  1. Re:The energy does not "go away" on The Speed Of Gravity Revealed · · Score: 1

I did some back-of-envelope calculations on what it would take to accelerate a small 10kg gong at the rate of one micrometer per second squared.

The result was 150,000 watts, and that doesn't take into account that the flash doesn't last a full second, or that your gong probably weighed much more.

The sound you heard was most likely one of two things:
Shockwave from heated air caused by the intense flash, or simply the sound of the flash's discharge causing the gong to resonnate slightly.
The sound-dampening you heard with the soot would be consistant with the soot absorbing the shockwave or sound.

Gongs are known for being extremely vibration-sensitive--you can stamp your feet on concrete and produce a noise from the gong. The sound energy from the flash going off produces more momentum on the gong than any amount of flashbulb light.

I was in an Outpost club on AOL way back when. We eagerly anticipated the complete patch, but it never came out. We got a 1.5 patch that added a few things, but the promised game was never released. A few years ago, Outpost 2 came out, which took the setting and turned it into a mediocre RTS game. One thing that puzzled me about Outpost was the start of the game. When choosing your planets, the best planet type you could get was Mars-like. Moon-type came next. So why not just send your colony ship to Mars?

The Nausicaa manga box set is the best $70 I've spent on anime-related goods, period. The art, the story, the characters, even the translation...just wonderful. If I had the money to fund them, I'd ask Miyazaki to make the complete Nausicaa anime. The movie was good, but a series of movies or OVAs that keep true to the manga would be excellent.

  4. Re:Because It Makes You Think on Sen To, X-Men 2 · · Score: 1

Most of Miyazaki's films tend to follow these lines. Mononoke, Nausicaa, Spirited Away... None of them actually have villians. There are characters with questionable motives, but no Disney-ish villians. Even the 'heros' are mere protagonists with problems and foibles of their own. Movies like Kiki and Totoro don't have anything resembling villian character or even a character with questionable motives. I can't think of a single Disney film that has these sorts of properties.

You kidding? Lain catching Alice masturbating is rather integral to the plot. Without that scene, you don't know why Alice is so angry with Lain, why Lain is so apologetic to her, why she changes everyone to make them forget, why she makes Alice forget her...
In other words, it's the basis for the entire conclusion of the series.
