  1. Re:I used knoppix at bestbuy on Knoppix Tips and Tricks · · Score: 0

I disagree on that statement for one reason.... I work in retail and most of us are not on commission. I know for a fact that no one is at Best Buy, Staples.. and I Circuit City used to be, though I think they arent anymore. My point is waving cash in front of us isnt going to get us to risk being fired, nor do we really care. If someone asked me if they could run Knoppix on one of our laptops, I would say sure, but that is becuase I know what Knoppix is, and I know it wont mess anything up. The fact of the matter is most people in retail are stupid, their is no nicer way to put it. I have heard some of the funniest things in retail, like the celeron is the choice for gamers, and many other ridiculous comments. If retail stores don't plan on paying people in retail they will continue getting idiots, it is as simple as that. That is the reason I am out of there as soon as college is over, can't wait.

I have an Athlon XP 1700+ and my friend has a P4 2.8 w/ HT and the works one thing we have noticed is his is insanely slow to boot up. My machine is booted into windows waiting for me while he is just sitting their watching the bar go by. I am not sre what AMD has done, or maybe VIA on my motherboard, but my machine boots in a little under 20 seconds, I can live w/ that.

We plan on offering 250,000 dollars to anyone who FINDS a security exploit in windows and reports it to us without utilizing it. Oh wait they don't have enough money in the bank. Seriously though it is ridiculous now that people are forced to silently submit security exploits to windows for fear of being prosecuted. MS is just beating around the issue, trying to make themselves look like heros whenever they catch the bad guy.

I did read and I understand that fedora exists, but please be real, will a corporation use this? Red Hat had a name, people began to treat them seriously in the corporate world. Now that they are pulling support as a company this will get CTOs to begin to worry. Is this something that we want to begin to support on a desktops when support can be pulled just like that? Even worst, is this something that we want to support on our servers. Remember a company can't just magically switch their entire server line like your regular joe schmo can. I host a small web server off of SuSE 8.2 and apache 1.3, if SuSE pulled support on it today I would be fine. I could move very quickly to another machine. If I were to own 50 machines then it would take me a lot longer. I would want to use an OS that I know will be supported for at least 3 years, preferably longer. The point is, this is not good overall for the appearance of Linux. While yes it is good to the use. Explaining this to me is fine, but keep in mind I use linux daily on my desktop and my servers. I understand that its a far superior OS then the windows alternative. But explain this to a CTO, who thinks they know everything about technology, but in reality reads the news and over reacts.

No really this is not a good thing. I hope that SuSE, I mean SUSE doesnt follow the same route as Red Hat and abandon their desktop line. I have been using it on my desktop since 7.3 and have enjoyed every release.

I want it bad too. I ordered it when it was first announced. I can't tell you what SuSE, no I am sorry they are now SUSE, is doing but I can tell you what happened with me and 8.2. I ordered the upgrade, and they said it had one less manual. When I got it their was no difference at all, the manuals were all their and everything. Not once does it check for the disk. I can't tell you for sure that they are going to do that again, but maybe they are.

The Windows users are always blaming the fact that their are more Windows machines on why they have more viruses. I totally disagree with this statement and here is why. Unix stations power the internet. It is as simple as that. Wall Street is also powered by a bunch of unix stations. Military uses a lot of Solaris machines. Now I dont know about you but a lot of these organizations are prime tartgets. The reason is if a user gets a virus then it will only affect their home directory, or at least should on a good unix machine.
