  1. Not just cable. on Can Cable Really Be Slower Than 56K? · · Score: 2

Any network access can be oversold...cable or DSL. I have a friend who had GTE DSL and his ping time was over 500ms to his first hop at his ISP. I've had friends with saturated cable connections.

It all comes down to your ISP and/or telco not overselling the connection. My RoadRunner cable modem is as fast today as when it was installed, and we were one of the first few in our area to get it. So good service is out there!

Becuase it lets me, as an admin, standardize on one version. If the "base" Debian was in a constant state of update It would be much harder to build several systems over a span of time to be exactly alike. Sure, I could keep track of every package and make sure all new systems have the exact same version of everything (which most people do anyway), but it makes the install much easier.

Every time we have a TiVo article there are many people that say "Big deal, my vid card does TV in!!!". I always feel the need to write this post.

To those people: Go get a TiVo. The great thing about a TiVo isn't the fact it stores video on a hard disk. It's how wonderfully seamless the integration is to the rest of your system. I can't imagine watching TV without one now. My parents and my sister have them now and feel the same way. The interface is great and the featureset is almost everything you could want.

The price is right on target for a pre-built system that looks nice, works well, and isn't a hacked together PC sitting in my AV rack. There has also been a lot of work to hack these systems and make them even better. My main TiVo is an 87.5 hour unit.

And for the /. crowd, it also runs Linux and they have released some of their work back to the community and supported them in their hacking efforts.... except for the video formatting, but that has been broken.

Two years ago that was definately an option that most people added on to their system, but what about today when almost all new systems come with a CD-RW drive? Shouldn't that be in the OS now since almost everyone will want support? If Roxio wants to sell a CD writing app they need to make it better and easier to use than the included support.

Streaming media is now a common thing. Real had their chance to grab that market and failed due to their bloated impelementation. Is that Microsoft's fault? I don't think so.

I don't agree with the whole "bundling IE was a bad thing" argument. If Netscape had been better, we'd still be using it today even though it would be a seperate download. IE2 came with NT at the time and I didn't know ANYONE that used it. Everyone installed Netscape.

I'm also annoyed at the lack of some vendors support for AMD. I just ordered a new desktop for work. We use Compaq Deskpros. Not a single AMD system in all the Deskpro lines. The only way to get an AMD workstation from Compaq is to buy the Presario, which I won't do. I ended up getting a P4. :(

I wonder how long it will be like this in the server market even after AMD starts shipping the SMP chipsets. If Compaq doesn't put them in their good workstations, why would they put them in their servers? Give us our Athlons!
