    i have L-users in the sys admin sense, and i support sys admins on multiple platforms. there's fear in them there eyes.

    my one objection to that is the mac users. they are just as unknowledgable as the lot (even more so than win users even) yet they seem to have fewer problems, far fewer.

    bottom line, IE is a curse to the average user.

    too bad u cannot think abstractly.

    its not just the general technophobia, its the nasty stuff that happens to these poor folks all the time, before they call me to fix it.

    things like spyware installs (yes, they click OK on anything), pages that crash systems, format systems, popup hell, etc. . . . .

    i will clarify something, cuz it is important and supports my point. Windows, eh hem, Internet Explorer is the worst culprit for these exploits usually, the m$ CrippleJava is pathetic too. if they used today's mozilla, they might not be so afraid, but look around man. ask your winbloze users if they are afraid to do ______________ (fill in activity here online) and everyone will find something I and you might consider mundane.

    on windows boxen. come on, your hard drive can be reformatted by surfing to a web page! is it any wonder that people are so afraid of their machines???? and with the plethora of bugs and twiching that spouts out of Redmond, only a third of the poor L-Users will get a fix.

    is it just me, or does surfing the web on a win box feel like living in some bad neighborhood just trying to avoid the next drive by shooting???

    DIS and GUSTING!

    i only work with one large corporate right now. i'm just a contractor (in microsoftese that would be oucast slave) but am treated very well for a guy who's never met the folks who sign the checks. they are a power company and a large nation wide one. not to name names, but they have alot of wind power as well as local monopoly power where i live. they're a good company . . . . anyhow

    since i'm doing Intranet Development for them, they have told me a bit about my target audience. the whole company is run on win2k with office 97, ie 5.5 service pack 2 . that's right, they refused extortion version 6.0. heck, their servers are all apache 1.3 on win2k.

    m$ is just conniving at their own destruction with this crap! /end rant

    that to build the matrix movies, requires the bros. and co. to BUILD THE MATRIX. or at least develop the type of technology that would make a real matrix VR world a possibility.

    so, by making movies about it, we are slowly bringing the possibility of something like the matrix closer to reality!

    would anyone on /. object to "Matrix" prisons for criminals? what about for the severely physically disabled? just for research?

    some sort of m$ april fools joke. how does it go? ah yes, if we sacrifice the basic functionality to add features, we can sell loads of ______________ (crappy non-windoze product here) and to date this has made money how???

    yesterday, i was on a m$ box and typed in only "msnbc" into the IE window as if i was using mozilla which automatically would resolve the .com for me. oops, that's the msn search, and wouldn't you know it, msnbc is second in the msn search listings for msnbc! the first listing was some crackpot conspiracy theory site.

    lets face it, if microsoft made toothpics, they would be flat and long like playing cards and somehow integrate into windows.

    but you left out the most wonderful thing about using Mac OS. it worked this way in classic and does it in X with a vengence.

    the Drag and Drop. yes, drag and drop is an art in Mac OS and in X you can drag any file onto any app running or not, to launch said file. it works like a champ. grab ten jpegs and drop them onto Photoshop, boom! grab a file with no extension and a blank icon, drag onto stuffit expander and that .tgzipped doc from some solaris developer's package magically unzips.

    other than a cash out . . . what reason does google really have for an IPO? what do they care about reviving the IPO market?

    to answer the first, NO LEGITIMATE REASON. speaking as an entrepreneur, one of the greatest rewards of owning a (i like to think for myself as well) successful business is the control over one's own life that accompanies the independence of private ownership. when you go public, you must answer to the market as a whole and your major investors one a time to justify your business planning. that is a time consuming affair. frankly, i'm amazed that publicly held companies get anything accomplished considering they spend a large portion of time and resources answering the built in second guesser's forums that public ownership holds.

    second question. google's prior actions show more concern about their own profitability and integrity, than what is happening to the world that they are cataloguing.

    in a world looking for a savior (as always), they aren't the one.

    my i88s nextel phone has a GPS reciever and its certainly not a cutting edge device. i don't use them cuz they are cutting edge, i like em cuz they are reliable and they will call me two weeks before my disconnect date to remind me to send them money :)

    granted, my phone won't do all the shiny interactive stuff that this otehr one will, but it isn't new technology and to me not newsworthy.

    i think this is the first pro-consumer news item of real signifigance that i have seen all year! i thought compassion was for the poor billion dollar a year, monopoly supported companies like sprint and verizon.

    let's all cross our fingers that Powell Jr. is more successful with his negotiations with multi national powers, than his father has been this year.

    personally, i'll believe it when i see it.

    the things can already be made into .exe files. if they need occasional connection, they log on. i guess this gives the app a way to store info locally, but distributed work environments quickly loose sync if you're not on quite a bit.

    who needs banner ads anyway? the only traffic that a banner ad really drives is the volume on the floor of the nasdaq (well, on the network anyhow). seriously folks, they do some good, and did alot of good when they were so new they were still interesting, but the reality is, they were the first honest lie of the internet boom.

    that's sprint's way of saying that they would much rather keep you locked into your phone number with them, which i have seen keep people around even when they hate sprint. i had sprint for two years. they f$#%'ed up my bill once every two weeks and then cut me off for being two days late on payment, all the damn time. they stink!!!!!

    and since they are being forced to change this odious practice which was acceptible in the infancy of the cellphone age, but certainly in the best interests of providers, now, it is hindering their "quality of service". WHAT SERVICE?

    my mother was the proud recipient of . . . . an iMac. the story is like this . . ..

    about three years ago, i was in compUSA lookin around with some friends when i stumbled thru the floor models area and there were two, 333 mhz imacs, just sitting there. i got a price, $500 bucks, called home, and after goading them for six or so hours convinced them to get the machine.

    they had been talking about getting a computer since i was in jr. high, and they really needed to get into the digital age. at that point i was long out of the house, and they kept bitching that they couldn't figure out why i thought the internet job i had was any good. so i figured, they needed the machine.

    bottom line. my "mommy spam" folder has been flooded ever since. for a 50 year old woman who had never seen a computer before, it is her life, completely. she won't let anyone in the family touch the machine, me included. and it sure is a good thing that it has not had a single serious maintenance issue since they bought it. best of all, since it only has one plug, they figure out how to plug it back in after they clean around it.

    is nextel's wireless plan. i don't know how they do it from the the wi-fi side, just found it yesterday. they have a pc card type 2 wi-modem that runs for 400 bucks or so and 55 bucks a month for unlimited 56k data connection.

    i can't decide if its worth the extra expense, since i have dsl at home and can live without the net if i gotta, when i gotta. however, does anyone think that that kind of cost could for that service would be enough for a dsl/phone replacement????
