  2. Re:I don't doubt this story at all on No More Intel Inside, Apple Plans To Use Its Own Custom-Built Chips in Mac (bloomberg.com) · · Score: 1

Why would a prospective Mac user want to buy now - instead of just waiting? This leak may have cost Apple more than Intel.

  3. Can't engineer around stupid on Tesla Says Autopilot Was Engaged During Fatal Model X Crash (theverge.com) · · Score: 1

He was warned. You simply can't engineer around a human operator who ignores input from the automated systems. Maybe the real answer to this is to have the Autopilot brake and move to the slower right lane after 2 ignored attempts to get the driver's attention. Even then, drivers will likely ignore input as they're focussed on their phones/tablets/etc.

  4. J2ME, SavaJe, etc.. on Oracle Wins Revival of Billion-Dollar Case Against Google (bloomberg.com) · · Score: 4, Interesting

Sun and later Oracle were so fixated on the nonfunctional J2ME stack that they didn't see Google coming. Sun had the skeleton of what later became Android with the SavaJe acquisition but didn't have the funds or desire to make it happen. They (and later Oracle) failed to adequately invest in mobile and now Google has. Larry is simply pissed that someone other than himself is making money on something he neglected to capitalize on. To Lawsuit Larry, that's a crime - to anyone else, it's called business.

  5. What about the 10-18 age range? Since brains are under their most rapid developmental phases between those ages, shouldn't those be the focus of these kinds of studies?

Once upon a time in Redmond, they argued (and won) that every PC sold should have a Windows license sold with it.

Since that time, PC sales have slowed and MS is hungry, so poof! a new "S" (Subscription) model that allows MS to bleed the unwashed masses of some low-ish amount of money per month or year to keep their PC running (always just less than buying windows outright..) What MS choses not to see is that the OS is becoming largely irrelevant in the new web/cloud world and their S model has no customer pull other than ChromeOS or any other 'net centric device model.

Bezos couldn't care less. There's absolutely no penalties for getting caught and trademark/patent protection in these kinds of product categories is nonexistent due to the cost of prosecuting them.

  14. They say blockchain currencies are based on trust, but can you trust anything Maduro says? Venezuela is another proof point as to why Communism and Nepotism are usually found together. Maduro will undoubtedly funnel what's left of the treasury to his family as they exit the country, just as Chavez did.

Strategically re-home existing projects staffed by older, more expensive employees to offshore or H-1B hires.
Make sure to discourage long-term employees from internal mobility, preferring instead to lay them off as their projects are re-homed (see above)

  17. Yes to Ringworld, if done right.

  18. There's enough character development and epic storyline in Ringworld to make an entire franchise. I'm not sure the current Hollywood mindset can think beyond sequels, though. I'd rather they didn't make it than make it badly.
