... the band isn't actually named for one of its members or any real person at all, similar to Jethro Tull or Dave Matthew's Band.
The Dave Matthew's Band is named after (drumroll) Dave Matthews, the lead singer and guitarist. Jethro Tull is named after (drumroll) Jethro Tull, a British inventor from the 1800s, most famous for inventing a seed drill. Pink Floyd was named after Pink Something and Floyd Anderson, two American blues musicians.
OS X is subsidized by hardware sales. The last time they sold an OS that wasn't subsized by hardware sales, it was OpenStep, and it sold for ~$800. ~$1600 if you wanted the development version.
it seems like it's becoming a benefit that only older employees (ipo-millionaires) and executives (high salary, stock options) can enjoy. Sure, it's offered to everyone, but they're intentionally choosing a very expensive day-care program when a less expensive one was more than adequate. So people who would otherwise use it now go elsewhere (paying full price) while still subsidizing wealthier people who can afford it.
Has anyone watched Robin "roblimo" Miller's youtube videos? They're comedy gold, in an unintentional way. You'd think Open Source would get a better public face than roblimo, eric raymond, richard stallman, etc.
gNewSense is a good start towards giving the users FREEdom with an entirely FREE operating system. Binary blobs are bad. Those that are willing to sacrifice source code for working drivers deserve neither.
But I'm concerned it doesn't go far enough. Even if the distro doesn't include non-FREE software in the repositories, users can still download and use it. Perhaps the OS should include a whitelist of hashes for all FREE software and only allow it to be run -- non-FREE software would terminate (SIGNOTFREE?). Or maybe a better approach would be to only execute binaries which have been encrypted/signed by the FSF, so we know it's FREE software.
If Al Gore hadn't lost his home state of Tennessee, Florida wouldn't have mattered. Let's repeat: The voters in Tennessee voted Al Gore Sr in office (35 years), Al Gore [jr] in office (18 years), and twice elected him as Vice President. But they preferred George W Bush as president.
Well, slashdot hands out moderator points to certain people (based on how long they've been slashdot readers, how frequently they read, their karma, etc). When you have moderator points, you can moderate a post (funny, insightful, underrated, troll, etc). That's how.
even Richard Stallman has conceded that legally, dynamic linking cannot ever be derivation but only mere usage
Wow. It was hard to take him seriously when he was making extreme statements like that. If this trend keeps up, he may be reasonable in a few hundred years:)
That liquor store owner knows some customers will shoplift. He knows that some employees will help themselves to a bottle now and then. And he knows that somebody might pull a gun and empty the register.

You should think more. At least half of the still-current OSs listed are not free.

Unless you're a gov't employee, only half or fewer result in a day off.

maybe you should mount your wife's box more often?
I do have $10k lying around with nothing better to do, you insensitive clod.
tuxracer runs just fine on my $200 linux machine.

I think that would ensure FREEdom.
In both cases, it's encumbered with more provisions. But MS doesn't pretend that they're protecting your freedoms when they do so.

well, Apple/ATT have the iPhone. Sprint, T Mobile, google, and others are more interested in Android.
The Dan Quayles and Al Gores don't do shit except go to state funerals. The Dick Cheneys and Joe Bidens are the man behind the curtain.
How is this modded troll?

in other words, linux should be converted to a microkernel.

except when you infect a more permissive license, like BSD or MIT.
I literally laughed out loud :)
intel is inside.
the currently executing code will be moved into the processor's cache.
in that case, releasing firefox 2 was a violation of their own charter.
if it is the most important thing to keep updated, why are they stopping the V2 security updates half a year after v3 was released?
