That's not really true. Both NX and SGD translate RDP into a protocol their clients support. In the NX case, it eventually gets converted into X11.
And Tarantella was around way before RDP: It came out of Cambridge, England around the same time that VNC did.
Actually, Tarantella is the old Santa Cruz Operation. The Unix business was dying, so they sold it off to Caldera (who subsequently renamed themselves as The SCO Group).
None of the old SCO execs are still around at Tarantella though.
Well, speaking as someone who still works for Tarantella (and there aren't a lot of us left, but I digress), I can admit that we've talked about the impact of putting SCO on our resumes. Since Caldera can only call themselves 'The SCO Group' I've decided to use the old "Santa Cruz Operation" tag myself and hope that it doesn't attract the wrong sort of attention.
The project was called Monteray. Tarantella was completely different, and was all that the old SCO had left after jetisoning the Unix and Professional Services bits of the business to Caldera.
Hence the company name change to Tarantella.
Yes, you can publish individual applications in a rootless/seamless windows mode. There are some other enhancements to RDP too.
Actually, SGD translates native display protocols like RDP, X11, ICA etc. into AIP, so it's not just dumb proxying.

Tarantella's been around for years doing remote/ low bandwith X11 and is worth checking out too.
There's a list on the SlimDevices website, and there's also an alternative (GPL'd) audio server
