Considering his track record, that's actually an improvement. C#/.NET is at least somewhat standardized and thought out. GNOME is a complete mess. Had that effort gone into GNUStep (which is standardized and thought out), OS X users would be envious of Linux.
Mocha was renamed to LiveScript, which was then renamed to JavaScript (and later ECMAScript). "JavaScript" is actually a Sun registered trademark. When JS first made it's oh-so-buggy appearance, I thought Netscrape was trying to jump on the Java hype, but I think Sun paid them to change the name.
the only gnu-related piece of nextstep was gcc, modified to support objective c. IIRC, Steve Jobs & co didn't want to release their modifications on the grounds that it was only a front-end to gcc and thus exempt from the GPL. Stallman complained and eventually prevailed.
Had they known the full implications, NeXT might have used a different compiler.
proprietary closed source compilers (intel, sun, irix, etc). The linux kernel can "sort of" be compiled with icc (but only since they added support for some non-standard gcc extensions). The linux kernel depends on non-standard gcc extensions, and for the longest time, even depended on specific versions of gcc. The *BSD kernels will compile (and run!) with multiple compilers.
maybe you've been sleeping, but they've been expanding into other territories. orkut, finance, mail, chat, usenet, news, checkout, googlebase/froogle, blogger, calendar, photos, maps, video, writely, etc. etc.
Some of those are search-related, but they were also search-related when yahoo!/netscape/msn/etc did them 5 years ago.
An option is the *right* to buy (or sell) at a fixed price, not the obligation to do so. For executives and even regular employees, they're usually granted (as in free, as in beer)[1] with a vesting period. If the option is underwater at maturity, you throw it away and you've lost nothing. Othrewise, (3.) profit!!!!
An ESPP (which the OP was talking about) allows employees to buy stock outright. You can lose money, but there is no vesting period (that's illegal). The company might give you a discount on the purchase price, though.
When I was working for the man, I had some token stock options as well as the ESPP. The executives had significant stock options and the ESPP.
[1] You can buy and sell options on the open market as with other securities. However, the pricing is quite different. A September 15th AAPL call @ $60.00 is currently trading at $8.00, whereas AAPL stock is trading at $66.14. If you think AAPL will be selling for 70 on september 15 and have $10,000 to gamble, you could buy 151 shares of AAPL (potential profit = $582) or 1,250 options (potential profit = 2,500).
mysql_escape_string() vs mysql_real_escape_string()
When PHP was built, as a set of perl scripts, perl used DBI for databse stuff. And it worked. I don't understand why php fucked it up and then created all the above problems to deal with it.
would you rather of [sic] seen Google contribute to hotmail or yahoo mail rather than creating gmail? Or maybe they should have contributed to yahoo, msn, or altavista instead of creating their own search engine?
I investigated using the enterprise version of sourceforge about a year ago. We looked at the source code (from before they closed it) and decided it was a horrible mess and poorly designed. They may have cleaned it up after they closed it, but I wasn't impressed.
A few months later, Wikipedia surpassed slashdot in popularity. And while slashdot (and everything2.com) struggle with slow response time and strange errors, wikipedia has uptimes that would make a viagra-popping porn star envious. Wikis are scalable, Malda is just a shitty programmer.

[commercial] google videos use DRM. Is it good or is it whack?

please disregard any suggestions from "CmdrTaco."
you're inadvertently pointing out more php failures.

I knew her when she worked at berkeley (I think she works for yahoo! now). She really knows her shit.
Yeah, I told them you were retarded, but they felt sorry for you.
it was a false ceiling. The only purpose was to hide the unsightly fans needed for air circulation.
Hint: Something lighter would have worked just as well and might have been cheaper and safer.
Something lighter... that wouldn't have fallen in the first place.
How can the police be sure that official uniforms won't be used to identify police officers for later revenge attacks?
Yeah, popularity is a great guide to correctness (*windows vs linux*).
I overheard half of a phone conversation this morning:
In some parts, that language is popular. Does it take an English snob to call that incorrect?
Most non-compete agreements are for a limited time (like 1 year). Excessively long terms have been struck down in court.

If google can do something better, they should.
I think it's like arguing whether cow shit tastes better than dog shit.
Jeezus, just buy a ball gag, some leather, and find someone to dominate you.
Yeah, right. And your mom would rather you rape her than discovering the joys of gay sex.
That's a good business model for slashdot.... I'd pay $5 to punch scuttlemonkey.
sulfer is one reason ass gas (and cow shit) smells so bad. The sulfer content is quite high.

I prefer women on the bottom. Or doggystyle.
Zonk: Just because everyone else dugg it, that doesn't mean you have to.
