The internet is a collection of ideas, presented to users in a vast array of increasingly easier to use methods, by a plethora of individuals, groups, small businesses, corporations and governments, for multiple purposes involving money, fact and/or opinion. No single group of aligned parties shall control the Internet, or the Internet shall be no longer valid.
Neat stuff. I think it's important to note that Boot Camp might be included in the next version of MacOS because of Vista's license that prohibits the use of virtual environments like Parallels. I happen to really like how Parallels switches between the OSes, like flipping a page almost.;-)
I sold a setup to a customer in my store a while ago who loved how Parallels and XP worked, but I had to also sell him a full security setup for XP due to obvious reasons. You would be surprised how many customers have no idea what it takes to keep their machines secure on Windows systems. They figure that since they are buying Mac, they don't have to lock it down if they put Windows on it. Boy are they wrong! LOL
If you don't have more indy bands, go get their stuff!! Pay artists directly! Why support RIAA by buying their music, when they are using YOUR MONEY in a way that is morally wrong?
Darwin said it best when he said, "I love fools' experiments. I am always making them."
And it would seem that producing valid data in the form of a chart, publishing it and then going after someone for publicizing your findings is fool hearty at best, but sadly also very mean spirited and it works against the mission of the scientists in the long run.
I will not seek to help profit those who would still falsely believe in a captive audience, so therefore this publisher is coming off my reading list.
You wouldn't be allowed to make a banana split, and you'd only be able to eat a slice banana with Kelloggs brand cereals.
That has to be the most insightful comment I have seen on Slashdot pertaining to the MPAA.
Hey doesn't an old lady in Iowa own the patent to the banana split and every movie after 1950 with the banana split in it will have to help keep her grand kids in fast cars, coke & hookers?
You know, I think that gross margin is really GROSS. Can you believe how much money they are charging for these burners? What a waste. Although they do have to recover some of the costs, but they are pricing themselves out of the market.
Hold out till the price comes down. You don't need 45gigs toss away storage... which is what these are, really. Just get external hard drives and keep swapping, or use Nero Ultimate Enhanced for the DVD set options and encrypted backups. What a great product that is! ZOMG
It's a bad idea to rush into selling something that isn't ready. There is no PLAYER! Although this is a real juicy project for an OSS lover............:-)
I think it would be tragic to have a single official set of benchmarks, because the standard would be subject to political manipulation... because political manipulation is so much worse than businesses who do the same thing to push more boxes! haha No. Shady is shady, and regulation will not stop companies from being shady. Consumers have that power, if they can see it.
"So because the majority of computer buyers and users don't know what they're buying, then people go with the "bigger number = better computer" theory. And why shouldn't they?"
That is exactly what they believe to be true, more frequently than not. I completely agree that there should be a form of standardization between retail computers to help customers protect themselves, but the computer industry is self-regulating and there is no way to leverage them into being more forthcoming, unless there was a profit motivator for that and we all know that's not the case.
Then again, in the same product line, GHz (and perhaps cache amount) is often the only thing that can decide how fast a chip is compared to another.
You are using the GHz info as correctly as possible. There are other mitigating factors that are too ubiquitous for most to comprehend but at the end of the day, you probably won't notice them playing WOW.
In many cases, the true difference is here and here: to confirm, I'm not talking about the overall rates of stock trading, but more so the graph as Google displays what the stocks are doing. Typically the more profitable a company is, the better their product offerings are overall. It's at least a good factor to consider, IMHO.
The common misconception that you should measure a CPU's power using GHz of a processor is one we really need to put to rest forever. That is a bad choice of deciding factor for going with a particular processor, or not. Differences between chips will always be totally immeasurable, so only fools go by chip ratings, IMHO. Customers should read as much as they can and look at final performances and make a decision of whether to buy or not buy.
I would place a much higher reliability factor upon balancing the chip manufacturer's position in the market, their support and services, their overall reputation, their evil factor, and the overall performance of computers that rely on the chip.
A customer should decide on what is really important to them and it should really involve a lot more than which horse looks faster. Sometimes even the slowest damn horse wins the race because of Murphy's Law, which we all know applies to computers.
I had a chance to skim through the MySQL cookbook a week or so ago and will more than probably pick one up, though I think I need another shelf for my web development/linux books.:-)
I'd recommend trying their online library, which most certainly contains this book as well as about 10000 others on a wide variety of subjects, ATM. I used Safari last month and it was really amazing!! I plan on renewing my subscription when I have more reading time...
There is absolutely no need for anyone like this to do interviews unless they have some sort of self-congratulatory outlook on greyhat coding. Any number of onlookers, including slashdotters could tell exactly what was meant by certain actions or features in any project. The only people doing interviews are looking for attention and that's not the point, IMHO.
Nah, he'll have some stupid line of code that identifies him. Or they'll reveal something that connects it to him.
By anonymous, I mean without connection or identity, not pretending to be someone else. They get subversives every time by their need to maintain their self identity in some form, be it though personal expression or some other random link that forensics easily trails back like a string right to the perps (which is what you are if you're doing anything creative these days with computers).
There are laws, legal interpretations and then there is reality; the courts will connect this program to its most wide use, not its intended use.
Why do we keep using the same methods of our oppressors against ourselves? For CREDIT??? For PERSONAL GAIN???
A note to any future coders of freedom; write it anonymously and just release it into the wild. Do not claim the rights over it for your benefit because that is exactly how they keep shutting you down. They can't fight a ghost!;-)
Everyone who wants a properly working Internet connection, moron.
Properly working? Nice command of the english language! You MEANT to say, "Everyone who wants the Internet to work, moron."
Did you buy that UID on ebay?
Yes, and it was worth every penny, and while I'm at it, I think it's pretty silly for someone who doesn't even HAVE a UID to complain about someone who PAID to get one because he thought it would be cool to own a piece of internet history -- a Slashdot beta account. Furthermore, I have posted green-lit articles that make sense, I have Excellent Karma (generally) and I contribute positively to this community. You won't even identify yourself; is that because of your UID envy, your terrible Karma or your affiliation to Slashdot?
My confusion is their confusion. The Slashdot editor should have green-lit a post that was written intelligibly, as opposed to the confusing post that was released into the wild. Networking was never my strong-suit, so I was pretty weirded out by the way they presented this article, because I could not see the relevance.
Here is a brief rewrite for your consideration:
paulbiz writes, "Charter Cable's DNS servers are now resolving all invalid hostnames and pointing them to a Charter-branded error page. This new approach will cause major issues for any Charter customer using FTP or ping (for example). If a Charter user types in an FTP host incorrectly, for example, the user will falsely believe their domain is down due for some undisclosed reason, because Charter will not be choking the attempt but sending them CONNECTION REFUSED errors instead. Confusion ensues!"
Alas I am not sure why I even am green-lighting this article, but since it's a slow news day, and since the article was so well-written I must release it into the wild. Plus it gives us a chance to get some Karma from OpenDNS, where you can actually opt out of the custom error page.
I am unsure if this is a slow news day or if this is sensationalist because of some strange happening, and I'm pretty sure I can connect even seemingly disparate bits of information, so my only follow-up question is -- who the fuck cares?

Only on Slashdot....
You think that's funny, but I am waiting for the flood of "he bought it on Ebay" posts.

Doesn't Cisco face a possible lawsuit also in Canada over the name?
I bet this results in some interesting watermark lawsuits in the next little while.
You are absolutely right, but 20% of the market is a big chunk of change to pass up.
