Squeezebox MP3 Player Hacked to Play Video

Xenna writes "The Squeezebox MP3 Player has found a new application: With the Videobox software and some cabling it becomes a networked Video Player. This is the latest development to come out of the active community Slim Devices have managed to attract around their very hackable MP3 players. Only last week the SoftSqueeze software player was announced on the Slim users mailing list. The Squeezebox was reviewed on Slashdot last December."

While this isn't as exiciting, it's still a nifty hack. One of the great things about the Squeezebox is that its form factor and UI enable it to integreate seamlessly into an existing AV system. Not only does it look like an AV component, but it acts like one too. The UI is simple and it's easy to control with the remote control.

Other hacks let you use the Squeezebox to check weather and stock quotes. If your PC is already connected to your computer and you have a Squeezebox, this hack lets you control your audio and video using one remote and the simple display provided by the Squeezebox. "Squeezebox" is a slang term for a small (usually octagonal or hexagonal) accordion. It has also been applied to a full size accordion at times. The definition at dictionary.reference.com simply states, "An accordion."

In light of this, it's easy to see why a squeezebox would be on her chest. Frequently, accordions (especially the bigger ones) would be supported by a strap worn around the neck (similar to a guitar) due to their size and weight coupled with the fact that your hands are not free to support the saggy center section.

Most accordion music is dance music, usually polka or creole styles. If "mama" plays the accordion all night and "daddy" dances to it, obviously, they're not going to be sleeping.

The music is just that... music... coming from the accordion.

Accordions can be quite loud, so the kids and even the neighbors might have trouble sleeping.

The motion necessary for getting sound from an accordion could be aptly described as "in and out." Additionally, the song says "She goes in and out," which seems a bit odd if they were describing sexual intercourse.

As for the "tease me" and "so in love" parts... all I can say is that maybe she's playing love songs to him.

Think of a poor, pre-industrial age family, here. It wouldn't be uncommon for this scene to play out from time to time. The kids don't have a Nintendo to play, so they dance, sing, play music, and find other ways of entertaining themselves for an evening. An accordion was a cheap (compared to something like a piano) instrument that even a poor family might have, and it was also a means of entertainment in an age where instantaneous entertainment wasn't really available.

Your explanation doesn't really seem to fit... unless you're just trying to find something sexual about the song.

How do you control the eyeHome from a (or multiple) remote location(s)? Because silly as it seems, that is usually a fairly hard problem to solve elegantly. Using a Wifi laptop/pda as an RC isn't bad but I prefer a Squeezebox personally.

The eyeHome sits next to the TV, comes with it's own IR remote control, and talks over ethernet to the Mac. It is basically an enhanced version of the Squeezebox (minus the front display) - The input jack is Cat5 - the Output jacks are various video and audio outputs. It relies on server software running on the Mac to serve the vaious files that it can consume (MPG, JPG, MP3, AAC, HTML) to it, just like the Sqzbx relies on server software on the PC or SliMP3 to serve the audio stream to it. So the eyeHome provides the mechanism for remote control as much a the Sqzbox is.

If you want DivX or XviD or tomorrows latest format you're out of luck. My solutions handles every codec available for WMP and could be fairly easily adapted for different players (RealMedia) or different platforms (OS/X).

This is definitely a point in favor of your solution that I hadn't considered. Because you have video being rendered on the PC, to handle a new format you only need to update the software on the PC. In order for eyeHome to handle a new format you would have to wait for ElGato to issue a firmware update (or not be issued and be SOL).

You need a box for every TV

The above comment was about the Pinnacle ShowCenter (thanks for the link BTW), but applies equally to the eyeTV. The counter point to this is that you could have multiple eyeHomes (or ShowCenters) hooked up to different TV's all watching different movies at the same time. Assuming of course your network and Mac can handle the bandwidth of serving the data. BTW You don't have to dedicate the Mac to the solution. It just has to be on the network, always on and have lots of storage, but you can still use the Mac itself as someone's computer. (I don't know how realistic this would be in actual use, however).

Also your statement is not quite true. Just as you added a TV modulator into your system to distribute the video for all the TVs. You could put a TV modulator at the output of the eyeTV or ShowCenter as well and end up with something close to your system (minus the format support).

Once you've done that, you run this software and it lets you browse and play your audio and video media.
