    I was looking at webcams, but they are all USB, meaning they can't be hooked up through a cable longer than 5 feet. Firewire would allow 35 feet, but that would mean FINDING a firewire webcam.

    Check out OrangeMicro's iBot for a firewire cam, they're the only ones I've found that use a firewire interface.

    Talk about superior OS stuff, I'm all ears, but "MHZ Myth" "MHZ Myth" just gets stupider every time you say it.

    I'll bite.. My Mac Color Classic from 1993 is bone stock from when I bought it. How does your 386 compare? Does it use the same hard drive? The same monitor? The same NIC?

    Is your SOFTWARE still useful?

    Mine is.

    Hello, hello? ...echo... The Mac will be the *first* consumer 64-bit OS, and when Linux and Windows finally catch up, they will grab all the headlines.

    Plugs in a Mac PCI Radeon video card, son of a... It works!

    Tries a Belkin USB hub, holy moly, that works too!

    But wait, my PS/2 mouse won't work! Or my parallel printer! Or my ADB tablet!

    Time to move forward, eh?

    Example?

    Not-quite-Unix

    BeOS had a powerful command line and Unix-like underpinnings that could compile and run POSIX compliant software. Every Unix-like operating system has failed in the marketplace except Linux (which is free, and for all intents and purposes it is Unix). The Amiga Operating System was developed with similar goals in mind, and that particular operating system withered and died as well. Being able to compile POSIX compliant software is not a marketable advantage (even Windows NT can do it).

    It's an interesting article, and I think it sums up why BeOS really failed. I truely liked BeOS, but not for my main desktop.

    Everyone's experienced a hard disk that works just fine but has a piercing, tinitus-inducing whine, which usually gets worse over time.

    Acutally, no, I haven't experienced that, but I've been using Mac's since 2001.

    I do like watching planes take off though. When I miss the x86 market, a few minutes a Newark always remind me.

    Hello! His problem was "told by a friend in the know that my issue was more of a mac gui thing." How does that deal with Unix? That's why the admin guide was suggested.

    There's "Unix for Dummies" if he needs Unix help.

    Have you tried downloading the admin guide from Apple?

    It's 622 pages worth of pretty useful information, like setup, maintenance, and troubleshooting.

    $500 for 5GB?

    If you check Apple's web site, you'll see that 5GB iPod's start at US $299.

    Some might think 300 bucks is expensive for an MP3 player, but my iPod also doubles as an external hard drive for data backup.

    I bring mine to work, where I can connect it to my G4 and play songs through iTunes. If I have some work to bring home, why email it or burn a CD-RW? Just drag my projects to my iPod, I leave an extra gig of space just for such a reason.

    Somebody ought to compile a list of every unfixed MS security related bug, and mail that, every single day, to any congress[person,critter,droid] that is consulting with microsoft on 'security'.

    I would, but I have neither the time, nor the bandwidth :)

    You're right, Linux is damn fast.

    Too bad Linux doesn't have applications like iTunes, Dreamweaver, or Microsoft Word. Hell, Linux programmers can't do anything without ripping ideas off other companies. Take a look at this screenshot and wonder... Do those blue blobs look familiar? They looks so identical to the iDisk icons! Hmmm....

    No worries, I'm sure Linux will be ready for the desktop "any day now."

    BTW, DOS was pretty damn fast also, too bad you can't do anything productive with it.
