OpenCL code is a subset of c, with an API that the GPU must implement. So it will work on Cell (or any CPU) with gcc and a library implementing the API.
Open Source means all of us. X.org and Mesa don't have a magic cow that shits code, it has to be written by people in their spare time (and X.org is stagnating due to a lack of developer interest). Nobody on the OpenCL list particularly give a shit about linux, and adoption will happen with or without linux or open source. Instead of waiting for other people to tell you how to feel, maybe you should sit down and read the spec.
Microsoft isn't one of the companies listed. Which is probably a good thing, since they have a tendency to prevent progress then release their own proprietary version (ala OpenGL).
IBM is one of the worst offenders when it comes to filing stupid patents. Yes, they've donated patent for Open Source usage, but they're just as snakey as amazon (remember their bounty program, where they collected a-click patent prior art from the community and then used it to strengthen their claim that 1-click was innovative?)
I suspect a lot of slashdot readers are too new, have forgotten, or never learned of Fyodor's slashdot "girlfriend". Long story short -- a dude posted on slashdot, claiming to be a girl. Fyodor tried to hook up with "her" and "she" strung him along for awhile. After discovering "she" had dude parts, Fyodor hacked his computer and posted screenshots.
In grade school, we had a handful of Apple IIs (for AppleWorks, Oregeon Trail, Reader rabbit, and a few other educational titles). In high school, the library had a couple computers for the card catalog and CD-ROM encyclopedia, and there were a couple GW Basic/word processing rooms. So why do students need the internet for learning? Wikipedia is nice, but most schools are (rightfully) banning it. Instead of teaching math, should they just give out calculators and provide training for how to press the buttons on a McRegister? If people are graduating high school with a 6th grade level education, all the broadband in the world won't help them.
T Mobile is a company. Do you want to drop a cleveland steamer on every member of their board of directors? or maybe their CxO? Or maybe paid celebrity endorser Catherine Zeta Jones?
Copyright is specified in the Constitution. Drugs? Not so much. Why should drug prohibition require nothing more than a law when alcohol prohibition required a constitutional amendment? Oh, and the original excuses for banning drugs: black folks on cocaine or mexicans smoking marijuana might rape your white daughter.
Historically, there have been a LOT of undefined x86 opcodes that cause the cpu to shit all over itself, stomp memory, elevate priveleges, etc.
Those that don't understand java are doomed to repeat it.

There is no year 0.

Fuck IBM.
I don't know what it's doing, but I know what it's not doing: ACID.

I prefer to grind my knight in a club with lots of hot sweaty girls and booze.
nobody cares what you think.
You forgot #3: let the market correct itself and move on.

eh. They should give it away for free and sell support.

watch some tranny porn sometime.
If this trend continues, your "girlfriend" will have an XY set.
slashdot moderators and editors often use illegal drugs.
The 21st amendment will refute that: Section 1. The eighteenth article of amendment to the Constitution of the United States is hereby repealed.
If they have the optional power to do something specified, what kind of power do they have to do something that isn't specified?

lead therapy has proven effective.

I have a better explanation: awesome bar.
