On top of that the REAL issue is that the data doesn't go "through" Comcast to anybody except THEIR customers, who are paying for "internet" access. This is why we have the breakdown. Nobody is running large internet services over "retail" providers because those ISPs have long structured themselves to be "leechers-only". The ENTIRE POINT of that decision 15 years ago was to create the stuffed pipes we have now. One set of companies own the cross-country "highway" but another set of companies own the "last mile".
it's not really a "peering" situation at all. It's Comcast trying to charge somebody for "access" to Comcast's internet customers.
In a world with proper "net neutrality" Netflix would be able to host their data where it was closest to the customers, but the current network layouts make ISPs "gatekeepers" for ALL customer traffic, even when folks across the street have ATT vs Comcast the traffic is routed "out" to Chicago then back to Michigan. It's all incredibly wasteful.
the problem is not "one set fee". it's the ridiculous overage charges.
ATT's iPhone plan used to allow 5GB as "unlimited". Then they knocked $5 off the price and put a cap 60% of the original "product". THEN called it flexibility when they offered a 1/2 price plan with 5% of the data.
If ATT needed more money, they could have OFFERED more data for a higher price. You'll notice NONE of the bandwidth based operations do that. If service and data is (for example) $25 for 2GB, then why is the NEXT 2GB not "only" $20 more? That's how stuff in "real world" works. The ridiculous amounts like $1 per Megabyte (or $2000 for the same overage) is what the government needs to address. THAT is the real problem. The government also needs to address the fact that these companies charge amounts 100x the cost of a monthly bill with a straight face. If the company does a credit check, how can they justify those prices... throwing shit at a wall to see what sticks? Their whole model is built on low "monthly payments" then tricking people into using high profit items like information, overages, text-per-month charges, etc.
if the Private/Sergent had access to the conversations they were probably on government owned computers/networks. Meaning that somebody COULD put in an FOIA request for these materials... but how would a journalist know what to ask for when a lot of the stuff happening is relayed between "underlings" while the actual decisions were made by Brass in person or over the phone, never in writing.
From reading this, it looks more like somebody was doing this for revenge, not patriotism. Of course if it was REALLY dangerous, or important, a CIA team would be at WikiLeaks hosting and simply take it, and the maintainer would be given a "suicide". It might upset the Swedes for about 5 minutes, but what can they really do? It's kind of like when we rendition suspected terrorists sympathizers from Spain a few years back. If this was anything other than a nuisance, somebody would be waking up dead by suicide.
They are HIGHLY competent at what they're doing... That's why they're doing this. They don't want "discourse" with the "subjects" they just want to clear things up with telcos, ISPs, and hardware makers to see if the Department has exposed them to any lawsuits.... and if so tweak the law so that the letter of the law matches current practice. In short this is most likely a CYA session, why would you want "civil rights groups" present while we're changing the law so we stop breaking it.
If you're taking that route then the parents collected the money each month... then spent it each year. Now they don't "want" to collect the money anymore, AND the idea of college is "nonsense" now... after collecting the money for years and using it for other stuff. Now the money tree is dry and there's not enough to scrape up for their promises they made when they spent the money.
sold, released, whatever, the point is the same. They had products in the pipe the people BEGGED to PAY for. In a time when most OTHER tech companies couldn't sell a paper bag, Apple released a whole new product and updates to all its others. In fact you would be correct, Apple didn't "innovate" in 2010, they innovated on products like iPad in 2008 and 2009 when the stock market crashed, banks failed, and automakers went bankrupt..... most companies were in severe layoff mode. Apple was chugging away spending money on NEW products.
Rethink that statement again, and awe in their ability to manage and grow their business even when chips were terrible.
Part of this year's sales is just that, Apple had NEW products on tap and people are just starting to loosen their purses a bit. They get one "treat" product this year and Apple was ready for them. You'll notice only the makers of "cheap crap" and "impulse buys" are still having a bad time, makers of BMWs Apples, etc are doing great, people aren't spending as much on crap, but they finally have enough to spend on something nice.
but if you take that course, then corporations can have Zero lobbyest, and zero contributions to ANY political organization. They should be treated like the hostile para-governmental agencies they really are. Corporate taxes would not be needed if they weren't allowed to retain earnings. You have companies like Apple and Microsoft piling up BILLIONS in untaxed profits. They become their own little "warlords" while their "stockholders" the real owners, get almost nothing. This is the entire problem of "capitalism" that these companies have enough money to BUY small countries, corporate tax is supposed to drain that money if they DON'T give it out to stock holders, because when they pay it to stockholders, the stockholders pay taxes on it.
except in that respect it's just like the USA. Companies threaten to leave states like New York, California, Michigan all the time.. while having soaked in 30 years of profit. The companies don't "leave" they just stop paying taxes where all the people are and move to the "country" where they only bring in the people they need. Back to the housing boom, that was a big part of the game because companies would build new factories and need new "executive" subdivisions built, that was how the locals got rich and plenty of taxes. Now that those houses aren't worth anything and new ones aren't being built, the new "locals" are realizing that they need these companies paying their "fair share" of taxes.... which is a boon to the states that never let the big corporations off the hook in the first place.
back on topic, most of the companies are pulling roots from UK, Germany, etc to the newly minted members of the EU, the former Eastern Bloc countries. Just like Ireland swooped in and nicked business from the more established countries, the new additions are doing the same thing. It's the best of both worlds, still in the EU so the Euros transfer, but the people work for half the wages and property is 1/10 the cost. The best of both worlds, just like "in-sourcing" in the USA from California to Kansas.
exactly, first you have to ask why are all these people SELLING gold for dollars if it's so important, unless they are getting the gold from other countries because of the currency difference. Second, it's not like they send you the physical gold. They keep it in their big safe (and probably sell it multiple times anyway) so when it's all hell in a handbasket YOUR life savings will be "owned" by somebody else anyway.
Actually paper money is useful for a lot of reasons. England in the middle ages was so gold poor even a small amount of gold was worth far more than what it paid for, to the point that most regular folks bartered because "regular" folk simply weren't allowed to even HAVE precious metals. You'd work all year to get one piece of gold so you could pay your taxes with it, cause the king really didn't need another dozen chickens or turnips.
except the REASON Social Security and Medicare don't have the money is that when tax revenues were higher than the amount needed for the services, the government pocketed the money instead of setting it aside. Now we NEED 20 years worth of that pocketed money. With compound interest, that is multiple years of FULL funding that we don't have NOW. In short, the people retiring now spent their money on "below cost" taxes for decades, there's not enough cash generation as the current boomers have a) been let go from employment way too soon (call it the free market) and b) there are not enough kids of boomers to pay enough taxes to cover the difference to pay "cash" for the benefits if they wanted to.
There might be a saving element if we could get all the illegal immigrants on the tax roles, that would balance the boomers that didn't have enough kids to support them. Once they can openly apply for benefits, their employers can be sued (and jailed) for back employment taxes evasion, that should net some big money, and Republicans love taking money from "lawbreakers" and funding jails!
seriously, the point is that Social Security was SUPPOSED to be it's own trust fund the government set aside. It takes in 15% of your pre-tax pay right off the top. REALLY think about how much money that is...
The "college fund" analogy fits perfectly, parents would think themselves clever by setting aside money from their paychecks every week.. that's a good, responsible plan. Except if they use the money for a home project (maybe the deck was unsafe, whatever, it doesn't really matter) then it's not just the SAVINGS taken out, it's the INTEREST on the savings they just lost. 7 years later that $10k you used for repairs WOULD have been $20k you don't have NOW to pay for school.
So the original point stands. Sure you might have more wages now, but that means you need more CASH money right now to pay for the college and that causes a financial "crisis" that you didn't "plan" to have, but you didn't stick to the original plan to keep the money separate in the first place.
This is exactly what's happening with Social Security now the government was supposed to be setting some money aside for these benefits they knew were coming, but now they have to pay them all out of current taxes, and it's not enough without being crushing debt on the kids.
if the forms and motions were not VALID, the court clerk would simply return them to sender along with a note that the motion is invalid. If the courts are accepting these "boilerplate" responses there must be something to them, or the court would sanction this guy directly.
but a lawyer would know not to do that. Contrary to everybody here, most lawyers I have asked for advice have been VERY clear not just whether something is a form to be filed, but that THEY are only allowed to make certain arguments, and the courts frown steeply on going outside the lines.
In this case, if the information is a packet of the FAQ variety, explaining what you were sued for, with the appropriate self-representation forms included they'll have a tough time. The big problem is that there are not a lot of Copyright lawyers that don't deal exclusively with corporations. The vast majority of lawyers in the local Yellow Pages would not have a clue what you're even being sued FOR, let alone the dirty little secrets that the other side didn't follow the courts instructions in the first place. In many state and federal jurisdictions, "suing IP addresses" has been banned outright. Your LOCAL attorney is not nearly qualified enough to open a case against the actual merits of how they got your name in the first place, they are only allowed to fight the case in front of them, i.e. the "debt collector" case. Once the Federal paper is waved, they often lack cause to even touch the original case for how the Copyright suits got the information, which probably would have been illegal in YOUR Federal courts, but YOUR local lawyer isn't ALLOWED by the courts to make such "outrageous" claims.
That doesn't stop them from finding the one Judge that still allows it and once they have the case taking the "debt" case back to the same courts that refused the "IP address" cases. This is a big flaw in the Federal system because while the mid-country federal courts have ban the line of filing suit altogether, the east/west/south coast courts keep allowing them. The big problem is that the legal PRECEDENT is circuit by circuit, but the judgments made in ANY of the federal courts are upheld by all of them. The only court that can MAKE all the other courts rule in a certain way is the Supreme Court, which only hears cases dealing with "Constitutional" value, not day-to-day inequalities in their own system.
the point is exactly that... it NEVER GOES TO GREEN or blue.
Of course, to do this they would have to admit we were "secure" which would mean it's time to wind down the wars and making talk of scaling back military and para-military operations. That's bad for the brand new cabinet-level agency!
By not REDUCING the level, it makes the current level a joke, everybody knows it. Sure, in the land of "Jack Bauer" there is a threat every single day... but with 300 Million people the pure odds of killing even 100 people at once are staggering as to be pure chance.
The article makes it clear he was a very highly placed engineer, probably "Sr. something" or "Chief something". Essentially they hired a MANUFACTURING engineer when the product wasn't ready for the assembly line to be set up... from the sound of the article, they NEVER set up the line and left him pushing a desk for over a YEAR, not doing his profession. Then he found out they only hired him because they were looking for partners to come up with the rest of the money to START the project.
Given his status this is probably no more than a few years wages. Not to mention having tanked his career as he's not worth that wage now, AND he gave up his home in a major city, probably at a big loss considering the market.
but why should that matter in a FREE OS? Why should something that works today, not work tomorrow because of a different app version or an updated driver? Most importantly, why have we still not solved the problem of IDENTIFYING when hardware falls off and letting you know BEFORE you install it? This should be dead simple to match up hardware strings with what's in the configuration files for the new version.
So your saying any random men should feel up kids... just to get them used to being groped by strangers..... and they used to have to wait until Junior High school for the locker room....
It's not child molesting... it's a public service!!!
exactly, the recent case of the guy who had to live with peeing in a bag. He tried to request they be careful, or even ASK what they wanted.. until they squeezed his bag of piss all over him. The entire point what that THEY didn't want to be told what to do, THEY didn't want to pay attention, they wanted to prove a point... and they did... he inconvenienced them and they made him miss his flight and embarrassed him in public. The whole thing is a clear example that THEY DON'T CARE WHAT YOU THINK, they are going to do this ANYWAY especially BECAUSE you don't like it.
If the TSA and FAA was really serious, they would do like the medical centers and consult with Disney and the amusement park industry for how to handle large volumes of people quickly, safely, and respectfully. Getting a few hundred people an hour on a plane should be a piece of cake. Amusement parks put thousands of people per day into tiny carts standing in the hot July Sun, quickly and safely. Why can't multi-Billion dollar airlines? Because they don't have to CARE that's why. There is no excuse for the deplorable mess mass transportation is right now, especially because airports have near complete control of passengers... it's their own petty bureaucracies they can't control.
Just like the Nazis. first they were only sending political criminals, then capitalists, and when the guards were well trained (and up to their eyeballs in murder too) they rounded up the women and children like cattle. It may be Godwins law, but here we stand at the ENTIRE POINT of the matter, scanning all the way to our skin and STILL claiming it's not enough security.
Knowing ALL THAT the bozos in Congress allowed the TSA to be created anyway. Ironically Rush was complaining about the "new" extreme procedures... of course there was no problem when "Democrats" were being hassled. It's hilarious that the right-wingers are all over this like it has anything to do with Obama. They cheered while Cheney/Bush created a whole new Cabinet level position, accountable to essentially nobody with access to the NSA, CIA, and FBI and no strings attached. This is funny that it turns around now.. after all they have to look busy or Obama will scale them back.
They need to remake Lost for the after 9/11 airport security.
This is where the flight is properly screened and there is nothing vaguely "dangerous". In this version everybody dies in the first week, no boxcutters, knifes, or manuals, no Boy Scouts allowed on the flight to save them!!!
the issue is that "China" bought the patents, not "Chinese companies". Sure a company bought them, but the GOVERNMENT passes out the manufacturing where needed, meaning those engineers get a big pile of patents from all the companies at once!! That's something impossible to get in First World. In the first world, to build something like the train, it would take a hundred contractors bickering with each other, to get half the results. Each company would petition the government to use it's proprietary motor, gears, tracks, etc, etc so the finished system is a poorly constructed mash of a bunch of stuff companies grudgingly allowed to work together.
In China they skim the best of the patents (and they manufacture all this for the first world anyway so they know the cost/benefits better than anyone) and build THAT. In the next decade they're going to get SO far ahead of everyone else it will be silly.
the real joke is that because of nearly everybody exporting production to China, they end up with many "factories" that see the BIG PICTURE even better than in first world companies because they get to build stuff for LOTS of companies that's being hidden from each other in their OWN countries. Think FoxConn with their Apple contracts. Eventually, FoxConn will fix so many of Apple's problems that only petty little "patents" will keep them from starting their own business selling iPads inside China. Rinse and Repeat for thousands of other businesses.
ON TOP OF ALL THAT, Chinese PHd/Grad students and visa holders pillage stuff all the time, and pass it back to factories in China, this is directly out of the research of the big companies that "need" foreign workers long before the patents are even filed!
China is a lot like the USA in the 1920's it's a land of robber-barons while a small portion of the public becomes a "middle" class. I don't see China falling for the unlimited power of corporations like the USA did...
What do trees have to do with storing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere?
Personally, I think we should collect the carbon underground in big reserves.
