Obviously totally made up, but they take it anyway. Places offering free services online do not need my home address, so when they require it, I just feed them something like that.

It helps, too, that I have a proxy set up to deny everything from *.doubleclick.net and every other ad-banner URL I could find. Sometimes I take it off when surfing /., but other than that, I almost never see banner ads, just these mysterious banner-ad sized blank spots...

Having said that, I can see where you're coming from... but you need to lay off. Would you like to know why they don't get any black/married/gay/man-hating-Lesbian-Avenger-asian -goth-perl-coders? Because they don't apply for the position.

Seriously. I've heard of companies who will hire the underqualified black man over the white man who's perfect for the job, just so they can be politically correct. You don't hear about it often, but it does happen. I found a quote once that nicely sums up how I feel about this. "Sometimes it's important to offend people."

Before you go around spouting the p-word (propaganda), think seriously about the issue at hand. Think about target audiences. You may as well ask why doesn't Playboy have articles geared towards lesbians, or why doesn't PC Gamer have articles on the latest console systems. Sure they may be of interest to some of the readers -- but it's not the target audience.

If you did, you'd realize that this project has little to nothing to do with specifically running Micros~1 products on your box. It's about running Win32 apps on linux. Now, if I cared to, I could come up with a long list of Windows programs that have nothing to do with MS.

I don't know what's worse -- when MS tries to make themselves look pretty by spreading their usual lies, or when linux users spout anti-MS statements that are just as unfounded.

Anywho, I should clear something up. You're right -- with scripting and HTML features in mail readers, you can get a virus or at least some troublesome annoyances just from reading email.

With the AOL mail reader, however, you can't. They barely even support HTML, in fact. The only possible way an AOL user could get a virus through their AOL email account is if they downloaded and ran an attachment.

You cannot get a virus simply by reading email. It's a saying that's been repeated to newbies since who-knows-when, and I'm surprised that /. missed it.

It even says in the article, and I quote:

If the user opens the attached file -- an action AOL claims to repeatedly warn users against -- it launches a small program that obtains the user's password off the hard disk and sends it back to the hacker's OperaMail address.

AOL does repeatedly warn it's users about opening attachments from people you don't know... doesn't mean that people always heed these warnings.

Okay, I know others have posted this too, but I just had to add my $2.0*10^-2

I found out about this layout from a friend, and about how great it was supposed to be. Did a little research, found that I could change a simple setting and rearrange my keycaps, and I'd be using Dvorak.

It was horrible at first. I had to relearn how to type, and since I spend a lot of time in chats, it was really frustrating. Didn't help that I had to use QWERTY in school, too.

I struggled through it, though, and after a month or two, I swear I was typing faster with Dvorak than I ever did with QWERTY, and it was a lot nicer on my hands as well. As an unpleasant side-effect, my QWERTY skills were nearly reduced to hunt-and-peck, but since I did/do most of my typing at home, it wasn't much of an issue.

A little while ago, though, I bought a new computer, and new keyboard to go with it. (The old keyboard's plug wouldn't fit in the new comp's jack, and it didn't have a Windoze key).

I've relearned how to type in QWERTY, at least as well as I ever did, a sort of cross between the standard method and hunt-and-peck. I'd switch back, but other family members use the computer, too, now that it's not a piece of junk, and I don't want to screw them up.

This is practically the same thing... "forced" to spend thousands of dollars, my arse.
