This only means that the subscription/account model surpasses the single payment model. How many times did World of Warcraft get downloaded illegally? Zero? Oh yeah.
Blizzard had a promo recently where they were giving away Diablo 3 and a bunch of other ingame loot for WoW, because they are afraid of people leaving the World of Warcraft game out of sheer boredom.
I think if you have to give a game away to keep your audience, you've got major fucking problems. Oh look, fucking ninja pandas!!! Jumping sharks!!!
Mathematicians should make patents, and then hand the rights over to the EFF, if you ask me. Then the patents could become open source, so to speak.
I think I'm calling here for an Open Patent format so that much like the GPL, we could get patents on things that we will want to allow EVERYONE to use.
But here's the rub. Mathematicians need money to create things and feed their kids too. They typically get grants to do work from large corporations and from governments. The only reason these folks get money to do the work in the first place is because they are promising that the fruit of their labour goes to the corporation or the government that is funding the research.
My guess is that the Labs part of Creative Labs pays people to come up with this stuff. Now had Carmack decided his algorithm was any good he could have patented it through Id Software whenever he figured it out, which was probably proved back in 1995 or thereabouts. It was at least theoretical in his mind then, probably. Had he seen what Creative was planning, he could have protected everyone from it, but you know Id Software is also in business to make money so if they come up with a new game engine you have to pay big bucks to license it. Rage's engine has very few houses using it probably because of the steep price tag. So he's not giving the technology he discovers away.
But there is a huge difference between charging for an engine and charging for a algorithm and Creative didn't charge... they leveraged. It's probably not ideal but it's not worst-case scenario. It's not SCO tactics.:D
Actually Carmack might find himself in hot water over this if the patent holders (Creative Labs) get litigious, which they undoubtedly will because in cases like these the patents are there so that they can be used to extort funds, much like trolls guarding a bridge, forcing payment in order for permission to pass.
I wonder if Id had previously settled with Creative about this patent issue, or not -- because Doom 3 was the most successful product launch for the company to date at over 3.5mil copies sold. That could be a big payday for Creative Labs if Id didn't contract this properly.
The problem is if you're a criminal and you want to pin something on a sucker, if you have a dude with his life posted online then you can set the poor guy up. I wouldn't ever recommend posting every move you make to the internet because at some point someone will use it against you. This world is predatory in nature.
We will create and use our own internet and if you have one of those chips on your computer, we'll disable your access to it. Thanks Government for giving us a way of checking if someone is controlled by you!!
Well if the IRS is going after Google, then there are quite a few more companies that they will be going after as well because about every fortune 500 company is in Bermuda for tax reasons. I was over there recently and let me tell you something. Bermuda is overpriced and it's not that good of a vacation place, but more importantly is that it's loaded to the gills with money from the USA. Google is following a corporate tax model, and they are being picked on for doing what everyone else is doing.
I disagree with the sole-psychological position regarding prodigy children. This is a combination of genetics, diet of the mother during pregnancy, diet of the child, parental structure and disposition, parent factor upbringing and yes psychology does play a part as well. Knowing our strengths is how we can maximize our potential, yet knowing them isn't enough. Acting on them is what is needed.
Some day every child will be exactly like this one if we could figure out how to recreate the conditions present in his body at the time of his birth right through to his first steps. My guess is that every child could be this way and what great things we could accomplish as a species with such advantages.
I have to admit... it's nice to see more companies jumping in the ring to compete for our streaming dollars. If Dish has some good shows I'm gonna sign up. It used to be people would only sign up for one network for their TV.... and now we could potentially sign up for many different streaming networks so that's a win/win for everyone.
You have no idea about what I'm talking about. Screwing it up is not the same at all as making a mistake. Screwing it up is making the company fail more than it succeeds. It would be hard to argue, losses permitted, that Apple has failed, wouldn't it?
I'd say he did not. Would he claim to more? Doubtful. He's the kind of awesome guy that would never claim to something more. And that is why he didn't screw up.
My point here is that most CEOs screw up. If you are successful, it's because you didn't. There is no better state for a CEO.
Most people don't know that Meg was with Dreamworks during their heyday and she directed eBay to some amazing success.
She's 100% awesome.
I think this is a great move for HP and I hope that she can fix the company that Leo Apthaker broke, mostly because I really like HP and I was really sad to see them going down the wrong path.
Like, if you have a normal website with normal website crap, it's not going to be confiscated.
I'm not sure I agree. Look at the recent USA tax-grab on former USA citizens living in Canada, even if the Canadians have not lived in USA for thirty or more years. The USA is becoming more and more draconian every year. Who is to say they wouldn't simply annex a domain that was making a lot of money and re-purpose it if they can do so using whatever draconian false-hope reason they can come up with?
All these replies to my comment that refer to begging the question are trolls.
From a previous response I made:
It is assumed and unproven; suggested yet still not proven. The question was when, therefore the question posed was asserting proof without proof. I love you hair-splitters. I really do.
It is suggested the USA is on a collision course with destruction. No evidence was provided. None offered either because I feel as though there is enough available. However the assertion itself begs the question, but I'm asserting that it's allowed to.
Not happy with all the hairsplitting going on here. Stop it.
Once it's dead, the horde of Java "programmers" can go back to being fry cooks like they were before Java was created.
What is wrong with being a fry cook? That can be a very demanding and challenging job. Java programmers are more suited for rock-breaking work, tbh. Maybe a job at Starbucks if they are hipster.
This only means that the subscription/account model surpasses the single payment model. How many times did World of Warcraft get downloaded illegally? Zero? Oh yeah.
And SWTOR? Uh... zero, also.
Good correction! If Slashdot was like Reddit I could change my post to reflect your correction, but we're still stuck with it the way it is.
Here is what an ethical Facebook does:
Remove all access to people from Thailand until they join THIS century/millennium.
Here is what Facebook would probably do, since they are evil:
Offer King fucknuts a backdoor pass to every Thai user's accounts for a hefty fee.

Only when the one dude who makes FFFUUUUUUU comics is sleeping.
It is a crime to file a phony DCMA request.
Hi I'm from the future (that's how I have such a low UID).
Just letting you guys know that ripping a hole in space-time is a really bad idea.

By printing more suckers.

I was under the impression that you outsource to SAVE money. My perception is changed.
You have no idea about what I'm talking about. Screwing it up is not the same at all as making a mistake. Screwing it up is making the company fail more than it succeeds. It would be hard to argue, losses permitted, that Apple has failed, wouldn't it?
Are we splitting hairs here wiki-linker?

Which group do you fall into, AC? Gonna guess the first but I could be begging the question.
