I disagree, Usenet was always store and forward, Google are simply using a ridiculously long expire time in this case. There was never any restriction on how long a site could keep the postings for, they were/are simply constrained by available disk space.
Try installing Solaris 9 x86 sometime (next to impossible due to the restricted driver support) and then install Solaris 10 x86 (most video drivers work, broad network card support now etc.) They still have a way to go but if the improvements continue at this rate then it won't be long before the device support in Solaris is equal to Linux. Sun's far more committed to getting this fixed than IBM ever was.
Hmm, looking at finance.yahoo.com seems to show that Sun lost $388m last year, so even presuming no improvement on Sun financials this year, this purchase would half their loss to under $200m. Doesn't seem to me that a company with some $10 billion in revenue would take 20 years to close that gap (one other purchase and the're there:->)
Yes but Duke Nukem is actually past it's release date. I can't believe that we are wasting time calling something "vaporware" before it's release date. Make/. look a little bit biased you konw.
Of course none of this matters, I can't believe people are wasting their time arguing this and ignoring the fact we will get to see/use the Solaris source code.
ouch, are you suggesting they are engaging in a marketing exercise, never, they couldn't now they are open source's friend (and would you like to buy a bridge?)
Stop the world, I want to get off as there is no sign of intelligent life here.
As an asside, they are planning to ban parents from taking photos during school swimming carnivals soon here in Australia for fear of pedophiles taking photographs.
People are trying to look like they are doing something even though their proposed "solutions" make no sense.
Err, you fault Sun for not backing Solaris x86 (not enough device drivers, no partner support etc) then draw the conclusion that that means they are not allowed to fix the problem. Sun isn't expecting IBM to just jump on the bandwagon, they know IBM needs to be convinced.
Sun is finally supporting Solaris x86 properly and pushing to ensure that the software is there for it too.
So you think that OpenOffice isn't quality ? What about NFS ? What about all the work on BSD ? The list goes on and they score on both quality and quantity.
Oh please, stop mis representing the system! If you don't want your preferences to go to the minor parties then you just vote below the line and assign the preferences yourself, if you can't figure out how to do that much then you shouldn't be voting anyway. (and Howard is really one of the worst leaders we ever had, Latham may be poll driven but so far he hasn't deliberately tried to mislead us.)
Show me where Sun ever said open source was bad, look to Openoffice etc if you want to see their opinion on the topic.

Well, Solaris has actually allowed this for a long time via lxrun (all that's needed is to translate the linux system calls to Solaris, Xwindows etc remain the same) so all as they are doing is moving it into the kernel. It's a logical step as far as I can see. Does Wine mean that linux lost to Windows, of course not.

and what problem does Sun have?

because Sun long ago paid up for ip rights to sys5.
