The club I used to go to in London had a 'no photos / filming' policy to protect it's customers. People were allowed to take their phones in, of course, but they just weren't allowed to use them to take photos and film. The club was for alternative culture people, and the policy was so they could dress the way they liked without worrying about photos of them getting about town.
I'm in Australia, so Netflix, Hulu and most that other stuff won't even work without proxying and other trickey. My net connection during peak hours is now massively oversubscribed so any streaming service is worthless until I get backhaul relief. OTOH I have 4TB of movies and tv shows in a range of formats, mostly MP4 but some MKV and I can't watch any of those without leaving on my expensive power hungry main machine with iTunes open. Streaming radio I can get through my amp, so I'm not concerned about that.
The AppleTV could be a really cool little device, everything is in place except for the parts Apple deliberately didn't give us, mostly I think to protect copyright holders.
If it's like Apple TV it will require you to own a PC or Mac and have that turned on and running iTunes in order to play anything. Sure, it can connect to an Itunes Server, but you don't get any of the UI experience, in fact, it's measurably worse than DLNA. At least DLNA can play my MKV files.
I was expecting HURD to come out at the same time as Duke Nukem Forever and the four horsemen of the apocalypse. Who would have thought Duke Nukem would be the first one out the gate from those three!
HURD will be too little, too late. Hell, it would have been too little too late a decade ago, now it's just a joke.
And that paint would come in a really fancy tin with incredible packaging, but still come out of the same factory as the generic brand stuff at 1/4 the price.
Toggle switches, bitches! Anything else is modern and not to be trusted. Ever see a computer programmed with toggle switches become self aware and take over the world...no, and you never will!
You're forgetting the complexity of learning each language and how repetition aids retention. Languages like LUA and Go have as few as 25 keywords and can be learnt in an afternoon. Try and do that with Japanese.
Languages take time and effort to learn. Try to remember, C++, although complex by the standards of most computer languages is ridiculously easy compared to learning French. If the programmers spent a proportional amount of time on the foreign language, I think they would have the same level of mastery.
I'm similar. While I can read French to a reasonable degree my ability to understand it while listening is poor, and my ability to speak it is laughable. OTOH I can read pretty much any computer language and am fluent in...um...a lot...I can't really recall.
Even if you can't win, the goal is always to do so much damage to them they they don't want to come after you. If you stand there, let them push you around, then cry like a little girl afterwards they are coming back for more. If you show no fear, attack first, attack hard, they won't come back, even if you take a few hard punches that day...they're going to go after something easier next time.
If you're fighting multiple opponents, 9 times out of 10, most of them will be standing out of harms way while just one or two engage. In the rare case a few are willing to fight - position yourself so the alpha male is between you and the other opponent(s) who are trying to engage. Keep on your feet and move around using him as a shield.
If you don't know how to fight, join a local gym with martial arts classes and start training. No one else is going to do this for you.
I have the opposite experience. I moved schools a fair bit when young and each time there was a new set of bullies to deal with. Bullies usually come with at least one sidekick, and usually a few. I faced down packs of as many as ten at some times, but usually it was a trio.
Simply throwing a few punches back isn't enough. You need to knock them to the ground, stand over them and humiliate them in front of 'their' peers. The bullies need to know that they can't win against you, that's the real key to making them stop.
The first step is to identify the alpha male. Don't wait for him to dominate you and push you around, ramping up to the obviously incoming violence. Straight out the gate, once it's obvious the person is a bully smack them fair in the face and don't stop till they are down. A few direct punches to the nose will stop most anyone in their tracks. Do the same to anyone on his side who is stupid enough to step in, they almost never will - none of them want to risk taking a beating. Don't play the game of push, shove and tossing insults while they build up their courage, jump straight in and go as hard as you can.
Most bullies only ever tried it on once. They knew well enough to steer clear of me after that and go after the easy prey.
I was sent to the office a few times, and I guess times were a bit different back when I was younger (also, I don't live in the litigious USA), but most trips to the office were a 'he said, she said' affair, followed by at worst a bit of essay writing or detention.
Thank goodness then there's an unlimited amount of both air and water on this planet and that it's not being constantly polluted or ruthlessly exploited.
So your argument is that if we had infinite space, infinite energy, could transmit energy / information instantly (fuck relativity and the speed of light) anywhere in the universe...then we would have no resource issue?
There will always be people who use their infinite energy to subjugate others and take away their space, energy and time.
There is no limit to human greed so there will always be scarcity. For some, it will be simply because their desires outstretch their ability to consume, and for others, because the desires of the 1% enforce poverty on the other 99%.
I do watch Rage from time to time, generally the Friday night edition since that's when the new musicians are given a chance. Unearthed would be about the only time I'd be interested in Triple J, but that's mostly because I find radio friendly pop / rock to be like nails down a chalkboard.
While Triple J is not as mainstream as Triple M / etc (so awful!) it is still a pretty mainstream radio station. You just have to see what songs get into the hottest 100 every year. I recall listening to it a bit before leaving for the UK in 1999, and when I got back I bought a car and tuned the radio to JJJ to see what they were playing. It was still Powderfinger, Regurgitator, and the like - new songs, to be sure, but a lot of the same old bands.
Sure, Triple J often gets the music a year ahead of the more commercial radio stations, and they do push lesser known artists - but it's still too commercial for my tastes (in general). I like watching Rage because I can just record 10 hours at a time, fast forward the crap - and save the good stuff for viewing later.
That's only true if you're still using the same software. Software very rarely ever gets faster. The software to display the web based media rich mail we are used to receiving now is doing a lot more work than the old text based stuff. Gmail is also doing things in the background to keep you notified of events.
I do agree though, it shouldn't be a heavy application by a long shot. Most of the hard work should already be pre-built into the browser for general work and running a mail UI shouldn't require a machine 10x more powerful than it did in 1999.
As for not imaging bugs, well, I use gmail every day and have done for over a decade now (IIRC). I've found it to be a damn fine client and not actually run into any bugs personally. It's software, so it's bound to have some, but I'd expect that one bad enough to lay the smack down so badly on your PC would perhaps be noticed by the 10s of millions of other users and fixed.
Have you tried a bunch of different browsers to see how well it works in those? I use Chrome personally, so YMMV if you use IE / Opera / Firefox / etc.
Because a general purpose language is a bit like using a sledgehammer to open a walnut. You can do it, but there's better options.
Python / Javascript / LUA and other script languages don't have the performance needed and are needlessly more complicated than requirements.
The developers can create their own mini language which is fit for purpose and can be expressed in 10s - 100s of lines of EBNF. That can be fed into standard tools and a bunch of c++ code pops out the other end which can be used to compile or interpret as required.
Custom mini-languages are smaller, faster, simple to learn and fit for purpose. Can you imagine the world if Cisco used C# and.Net on all their equipment...

For Programming:
Sublime 3
For lols you could prank the glass wearer by tapping their glasses and saying stuff like:
"Ok, glass, goatse lemonparty tubgirl"
You could claim you were a member of Pussy Riot.

Cover it with a good thick layer of whale oil...say Minke or Blue Whale, still got plenty of those left!
Why not fire up your own private WoW server and play on your own or with a few mates? Most of the solo stuff works pretty well on them.

Oh, Krieger san! (Archer)
It worked for me, and not just once.
It's called fight or flight for a reason.

Triple J went mainstream a few decades ago. It's still mass marketed over hyped pop crap, but just more oriented at the 30 somethings.
