What's really needed from space manufacturing is the tools to continue space exploration. For truely state of the art space stuff the drop-out rate of parts is near 50% that you have to make to get enough usable ones.. that number's gotta get way down. Not to mention were're starting to make the technology leap from cutting parts out of blocks of stuff to steering the building of the momlecules that make up stuff... there's not the facilities on earth to do that economicaly
But how do you get the glass back from space? You gotta "drop" it down to earth to get it back, right!
Of course I understand the real ability is to work with micro sized pieces we'd never be able to manapulate here. at that scale glass is nearly as strong as metal... espically flawless glass.
Seriously, without serious network software how could a normal user even prove they WEREN'T hacked... more than that, are there ANY tools that let networks REQUEST users to modify behavior... not the BOFH type "pull the plug" but responsible tools that monitor the connection quality and report back things that are suspecious so the user can fix them?
It'd be a great OSS project and a great firefox plugin!!
the idea is to figure out where the masters come from or better yet, what the commands look like.... then program the router to drop those packets. That effectively cuts the masters off wherever they may be! This is grey-hat BOFH stuff at it's best!
Microsoft is primarily a United States chartered corporation... run by US citizens.. therefore they sould be compelled to adhere to US rules of civility. how US citizens can do this to citizens of another nation is the real issue here. Isn't it a bit of a conflict for the US to preach "freedom" to the Chineese while our largest corporations get their pockets lined by the dictatorship for blocking the attempts of other US citizens to introduce them to freedom?
note they didn't specify how many were kiddy... they tell you the whole collection of LEGAL naughty stuff and actually charge you for some of them. A statement like that should be lying by "ommision" on part of the agent.. but they get away with it in court every day
"viewing" kiddie Pr0n can't be considered illegal.. freedom to view what you wish and all. They can only ban producing or distributing it.. So they have to get you on the Possession charge because you might pass it on. One of those little ironies of our current "wars" is that even prohibition couldn't ban "posession" of alchol at the time.. it could ban manufacture, transport, and selling, but posession was a god-given right... let alone consumption... the modern idea of "posession by consumption" or "viewing" was universally unconstitutional even to the people that wrote the prohibition amendment.
Back to the topic though, it's very dangerous to ban a "thing"... the kiddie pic racket is just about as lucrative for law enforcement as looking for drugs. They confenscate all sorts of stuff never even part of a "computer" as evidence and you never get it back..even if you're innocent. It's become "pick on the little guy" where the "viewers" get busted much more harshly than the professional people actually molesting children. If you've followed prosecutions on slashdot you'd see they are WAY out of line.. they "recover" your entire drive with spy-level tools, and when they procecute you they show the worst pics... legal or not.. they research everything [things you have no conceviable way of knowing] and may get you on something you thought was "barely 18" because somebody cheated on their app.
The whole thing shows you just how little "freedom" you really have when it's not "socially acceptable". It's one of the few "gitmo" type crimes out there much like homosexuality where the general public has no idea how "cowboy" the cops really are. I have no love of kiddy pics, but the current enforcement is dangerous... they pushed "patriot" thru just to get THESE people.. not terrorists.
But what about the OTHER IE cache... the one that's a hidden file? Or what about un-delete programs that retrieve "lost" files... It's not "gone" from your computer unless you shatter the hard drive platters....
Your post is exactly why apple should bust out and help some of the OSS projects. more than that help out open standards... because it takes base away from MS.
Their current in-house efforts would be very "coopa-tition" 'ish with the vanilla OSS projects. Things like Safari/KHTML, samba, fink, etc... if they'd just open up and realize that the OSS will never catch them, then they can lead the pack. All Pages needs is OASIS or Scribbus compatible input/output so it can cooperate with windows/linux users. Then Apple becomes like a Linux distro provider.. you get the whole package of Apple parts that work really well, and you can still work with all your friends that are using RedHat or Ubuntu!
Linux isn't really a theat to apple.. they sell hardware! Linux just "mooches" off all the disgruntled MS users with spare computers. Who's not going to look at a windows PC with nothing [+ $300 office] versus a linux distro [$99 for everything plus a kitchen sink in there... hack it yourself] versus an apple [$150 for iLife +iWork] with spit n polish on everything.
because cuba managed to get itself out from under being another "Hawaii". Much like in Hawaii, the american businesses tried taking over the rightful govt and expecting the US to back them up... Castro stepped in and didn't just take over the country, but got Russia to back him up. He solved the problem of forgein interests by nationalizing everything the businesses owned... If you look at the fate of every non-comunist dictatorship in the carribean, I'd say Cuba is actually doing very well.. inspite of the US not trading with them...
Of course the "embargo" doesn't prohibit the US army from renting real estate so they can break the US constitution and other basic US laws... funny how that works!!!
more than that it used to be SO easy for an admin to just pass a coworker one for "work at home" and that's why MS ensured their lock for so long.. Corps have money to pay and money to loose for piracy.. workers don't.. as long as companies & students could play the double standard it worked in MS benifit to allow the "piracy" versus people choosing something else based on its true cost.
Unoffical or not, OSX even pirated for x86 would be signalling the start of a war!!! Being as apple has no intention to sell it as a product anyway a "leak" wouldn't hurt them. It would just get more people to try it out and ready and waiting at the gates for the release of intel hardware... and spike the sales of cheap Mac Mini's in the meantime.
Frankly, I think Apple needs to shore up OSS on linux just to get people off windows. Like the KHTML issue, iTMS on windows already runs that code! I'd be another shot at MS to open up the browser in iTunes Windows... and because it's based on a Linux browser, OSS people would already be in the loop. All they have to do now is get OASIS formats into their pre-installed iLife + iWork and they'll be golden for cross platform work. The only real thing Apple needs for Linux to be "complete" is iTunes and Quicktime made just for linux...it would fill a lot of the legal media on OSS issues [heck they could sneak a DVD player in their just for fun!]... even if they just had to "WINE" it so it can't be hacked as easily. Remember, all the x86 machines out there aren't future sales, but the network effect of co-opting them for NOT-windows would turn the tide on the NEXT round of hardware purchases. If apple would just roll over and choose SDL for gaming then Linux gaming would also be a recompile away.. and windows would be the "odd boy out"
It's right there, MS is distracted, take it if you can!!!
Dell has proven that they only want to make cheap stuff... they used to brag they made "PCs" now they just make "clones" but make them cheaply. Intel needs somebody to really show off their cutting edge stuff...which no normal PC maker will do. Enter apple looking for a new partner. Intel just lost the Xbox account anyway.. and the writing on the wall is that MS will stab them in the back just as fast as every other partner.. It's foolish of Intel NOT to take the opportunity to develop hardware that breaks all the PC rules and start over from scratch.. frankly they'll be Intel's "demo" group and just let everybody else copy them.
the big iron Unix is where apple needs to get to if they want to say a botique provider. I'm an AS400 fan, but several other of the mini-computers are also of similar "personality".
HP already has some dealing with apple, and the combination of OSX interface built on a true die-hard unix "basement" would be really hard to resist. I personally was hoping for an IBM/apple cooperation... a G5 OSx "front" to an AS400 would have been really sweet... talk about iron fist & velvet glove... But HP-apple could do the same thing.... espically if they brought back the midrange boxes they killed off. There's lots of people that cried when that stuff went away... bringing it back would make a lot of admins happy.
NO, Obi-Wan would have know instantly.. both droids spend extensive time with anakin.. his "force" would have been all over them... also they were carrying a message from Luke's sister.. so their was then no doubt.. but of course Obi-Wan can't explain everything to luke right now... I'd love to see a story about that week on tatooine from Obi-Wan's point of view as the force brings all the pieces together.
First there's no way Obi-Wan would have tipped his hand that early... if R2 was meeting Luke it wasn't by "accident" it was the will of the force. Obviously, R2 really DID remember the way home!!! remember when they argue which way to go.... R2 is ALWAYS right. C3PO had to be wiped...he was built by a genius kid and far more querky than the average protocol droid... way to talkative!!! R2 got off easy because he couldn't talk.. he was a top of the line royal droid custom tweeked by anakin so he's definately not a standard droid. remember the bit about he's not miswired!!
Also, that would give away their position by using their force powers to train and bring vader down on them in a hot minute. Attempting to train them as children is pointless if they can't apply the knowlage as adults... They litteraly waited until the empire forced their hand by killing luke's "parents". Luke had to stay hidden and live long enough to fight, the jedi part he'd have to figure out later.
Actually Lucas himself hinted at that point of view shortly after phantom menace. In a way he did bring "balance" to the force. There were 2 sith and many Jedi... he "evened" the score by leaving only 2 jedi!
no, but we know they were used as slave labor, many non-human races were, That's how han saved chewie. That at the same time, the emporor had a decidedly human bias. perhaps he killed of the wookies just becase they let yoda escape.
I'd love to see a story about the week or two while the droids were on tattoine. Obi-Wan had to know instantly it was THAT R2-D2. He can't spill the beans that that droid WAS Luke's fathers, watching his sister... Other than the OH-$**t it's time to start the final battle. Obviously, Owen lars told him to stay away.. and in a certian way Luke had the humble beginning he needed to be a Jedi... the powers are easy to teach.
You'd be saying they were working on the prototype at the Maw installation. They only half completed it and left it as a skeloton after they go the weapons working. I thought it was kind of cute to introduce the Death Star that early on. It's realistic to think it took 15-20 years to build. Also, the second one was well under construction when the first was destroyed.. that was in a Zahn short story.
Darth Sidious was operating on a 100 year plan.. he planned 15 years ahead to order the clones! he was developing the tools behind the scenes to totally control everthing. It also gives more meaning to the beginning of ANH because we come into the tail end of the story when the emporor makes his empire final 20 years later by disbanding the senate.. he kept the gag going another 20 years, routing out all opposition before becomming supreme ruler.
I think you hit right on it. You have to teach kids to see both the mechanics and the emotion behind things. We really have to learn to let kids relish the good things too.. in general we're really bad about keeping boys from "girlie" things. teach kids to feel the range of emotions and not just the fighting, anger, hating ones...
I wanted that POV shot to last about 2 seconds longer.. the whole problem with the editing was it just moved along too fast. I'd sit thru an extra 15 minutes to get it just right.
four's probably a little too young, but if they've seen all the others, just cover their eyes at the 2-3 bad parts... There's definately something to discuss. I find the slaying of the jedi kids usually stirs more questions than Anakin being burned. it's more real to them.
The first time I saw it I was a bit shocked too! But that IS the point of film... graphically it wasn't over the top, but graphic enough to stir some emotion and make you remember it.
my other line was voulanteering to lend a boot up there!
