I don't get it? Why is WalMart getting singled out for carrying these? I saw the same fake "Wiimotes" in KB Toys yesterday. I'm sure there are plenty of other stores carrying them.
Google needs a mascot to start pushing stuff like this. Gieko has the gecko, Linux has the penguin. Google should have something like a platypus maybe. Or a lemming. Something soft and furry to soften people's hearts.
Yes, but I would wager that a good share of those people that were running CRTs 5-7 years ago are still running CRTs at home. Most home users cannot justify the cost of a new monitor unless their old one dies. And CRTs are pretty reliable for the most part. And as others are pointing out, the CPUs are pulling 10x the wattage they were a few years ago along with video cards that require exotic cooling solutions and extra power wires. We are a gluttonous society.
You do realize that all of the issues you mentioned as being "no big deal" is exactly why it's unacceptable to most people. The fact that the video driver crashed MULTIPLE times attests to how unstable it is. The fact that it was able to recover gracefully is a plus, but I (and most people) would rather have something that is just stable to begin with. The software incompatibilities speak for themselves. Vista is not the complete re-write it was supposed to be...there is no excuse for such incompatibility in this sort of release. And further, do you realize that by turning off all those alert pop-ups you just disabled Vista's main line of defense against unauthorized access to your system?
You remind me of the soldier sitting in the pot of boiling oil telling his comrades "come on in, it's nice and warm!".
Microsoft WIRED Mice and Keyboards are pretty good. My first mouse was a Microsoft mouse and it lasted for a LONG time. Their wireless gear on the other hand sucks monkey ass. I have yet to touch a wireless microsoft mouse that didn't suffer from interference problems or render my system completely unusable (including locking up the wired keyboard) when the batteries got the slightest bit low. The one I bought for myself sits in a box even though it has the best resolution of all my mice. The conference room machine here at work is mostly useless because of the one attached to it. A friend has a wireless microsoft keyboard and has all sorts of issues with it too.
Sorry, I was a little off there. Actually it filters down to.1 microns or about 100 nanometers.
br?
From further reading...
200 nanometers will filter "many" viruses, 100 nanometers will filter "most" viruses and 25 nanometers filters "all viruses known to man". If his thing really works and doesn't clog up after the first couple liters then maybe he has something there...
$385 is a high price but not really out of line considering the expected lifetime of 4000 litres (about 1000 US Gallons). But somehow thinking this is a new product or technology is stupid. There are lots of products out there that already do this.
It goes way beyond nostalgia for me. Pascal(Delphi 8) apps are just plain way more efficient and stable most the time then.NET for doing the same thing. The ONLY reason I write C#.NET and VB.NET code is because our clients demand it. For most tasks, I could accomplish the same thing in 1/4 the coding time and produce a much more stable product that has a substantially smaller binary deliverable. Oh, and not to mention not needing to make sure a 80 or 100MB "framework" is installed on the box before you can run it! Delphi went into hibernation because Borland charged too much for it and then couldn't afford to keep updating it because people weren't buying. I haven't tried the new Delphi.NET, but I would imagine it's lost most of its advantages now being married to the cumbersome.NET framework.
Yeah, I looked into Vertica. Was pretty excited at first as my company does alot of data warehouse and data mart stuff. The potential performance gains were significant enough to start looking at converting alot of our reporting, ect to it. So I gave them a call and started asking some questions related to the key usage one would expect to make of a "warehouse" or datamark type of database.
1st Q: "Can you run MDX queries against the Vertica DB?" A: "No, we don't support MDX queries."
The conversation went downhill from there. At the time you could only get the DB as a limited beta and looking at their website it doesn't appear that has changed. Basically the DB is no where near ready for prime time. Even when it is ready, it's not going to make traditional RDBMS obsolete, just create a niche for itself in the warehouse/datamart corner. And I wouldn't be surprised if Microsoft came out with a new version of SQL server in short order (as well as others) that allowed you to create column oriented DB objects which would make maintaining two different database server technologies for the different purposes somewhat silly.
...And thus begins mankind's shooting itself in it's foot. With less land being used to grow FOOD, you will see more and more situations like the skyrocketing tortilla prices in Mexico and general famines around the world. I don't care to go into details right now, but the "global economy" is destroying our food supply.
Granted the cost will probably be a tad higher...but then you probably have >4x the processing power in a smaller package:) I think they went with the clunky mashed together with bolts setup because it looks "scientific".:)
Does anyone know the specifics of what sort of limitations the FCC will put on the 700Mhz spectrum? Will they be able to transmit up to 15miles? Up to 100,000 watts? Something like that? Who is to say that the G people will be able to convince everyone in the US to use their pipes?
I find your story explaining their side of it very thin. Downright anorexic even. What you speak of is called a "shared calendar". You don't need a database detailing individuals to keep track of events.
AMD's K-6 line kicked a little *ss for a time. Granted it was a short time but it still counts. The 2nd generation K6-II chips were faster then the P-II chips Intel had at the time. It wasn't till Intel came out with the P-III slot1 processors a few months later that they re-gained the performance lead (late '98, early '99 timeframe). The K6-III processors, while not clearly a leader, could outpace the competing P-IIIs in integer calcs for a time as well. Not saying that AMD was doing any "crushing" back then...just saying they were putting up some good competition already prior to the Athlon's introduction in mid-'99.
Its not really about capitalism per se, its about supply meeting demand. A global economy with huge demands that produce supply voids that must be filled somehow. You could say these "pirates" are practicing capitalism, but the underlying situation is just core basic economics. This happens regardless of the overall established market system (Black markets thrive in Socialist nations for the same reason).
The bottom line is Apple was very stupid to lock down with AT&T and only release in the US initially. Not only did that move piss off the multitude of people who despise AT&T (like me), but they opened up the door (and all the windows too) for clones and competition to get to not only the rest of the world first, but also half the domestic market that shuns AT&T. They still have a chance though...the Iphone clones are still in the pipe and they are working on the Iphone nano. If the Nano is quad band, unlocked, released worldwide, and in volume, they still have a chance to get the world by the gonads like they did with the Ipods.
Thanks for the list. After reading it I found that the only brand I currently use is K-Y. Tylenol once in a while but I usually use generics which are made by other companies. The K-Y can easily be replaced by an alternative brand product. Actually just about every brand's products on the list have either generic equivalents or major name brand competitors or both to choose from. I don't see the difficulty.
Well, if there is going to be a proliferation of "non-lethal weapons", I say we level the playing field by passing a law that removes any legal distinction between "lethal" and "non-lethal" weapons. Therefore, if I shoot someone with a "non-lethal" weapon, I am charged the same as if I had shot them with a conventional weapon. And if someone shoots at me with a "non-lethal" weapon, I can legally shoot back with a conventional weapon to defend myself. Thats fair right?
Now the kids will have something to keep them occupied during the times they can't access the internet to download their porn. Reference: http://hardware.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=07/07/21/1353241

You can't really. It's all Sun's fault. Javascript is what needs to be burned at the stake here.

Yes, This is why you should bring your own guns so everyone is equal. Worked for Neo.

Meh, you can get 16cores in 1U off the shelf. With built-in 20Gbps infiniband interconnect to boot.

But don't you mean "You discourage math!"?
Look at the bright side: At least you know what you are going to do tomorrow night:)
