"WE HELPED SADDAM IN THE 1980S/WE IGNORED HIS GASSING KURDS
The simple response to all arguments along these lines is: "So what?" Even if
were wrong to support Saddam (or the Taliban, etc.), does that mean we should
stick to the wrong policy for consistency's sake? According to this view we
should have turned a blind eye to the Holocaust because we'd turned a blind
eye to the events that led up to the Holocaust. This is a byproduct of a
culture which considers hypocrisy a greater crime than, well, real crimes.
We've supported lots of bad characters in the past, for reasons which, in
fairness, need to be looked at on a case-by-case basis. Al Qaeda, for
example, may be some blowback from our support of the mujahedeen in the 1980s
-- but that doesn't mean we were wrong to support the mujahedeen. There was a
Cold War going on, after all. And even if we were wrong, how does that excuse
al Qaeda for 9/11? Blaming America first may feel good, but it hardly
absolves the bad guys for their actions, any more than slavery justifies a
black guy murdering a 7-Eleven clerk.
Even if you stipulate that we did wrong before, does that mean we shouldn't do
right now? Antiwar types throw around these non sequitors as if the implied
hypocrisy settles the current argument, when all it does is imply hypocrisy."
If you're not white or with white people, you generally experience great discrimination at the US border crossing over from Canada.
um...The US was not attacked by white Canadians.
It was attacked by young radical Islamic fundamentalist men. Does it suprise you that greater attention is paid to people fit this description? Or would you prefer we waste every last resource frisking old ladies from Alberta just so it does not make you feel *uncomfortable*. Oh the discrimination!
I am not quite sure of your definition of "self-respecting". If one is to truly respect oneself you should do whatever it takes to protect ones physical body. If you feel like you, or whatever son or daughter you wish to send to be killed, will have self-respect by yelling gung ho and going over the hill blind...(It is just not Marine-Like to mess around with those RC car..computer things) go right ahead.
Personally I would prefer to have the most amount of information possible before I entered the surreal very short moments of combat. Combat almost always falls into the military term of "hurry up and wait". Intelligence (knowledge of the enemy) always trumps bravado.
"No bastard ever won a war by dying for his country. He won it by making the other poor dumb bastard die for his country."
Yes this guys computer has problems but talk about warning signs. It is almost like somebody who is shocked when their car breaks down when it has been hard to start and sounding like crap for the last month. Computers are just like any other machine...they usually let you know when they are sick:(
Now, since I live in Canada and shipping computers around is a pain in the ass, I opted for the full OnSite service plan. All was well, the system rocked, my 22" monitor kicked ass, I was in heaven. 9 months that lasted. Then, mysteriously, June 6, it went black like the case. And it didn't come back, it wouldn't even turn on. Fans spun up, that was it. After a couple days of being left to sulk, it started working again. I was concerned, but glad it was back. It worked again for about a month, and then, in the middle of a game, it went black again, and it hasn't come back. Now, I figured, for it to shut down suddenly like that, maybe the CPU is overheating. It's not overclocked or anything, but maybe something had gone wrong. I immediately opened the case and checked the CPU -- it was cool to the touch. So now, I try removing non-essential cards, and that doesn't help. So I call tech support (long distance, because their toll free number doesn't work from where I am in Canada, even though they claim it works for North America and Europe. Unless I missed some fine print in NAFTA, we're still a part of N. America). They get me to try a couple of things, like unplugging the power supply and letting it reset, and that doesn't help.
"...but the fact of the matter is that the 2-4 page legal sized forms we have to fill out are represented terribly on the little screen."
You should not have to *display* your entire form for data entry. Your paper based from is made up of fields that are displayed in a fashion so they are easy to read on legal size paper.
For data entry these fields need to be displayed for entry and viewing only. You would have plenty of room in a PDA enviornment because you are eliminating the whitespace and irrelevant data from paper based legal.
According to this recent/. article [http://slashdot.org] the US Census is looking to move to PDA for mobile data entry and the *industry* states the technology is there. If a PDA can handle the above your application is entirely possible.
Being able to use your computer with the same ease as a telivision would not require elevating the public's training to that of a astonaut.
How nice of you to ponder whether you will pass on your infinite knowledge to the 'common man' 'As much as I'd like'. I find it insulting to other professionals (Economists, Doctors, Lawyers, etc) or anyone else not deemed computer worthy by your standards. This only reinforces the articles argument of "arrogant and elitist" attitudes in the tech industry.
According to your argument it would not be beneficial for auto mechanics to have people to know how their car works. Because in reality all drivers are out to do is steal their jobs. Did you ever think that some people could give a flying fuck what a bit bucket is? They just want their computer to work.
I have not seen broad support for Flash recently here on/. A recent high dollar Flash commercial site:
http://whatisthematrix.warnerbros.com
brought issues up whether Flash is the just the thing for the Internet/ecommerce/navigation/content delivery/etc. I believe most people agreed it cannot be all of these things.
The two websites are in Flash but dramatically different. One of them has a whole lot of money thrown at it and the other is well....I thought it was great. I found the clips small in size but graphic and sound quality was great. I don't believe Flash is something that is going to change the universe as claimed by some people but I find it a great medium to deliver 'content' like this.
Great site. Thanks for the Saturday morning humor.

I don't understand why you would back up files locally on a network.
I think it would be best to have all networked machines backup to a common point.
Shoot you can even have a program to go and grap these files taking this resposibility away from Debbie in accounting.
You aslo mimimize instances of backup (and failure) and only introduce a workable internal bandwith issue.
Just my thoughts. Hope everyone is having a good summer.
