minutes south in Melbourne, Fl and have tried MANY times to go and watch one, but with launch delays, it makes it very hard to do. It's a crap shoot. Throw the dice, take the drive and hope it goes up. Probably not worth it, especially with all the security they have now and with all the cams they have covering each launch, you can't get a better view in person.

But I hear it is a cool experience none-the-less, but I have given up. Only if a launch is scheduled on a day off for me will I attempt it again..

This is my most used method for recovering data from a failed drive that was not backed up properly.. Most of the time the freezer would work.. I held a drive and a weird upside-down angled position for 30 minutes before.

Also, for some reason, tapping the drive as it was being read would allow it to work.. This usually fixes the hang at boot problems of a failed drive. I just try tapping it, varying the frequencies and verosity of the taps each attempt until it was enough for a successful boot. I think it would cause the head to skip the bad boot sector or something, but I really don't know why it works, just that it does some times.

  6. In my experience... on What Do Geek Squad Technicians Actually Do? · · Score: 1

...having been doing computer repair for an outsourced IT company for the past several years, they don't do anything good.. I have had many clients tell me that they had originally had Geek Squad try to fix their system and were unsuccessfull. Some having spent several hours trying to fix it. I go in, fix the problem in much less time, or with much greater ease, and the client is just dumbfounded. They can't believe it. I still can't believe it. If you are a major national chain offering these services, wouldn't you want to provide the best possible service? It seems to me like these companies are just playing the numbers.

Technology is invading more and more of the average persons life, even families considered in the "poverty" level of income have computers, cell phones, and more. The population of the US is breaking 300 million, even if only 10% (30m) of them utilize their services just once, at say a cost of $100/hour for just one hour, that's $3 billion of revenue. They can make their money and get out when the going gets tough.

Being national does give them this advantage. Pay the techs a low salary because they don't need to hire the more experienced people who demand higher salaries, and it just means more profit. And to make it worse, even if those people who used their services and won't ever use their services again, most will still continue to buy their technoloy needs from these places because it is easy, convenient, and economical.

As a small, local IT company, the company I work for would be bankrupt in a short time having earned a bad reputation for doing such a bad job... The small guys HAVE to be better in order to survive, but the big guys can do what they want because there is always someone else, far away they can swindle..

  7. Too easy. on Ask ISP Owner Barry Shein About the Spam Wars · · Score: 1

Ok, this is probably the easiest and most strait-forward way to deal with spam today. Make SMTP require a "username/password" before sending out the email, just like pop3 asks for it before giving it to you. Also, the server for whatever domain name is in the "From" field should be the ONLY server allowed to send/relay outgoing email for that domain.

    Example:
I get an email account from "somedomain.com".
    It is "me@somedomain.com".
When I send email from this account, it should connect to somedomain.com instead of my ISP, and send my username and password for authorization. (same name/pass used to check it)
Then, if authorized, the server can relay it.

Does this sound too simple of an idea?? I mean, if all SMTP servers required authorization before sending, then that would cut back on spam quite I bit, I think.. Plus it would be easier to track where it came from.

I don't know, I may be setting myself up to get burned here, but please tell me if I am wrong in my assumptions.

Same thing at my company here.. I am the lead developer, and my boss knows nothing.. He wants to always jump on the newest and latest fads without considering all the technical aspects of a project. Many times it has happened where he quotes a development time of 2 weeks to a client, but because of the scale and complexity of the aplication we're building, that turns into 2 months. Needless to say, clients aren't happy.. There's only 2 techs here, it's a small company, and we are always pulling our hair out because our boss told a client they could get something that just isn't possible.. I would like to know how to get him out of the loop, he needs to stick to just running the company.. Let someone who knows my job sit down with the client and discuss their wants/needs and what is possible or not..

  10. Useless on Open Relays, Free Speech, and Virus Propagation · · Score: 1

All this blacklisting going on today is useless in my opinion. So an open relay gets blacklisted, whoopee, the spammer just moves to a new one.. They are very good about finding and utilizing open relays. It's annoying and time consuming to try to stop them and the spam they send.. We try to do as much as we can, but the spam is still getting through.. I have not yet found a 100% guarenteed way of stopping spam without limiting the capabilities of our honest clients. Maybe I am missing something, I am, after all, still in newbie land.

  11. Same Here... on Are SPAM Blacklists Unreasonable? · · Score: 1

Same problem as you, we were an open relay (my bad) but we have since closed the holes many months ago, but are still blacklisted on many servers.. I understand, and I write them and get removed from their list, but there is another problem I have seen arise from the use of blacklists..

That is that our server is being blacklisted by some servers because OTHER **UNAFFILIATED** servers in the same CO-LO facility are spammers.. We have absolutely no affiliation with these businesses, yet we are still being blacklisted because we are on the same network..

Good example of blacklists getting carried away and the potential problems than can arise.. This has hindered us because we host web sites and many customers are complaining because some of their emails are being bounced.. this does not reflect well on us, they don't care if it's our fault or not, just that they can't do what they were told they could do..

Has this happened to anyone else?
