FYI, you've got the whole "carrots and sticks" thing wrong -- the carrots are bait, and are not on sticks -- the sticks are used to beat victims into submission.

All of my perspectives agree - I don't think you could have explained the problems of OSS any better.

While we don't currently run any websites for schools, our web management system is probably a good match for your needs, and we'll be happy to strike a deal for a non-profit like a school. Take a look at what we have to offer, prices start at $8 per month, it's simple for even the meek to use, yet it has a very nice feature set.

  6. Close, but not quite - Note: Shameless Plug on ERP/CMS for Small Business IT consultants · · Score: 0, Troll

Check out www.beyourown.net. We've made a pretty complete CMS system, and though it's not free, it's really cheap (starts at $8/mo). It's built on a very powerful .NET API, which we've also created, and you could use to extend it for your needs. We'd also be happy to do that for you for a fee :).

It's a purely web-based solution right now, but we (or you) may create a Windows client in the future that can work offline and synchronize with the site via web services.

  7. Re:BeYourOwn.net -- Shameless Plug (Non-GPL) on Open Source Content Management Discussion? · · Score: 1

I should probably also mention that - even though our website does not openly advertise this - we have a very extensive and powerful web API/toolkit that we created, which not only powers our sites but is available for our customers to use to build upon our framework.

We're also not totally proprietary - in that we'll be happy to give you the database schema, and any information you need to work with that data on your own terms, give you web services to work with, etc.

And although we're not open source as in giving our only source of income away, if anybody is interested in getting involved and helping out, I don't see why we couldn't share resources :).

Suggestions, hate mail and prophetic statements welcome!

  8. BeYourOwn.net -- Shameless Plug (Non-GPL) on Open Source Content Management Discussion? · · Score: 1

While not open source, and not necessarily targeting those looking for a "CMS", we have created a very complete and easy-to-use CMS.

    http://www.beyourown.net

It's designed for and geared towards the newbie, but it's got all the features and power geeks demand.

It's not free, it's not open source, and it runs on Windows. But I'm a former Debian evangelist, so you can trust me (or not) when I say it's not evil. Take a look, it's pretty cool, and it was created by myself and just a few of my friends so we'll at least feel wicked special to see all the slashdot referrer entries tomorrow :).

  9. www.beyourown.net on An Automated Support E-Mail System? · · Score: 1

We've made a great CMS with hundreds of features integrated... including a GMail-like mail system with searching, labeling, etc. It's also got standard SMTP support and features, like aliasing. Mailing lists as well. Check it out -- it might not be exactly what you're looking for but I'm sure it'd get the job done :p.

If you live in any of the following areas...

    # Chicago, IL
    # New York, NY # Greater Boston, MA
    # Greater Providence, RI # Newport, RI
    # Westerly, RI

TowerStream may be something to look into. I use them as our primary connection at the office - they are far cheaper than a traditional T1 ($350/mo for 512k, $500 for 1.5mbit, they can handle around 5GBit max I believe).

True line-of-site is not required, a reflected signal is usually sufficient. An external flat-panel antenna about 6 inches tall and wide is required, however. With ours setup on the roof, we get 0% packet loss, and have had no problems through heavy snow, rain or thunderstorms.

I have occasionally had connection issues, where the wireless modem has needed to be power-cycled. I suspect, however, this is simply due to it overheating :).

  11. I respect Dvorak, but what's he on this week? on Dvorak On The Future Of The Xbox · · Score: 0

I highly respect this guy, he's a brilliant and insightful person, and rarely have I questioned his views.

However, the XBox is clearly superior to the PS2 in a number of ways - namely the hard drive eliminating memory card confusion and enabling faster load times. It's graphics are far superior (HDTV 1080i anybody?) and faster. Ethernet out of the box. Rips and plays music. It has four controller ports (Sony is retarded). Granted it has its weak spots - that you need to buy an extra "output adapter" and "remote control" to unlock all its features - but that's only to make up on the money lost by MS on the base system.

Anyway, it seems to me Dvorak is probably taking some really good drugs, in which case I strongly suggest he make that the topic of his next article. If that's not it, I smell the stench of Sony's deep pockets and strong desire to keep a weaker product in the lead, hurting everybody in the end (see: ZIP drive). Or, perhaps he's never actually used an XBox. But I doubt he'd lie, or take a bribe. Drugs it is - do tell. :)
