    x86 instructions that deal with 2 data points can be written 2 ways:

    instr src,dest
    instr dest,src

    The intel standard (used by nasm, tasm, masm) is dest,src. The ATT standard (used by gas) is src,dest

    They're advocating sending in unused coupons so they can buy multiple copies of music from indie artists. If you don't want to install iTunes, that's an ok proxy, I guess, and better than just throwing them out.

    I think a better approach would be if all slashdot readers (or tunecycler advocates) would get indie music. tunecycler could list a new artist or song to check out every couple days, and pepsi-guzzling geeks could get a free song. That would put money in the indie artist's pocket and expose more people to their music, something their approach doesn't do.

    If you're an engineer who works at Real, I'd like to pose the same question so many people want to ask SCO's tech guys: why in the hell are you wasting your talents working for the biggest shitweasels in the marketing (Real) or legal (SCO) businesses?

    I used to be an engineer at Real. Most of us got fired a couple years ago. I think the programming is done out of India, or one of those former soviet republics.

    if the prosecutor doesn't turn over exculpatory evidence to the defense, assuming it's later discovered, there's a good chance the conviction will be overturned.

    There's nothing OSDN about it. It's all match.com, OSDN gets a referral fee if you subscribe.

    I think there was a poll a few months ago about online dating, and (not amazingly) a lot of slashdotters met their true love that way. I'd be more impressed if they posted her pic though.

    Last winter, I bought 3 12-packs of coke and left 2 in my car for a couple weeks.

    I can't say if they exploded or not, but all were bulged out at the top and bottom, and around 1/3 developed tears or the top separated. 2 of them looked like they might have exploded.

    They were still in the 12-pack carton, and it never warmed, so the mess was minimal.

    If you poke around on the FSF web site, you will find a paragraph that reccomends using the XFree86 license if submitting code to them since they won't accept GPL and their isn't a GPL replacement for it.

    RMS would suggest you release your driver under the XFree86 license if you want it included with XFree86. Otherwise, you could keep it GPLd and have it be distributed separately.

    The advertising clause isn't incompatible with the GPL.

    AV software is just like regular software. McAffee sells it to stores, stores sell it to people.


    A lot of the spam you see for cheap AV software (or anything else) are probably stolen, pirated, last year's copy, etc, but not legitimate.

    Word on the Web is that XBox 2 uses IBM PPC chips. Current XBox, of course, is x86.

    Of course, MS did buy Virtual PC, which had an x86 emulator for Macintosh/PPC.

    Of course, XBox 2 will have a different graphic chip than XBox 1.

    So we'll have to wait and see.

    I misunderstood his argument initially. He's not talking about FreeBSD, he's talking about GNU.

    Since the early/mid 80s, the GNU project had been building up a collection of "not unix" tools (emacs, gcc, etc). The last piece of a full GNU OS was the kernel (HURD). Before it was finished (long before, it's still not ready for prime time), some punk kid releases a kernel, and suddenly all your work is ignored.

    lilypond is listed as having planned support for MusicXML.

    Lilypond takes forever to compile, but the output is amazing (thanks, TeX!)
