i feel pretty certain that many Slashdotters are in favour of protection against false advertising and slanderous speech. The current SCO line on Linux is definitely in one of these two camps.
Through the magic of this new "real number" system just now being developed we are able to now handle such tricky numbers as 28.4 and 17.1234. It's cutting edge and not everyone can "get" it, but I have real hope fractional numbers will take off in the future.
Not the old ones that you had to press a button to make a red readout light up so that you could tell the time. They were neither simpler, cheaper or able to set an alarm. IIRC it is one of those sort that is shown in the TV series (though it's been a while).
Can you seriously imagine anyone else playing the role of the giant in Princess Bride? Knowing Americans they would have cast Tom Cruise because he has "box office bankability"...
The fact you can build one is not at issue, I can build a vehicle but that doesn't make it legal to drive on the road.
The point is they don't want to be seen as releasing a product that can be used inappropriately straight out of the tin i.e. without some form of modification having to be done. This is similar to DVD player manufacturers who have to make their players abide by region restrictions (to apease the film industry) but who almost always put in some easy bypass for this to appease the end users. They have to show due dilligence.
IIRC one of the prime reasons Intel won't release open source drivers is because the hardware chipset is capable of broadcasting on frequencies that are reserved for police/fire/etc and at higher output levels than is presently legal. Open source drivers would ease the path to hacking and utilising these hardware features.
And then you can vote with your wallet and show these companies that you care about having open source drivers. It's really simple; if they supply open source drivers then consider buying their hardware, otherwise, don't.
The people who don't care can do what they like at purchase time and they should have the ability to get their closed source drivers so they can use Linux too. It's all a stepping stone to going completely open source. That's not to say closed source should ship with the kernel, because it shouldn't - that position is reserved for open source only.
What sort of "insistance" are you practising here when you are openly admitting that you use one of the prime offenders in the binary driver category? I'd say it's more like you "prefer" open source drivers but will take whatever you can get. That puts you squarely in the same boat with the others who don' really care if the driver is open or not, as long as it exists and they can use their hardware.
If both are compiled with the same compiler options then a simple CRC check should confirm they are identical. That's why all the binary downloads tend to have their signatures supplied as well.
This still leaves the open source community with the ability to safely create their own set of libraries since the actual core language itself is submitted. Even if MS took away the right to use their XML libraries we would be able to write own own new ones.
ECMA and other standards bodies won't normally allow patents to be enforced on any standard they endorse. To quote Futurama "You've watched it, you can't unwatch it". Since MS have submitted their code to ECMA as a standard they won't be able to enforce the relevant patents.
Windows XP delivered on their promise of a faster startup alright...right up until the time I installed all my other software, then it was back to being as slow as Linux and Windows 2000. Gates delivered all right, but only if you are purely using the tools provided by the OS i.e. winword.exe for word processing (hahaah), notepad for editing, etc.
Perhaps you need to re-evaluate what your criteria is for friendship. These people sound like associates to me, not friends, and I don't do computer aid for associates.
Try asking them what you will be having for dinner when you come over to fix their PC. Then it's clear they need to provide you with some food, and you've got some bargaining power e.g. they say KFC and you say you'll be there next month to help, they say Thai and you're there tonight with a sixpack:->

Freedom of speech is a US thing, not a German thing.
I'm guessing it was a penny!

They're not trying to understand other cultures, but rather understand how best to attack and kill other cultures.

With the one where he had a leading role and you could see him act...not the walk on in a fuzzy beer suit role.

Since you can *always* download the code from the Apache group's servers why would you ever need to trust this ACME company?

Run a DoS against www.sco.com...go on, you know you want to.
Stop posting to slashdot under assumed names Mr Gates.

I hope all you email buddies are on AOL and Hotmail then, since you won't be receiving much mail otherwise.
