it looks like they claimed 170 Mb/s, ie. megabits per second, whereas you are comparing to 100 MB/s, ie megabytes per second.

  2. when they are interested on When Should Children Be Introduced to Computers? · · Score: 3, Insightful

my daughter is 7 now, and since she was 6, and even a little when she was 5, she has been interested in my computer. i have bought a learning-english program for her (i live in germany with a german girlfriend), and allow her to play it in small doses, ie. about 1 hour at a time, max. she doesn't notice herself when she gets grumpy from too much time in front of the computer, so it has to be supervised. i also allow her to have fun on certain fixed websites, from time to time, but less so. she loves all this, and i don't detect any problems with respect to setting priorities in life, or dealing with other people. the key point is moderation, and supervision. the computer is not a babysitter, but i believe that kids who are comfortable with computers will have less problems later on. she also likes the paint program, but just for 30 minutes at a time. finally, we also do some two-with-computer work, with me doing 3d modeling and her making the calls, and occasionally helping out, so she can get a glimpse at the larger picture.

  3. do you have access to a hotplate? on Which Instant Coffee? · · Score: 1

if you have access to a hotplate, i recommend getting a bialetti moka maker. my personal favorite is the brikka 2-cupper, which gives a little crema. there is a little star on the inside of the bottom part. fill it to the bottom of the star to get one large espresso serving. middle of the star gets you two normal servings and top of the star gets you two large espresso servings. i like illy coffe myself, the red variety being my absolute favorite. here is a webpage i wrote about all this. boiling a little milk to get your macchiato is a simple matter, given the hotplate. even if you don't have one at work, a cheap one would probably fit on your desk and do the trick.

  4. it depends what you were after... on 'Matrix Revolutions' Opens Today · · Score: 1

i just came back from the 20:30 imax showing in berlin. apart from the fact that i was in row k (for those who don't know this theatre, row k equates to "too damn close"), i had a good time and liked the movie.

now i have to admit that before even the second movie came out, i had set aside all prejudice and decided that topping the first movie would be an impossible proposition, especially given the epic speech at the end. if the second (or the third) movie had followed the recipe, it would have been dreadfully boring.

and i have to admit that i was watching with ulteriour motives. i work for mental images, and work on mental ray, the renderer used for the majority of the special effects in the movie, and i was just damn excited to see what esc and buf (and some other talented companies) had done with our software. so in a sense, those guys could do no wrong, as long as it looked good.

and it looked damn good. apart from a couple of scenes near the middle which were so wishy-washy and obviously done with pixar's prman (around the time of the swarms of the sentinels which knocked over the crane), but hey, the rest was sharp and beautiful, and very mental ray (hey, that rhymes!).

but seriously, the plot was thin on the ground, and the holes were large, and the unanswered questions many, and the philosophy was nearly totally absent. i don't know if anyone else out there likes writing, but i think at some point i might have some fun trying to write some short stories which tie up the loose stuff better than the movies did.

but the action was fun, fast and furious. and it was a gorgeous sight. as they say, two out of three ain't bad. they were sequels after all. and i will wait for the director's cut dvd box set, with all the extra material, and then i will watch it again and again for all those little clues that i can never see the first (or the second) time around.

it just depends what you were after...

  5. Tombow is the best pen, imho on When Word Processors Are Out: What's The Best Pen? · · Score: 1

i haven't seen this brand mentioned here, but my favorites are the Tombow pens. i have a rollerball, with a 03P X-FINE cartridge. i write a lot, mostly in my little moleskine notebook, and i have not found anything which writes nicer, with smooth quality ink, no blobs, little resistance, and just overall loveliness. try it out in a bookstore somewhere. there are all different sizes and shapes, thick and thin, but the writing feel i have not found the equal of yet.

i have lost track by now, but last time i was vaguely aware, i think they had bought between 2000 and 3000 mental ray licenses from us. they are using mostly dual-cpu boxes, if i recall correctly. i am sure there will be a followup article on the technology at some point, straightening out these points and more. which o/s, which hardware, what rendering software (okay, mental ray), and so on. one thing is sure: they've got a big, hot room full of machinery somewhere.
