I think that one of the areas that linux can really beat windows given enough effort is with it's desktop environments.

Given this, wouldn't it be better for people migrating from windows to become acustomed to the more powerful desktop environment of linux, rather than one which sacrifices some good features for the sake of making windows users feel more at home?

Also, if you shroud the differences between windows and linux behind a look-alike gui as soon as something goes wrong, or the user trys to install something the os will likely throw up a very un-windows like error, which will most likely confuse the user, leaving a sour taste about linux in their mouth.

    Package Selection.

Make it easy, with options like in some of the linux installers (Anaconda, whatever slackware uses). Have a 'install all', 'install sets', 'expert (select individual packages)'. Divide everything up into logical sets, and make sure that you have to install required components (and I don't mean IE or Windows Media Player). Perhaps have an 'Express Install' option that will install all the basic sets. You should also have the ability to add/remove sets or packages after the install.

I vaguely remember another poster saying awhile ago that ISPs only have to pay for data injected _into_ other networks.
Therefore they don't have to pay data charges for your downloads - only for your uploads. If this is true then it makes sense that ISPs limit upstream traffic, as it's costing them more.

Actually, I'd kill for a dsl connection like my sibling poster has. Here in NZ if I want to get full DSL with a 10gig data cap I need to pay $1500 a month, so I'm stuck with 128/128k sdsl :(.
