For example, plumbers are often paid more than people with degrees - there were even stories a few years ago of people dropping out from Computer Science courses at prestigious universities like Cambridge and Oxford to work as plumbers and car mechanics.

When your plumber gets woken up at 3am to fix something, at least he gets to charge extra.

How is this different from Mexican immigrants in the US?

Well, the Mexicans are largely illegal (11M estimated), so there's that. Also, they aren't immigrants, because they're subject to deportation if we ever grow a pair. Immigrants by definition have some measure of security - otherwise, they're refugees or something.

in fact, almost every US citizens is descended from immigrants!

No we aren't. some of us are descended from conquerors.

The BLS makes a "best effort", but they only sample 60000 households which is not such a great sample since in each market that's only a few hundred out of 100's of thousands. This is where the fudging happens.

a few hundred, provided you don't have much selection bias, is quite enough to get numbers that are 'good enough' for this discussion.

You can argue that they're more feature rich, but that's really not relevant to me - PDFs provide what I want without compatibility issues, so anything that needs to be kept around for a long time is a PDF.

We came across one spreadsheet it butchered to hell when it opened. It opened all the rest just fine but that one. In a business environment 99.9999% compatible isn't good enough. If a program can't open one file then there is no reason to switch.

I'd dispute that. If it can't open one file, then it's a trade between the cost of the switch and any headaches involved (your spreadsheet) vs. the cost of staying with MS office. Were you able to clean the spreadsheet and submit it to someone on the project for analysis *assuming the formulas aren't trade secrets or something)?

No I'm not. Driving a wrx at 85 on the highway is perfectly safe unless conditions are bad. Doing the same in a uhaul truck is suicide. Insurance premiums are based on expected behavior of a demographic, and WRXs attract far riskier behavior than 85 on the highway. The point here is that the WRX is far better suited to higher speeds than the average car - that's what it's for - so speed limits would be higher for it if they in fact considered the car you drive.
