  1. Re:RTFA !! on DRM Advocate Violates DRM · · Score: 1

The Slashdot article implied that he was caught reversing his position, which is false. He was frustrated by a bad implementation of DRM and called attention to the fact that such a bad implementation will cause even a proponent of DRM to violate it out of frustration.

Whether there is any such thing as a "good" implementation of DRM is a different, although closely related, subject.

Personally, I do believe there can be such a beast. We just haven't seen it yet.

  2. RTFA !! on DRM Advocate Violates DRM · · Score: 1

QUOTE: "Good case study for firms on HOW NOT TO IMPLEMENT DRM solutions."

His complaint was with Microsoft's brain-dead implementation of DRM. His opinion that DRM is a requirement for future business remains unchanged.

  3. Attractive Nuisance on Man Arrested for Using Open Wireless Network · · Score: 5, Interesting

This seems to be similar to "attractive nuisance" violations: If a homeowner sets up a trampoline in his front yard he must also put a fence around it. Otherwise, he cannot complain about trespassers when all the neighborhood kids start jumping on it. Furthermore, without the fence the homeowner can (and has been successfully) be sued for negligence when one of those kids breaks his neck.

Plus the fact that the American founding fathers would themselves be considered terrorists or insurgents. Remember the Minutemen firing from the hedges at the Redcoats marching in formation? Guerilla warfare (terrorism) is simply how a grassroots uprising fights an overwhelming entrenched occupational force.

  6. iPod - DRM - RealID - Totalitarian Overlords on Yahoo Introduces Competitor for iTunes · · Score: 1

Yahoo should tie their DRM to my new RealID national ID card so that I could play their music on any device, any time, any where. Then I, for one, would welcome my new totalitarian overlords with my shiny new iPod.

  7. Facts All Come With Points Of View on Google Delivering Factual Answers · · Score: 2, Interesting

I am reminded of the Talking Heads lyric, "Facts all come with points of view." I'm not sure Google really wants to be in the business of determining what the facts are.

  8. Re:Who cares? on Adobe Acrobat Toolbar Worse than Malware? · · Score: 1

Yes, bogie, there are slow news days. Would you prefer to post nothing?

A blog site that must publish 20 stories a day is a voracious beast. Sometimes it's caviar, sometimes it's yesterday's trash.

  9. Re:Blue skies on Round the World Flight Set for Monday · · Score: 2, Insightful

During launch the plane is so loaded with fuel that it can barely liftoff. Yes, they do need good weather for this. Once airborne they//// he can fly over most weather and (hopefully) avoid the rest.

  10. Re:Mac Tivo? on Apple to Buy TiVo? · · Score: 1

I know this was meant as a joke, but when will remote control designers figure out that fewer buttons are better than more? Especially when the remote is controlling a menu-driven interface like TiVo. I want a remote control with a D-pad and maybe four other buttons. Not 24. And make it obvious (in the dark) which end is which.

  11. Re:I wouldn't say cracked on Napster Has Been Cracked · · Score: 1

What is "woohoooo" is that Napster is allowing a 14 day free-for-all download. One can grab as much content as fast as he can, cancel the Napster subscription before the trial period expires, then wait for a decrypter to show up later. Meanwhile, slightly degraded audio is better than nothing.

Napster 2.0's business model seems about as robust as Napster 1.0. Although I can't imagine Napster losing any sleep over this.

  12. Re:Or in other words, on Dan Gillmor on His Move to "Citizen Journalism" · · Score: 1

I don't think so. The quality of the Mercury News has dropped off sharply since the acquisition by Knight Ridder. There was a massive rush for the exit by most of the top talent three years ago. Dan is simply the last of the old guard to stick around, and I'm sure it was his choice to leave.

The Mercury News is a faint shadow of its former self and seems to be unwilling to even try to retain top talent.
