  1. It's about the hardware, stupid! on Bunk Camp - Apple Gets It Wrong? · · Score: 1
A perfect analysis (and rebuttal) of this kind of articles is given by the ever insightfull Daring Fireball:
The reason this [boot OS X on any Intel-powered PC] isn't going to happen -- at least not soon -- is that it doesn't fit with Apple's aforementioned business, selling computer hardware. Boot Camp fits because it makes it more likely that more people will buy Mac hardware, and doesn't make it any more likely that existing Mac users will switch to buying computers from some other company.

As for many of the animations, fades, slides, etc in the widgets themselves., they simply look so damn cool because of Safari's rich support for CSS3 used in conjunction with DHTML.
Todd Dominey of What Do I Know asks himself wether the technology used in these Dashboard widgets is actually similar to MS ActiveX, but that horrible question gets answered by Hyatt as well... in a positive way.

Plus, it was a previous 'minor enhancement' that changed the licensing terms of already-purchased music via the iTMS (to the significant apprehension of many people).

It might be interesting to note that the changes in the licensing terms are only for the newly bought songs in 4.5, i.e. for the songs you already purchased before upgrading to 4.5, the old terms still apply.

That aside, nothing changes in the licensing terms from iTunes 4.5 to 4.6.

This puts the entire discussion a bit into perspective, doesn't it? As a side note, wasn't this switcher a Windows-first interface addition? Then, shouldn't credit be given to Microsoft (yesss, my spine shivers as much as yours at this thought). Anyway.

I'd like to have seen a "Repeat album" feature.

You can rather quickly filter out all the songs in a certain album, either by the fast "Search" field up-right, or by browsing the albums using the "Browse" button.

Once you have these songs, just select "Repeat". OK, it's not "One-click", but an acceptable "No-more-than-three-click".

Well, actually you are referring to the iTMS voor Belgie, because it's a Dutch/Flemish inspired typo. And your humour: not dry enough for me, but it's not irritating.

iTunes 5 to accompany Apple music announcements Thursday?

Several rumor sites have suggested this to be so. We have recently seen test builds of iTunes 5, and it does indeed appear to include WMA audio support -- even with the Mac version. The Windows version still has some outstanding bugs -- not something one would expect only days from release, although the build in question was compiled roughly one week ago -- including sometimes completing MP3 CD burns without giving an error even though the disc in question is damaged and will not play.

There are some features listed in the build notes (self-expiring song downloads to enable free promotional downloads of whole tracks, for one) that are not testable without the corresponding changes being enabled on the server end, and it appeared that under Jaguar there were some problems with the new look-and-feel.

The big question in the minds of the grapevine appears to be this: will iTunes 5 ship as part of the final Panther package, or will Panther users have to upgrade from iTunes 4 via Software Update, even though version 5 was available before Panther's release? There are not yet clear answers, but we suspect this issue will be addressed as part of Thursday's announcements...which are also rumored to include new iPod accessories and possibly even modest modifications (lower entry-level price, possible new high-end model) to the current lineup itself.

I make two first-hand notes about SMS spam:

    1. I live in Europe, have had an SMS-capable cell phone for two years, and have never received a single piece of SMS spam. I credit this with never having given to any logo/ringtone website my phone number, and let me tell you, I much prefer not getting spam to having a nice ringtone.

    2. I have never understood the US SMS pricing scheme; the idea that one would have to pay for messages received completely baffles me, and I think it threatens to be the single largest reason that SMS spam will have such a profound effect on US consumers.

I largely agree. I have a GSM cell phone with the same number from 1996 on, and I have never recieved a real spam message. I also think this is due to the fact that here in Belgium (and most other European countries) you just pay for sending an sms message, nothing whatsoever for recieving one.

When I take my cell phone abroad (the operator changes automatically due to the roaming option), once in a while I do get a message from the foreign operator itself, advertising this or that feature (e.g. how one could easily listen to ones voice mail). But you only get that once.

Well, my first generation 5 GB iPod still works fine, after one year and a half. No complaints whatsoever. I use my iPod while cycling, walking, sitting on the bus. I've put them in a Xtrememac case (the 5 Gig model does not come with a case, the others do). The most extreme situations my iPod has been through (besides of residing in my pants-pocket while cycling), is falling of the table sometimes. It needs the case, I suppose, but it came out just fine. So if you ask about the durability, I think you're quite safe with an iPod.

From the Crazy Apple Rumors Site, another press release:
Apple Computers is pleased to announce the acquisition of a tuna fish sandwich on wheat toast with lettuce and mayonnaise.

CEO Steve Jobs said "Apple has a long history of eating sandwiches, and this one will be no exception. I won't be eating it personally, since I don't eat fish or mayonnaise, but this sandwich will help us better achieve increased market share by providing much-needed nourishment."

Apple ignited the personal computer revolution in the 1970s with the Apple II and reinvented the personal computer in the 1980s with the Macintosh. Apple is committed to bringing the best personal computing experience to its customers through its innovative hardware, software and Internet offerings.

The tuna fish sandwich is a tasty lunch treat enjoyed by people the world over.

Reaction to Apple's sandwich acquisition was mixed.

Marcus Gregory, Chief Investment Strategist for the State of California Teacher's Pension Plan, said "Our holding in Apple is predicated on the company's large cash reserves. I would hate to see those reserves frittered away on sandwich acquisitions.

"Now, granted, at the $5.75 purchase price of the tuna fish sandwich, Apple would need to acquire... five plus... carry the... well, a whole hell of a lot of sandwiches to make a dent in $5 billion, but it's the principle of thing."

The following quote comes from MacOS Rumors, but it certainly isn't the only story reporting on the coming Apple tablet. A Google search for "Apple tablet" yields a fountain of rather unfounded but interesting tales.
Another hot rumor on the Web today is that Apple has contracted with its primary iMac manufacturer, Quanta Computers, to produce a wireless flat-panel display unit that would serve as Apple's answer to the tablet computing market.

We have heard similar rumors, but serious technical concerns about either of the two major scenarios this would entail make it difficult for us to build a reasonable picture of what such a machine might be like. The first scenario sources have typically outlined is a pen-input display with its brains housed in a fixed desktop unit with only display data transmitted over a wireless connection. The second is a self-contained unit with only the keyboard, mouse, and other desktop niceties connected wirelessly. In either case, there are serious questions about balance of functionality with the technical concerns of what wireless technologies would be used, and whether their bandwidths and latencies would be sufficient to make the whole package live up to Apple's standards.

It is a pity all the previous work was undone, for the first iCommune really was a nifty utility. Steve Jobs made us thirsty, by the way, when he demonstrated the music-sharing abilities of iTunes together with Rendezvous and AirPort a while ago. He shouldn't introduce such a feature without releasing it in the near future, while at the same time squashing all initiatives (like iCommune) that try to cope with what is certainly very cool. Let's hope the new iCommune will work, and is here to stay (until, of course, Apple comes out with something mindbogglingly more funky).
