I will take a stab at the reason. Civs tech tree is complicated and having some prior knowledge to what each does helps a lot. What will happen if I discover say masonry, I can build walls that makes sense. Many people have a basic understanding of history this helps immensly in understanding an already complex game. The units are the same thing. Most people relatively educated will understand that pikemen were designed to take down people on horses, so the fact that it has a bonus against horses in civ makes sense. Each technology does as one would expect in a game of civ, and each unit acts as one would expect from real world knowledge. The same can be said about the strategic resources. I discover oil and I instantly know that it is going to help power vehicles of some sort.

Concepts work the same as well. Missionaries spread religion, but why would I want to spread religion? In civ countries with the same religion as you like you more. You also get money from these countries. The wonders in the game for the most part are what the player would expect if they know anything of that time period.

The point is, prior knowledge helps take a significant edge off of the game. Imagine a game where you research something that is completely foreign to most players. Is a unicorn a good unit? What can I use to counter magic spells? What research should I go for when my options are mana power and fairy farming? The game would require a lot more figuring out of what is in the game to be playable. Most players would need to learn brand new concepts that the player has little to no prior knowledge of.

Civ is a complex game, no one would argue that. The fact that everything acts as the player expects helps take the learning curve very far down.

Another benefit is that players learn some history while playing.

To make matters worst, a lot of computers in a small area = heat (Especially when they are Prescotts... ehh). The other problem with their setup was they had some weird program installed that was like a game launcher and it prevented you from getting into the main Windows desktop. The launcher wasn't too bad, but I think that it made the games run like crap. The systems, at the time I went there were very high end, and yet on UT2004 they would get around 15-30 fps on low settings. I am not sure why as I had a "crappier" system and UT would never dip below 50 on high settings.

Anyway, make sure there is a decent amount of cooling in the building and make sure the games run alright.

The meat and potatoes of the DS is actually in the games. If Nintendo wants to do something like add handwriting recognition to the DS, all they need to do is update future games that will need that feature. They add it to their API and then it is only added if it is needed. The software that is included with the DS is pretty boring, it doesn't do a lot other than let you input your birthday and display a calender, there is not a lot you can do with that. I would like to see Nintendo change a few things with the DS, but I don't think it would be possible as I think it is too late to add the functionality. I wish that Nintendo had a buddy lists that displayed all the games you friends are playing. I also wish that friends codes were stored on the unit as opposed to on the game cartridge. This way it would be possible to find what game your friend is playing and insert the appropriate cartridge. This is coming from a huge Nintendo fan that sold his soul to get a DS lite (ok fine worked a few hours).

I rarely play the game after I beat HL2, but I have had at least two times where it won't play when it verifies my game.

I went to a lan party, this lan party didnt have the internet. When they wanted to play CS Source for some reason the two of us with a legal copy could not play the game, it needed to verify something with a server or something like that. I ended having to get a CRACKED copy off of someone, even though I legally own the game.

Their is also the problem that steam uses 20 megs of ram to run in the background, if you want to "autoupdate". While 20 megs isnt a ton for someone with 1 gig of RAM I dont want to see a day where Epic wants 20 megs, EA wants 20 megs, Blizzard.............. I wont have any memory left to USE my computer by the time all the companies are done.

Their are numerous problems with Steam and Steam like systems, they are a poor idea. When owners of the game are finding it easier to use cracked versions of a game, you know that their are issues with the system that they are using. And it is not just me that has had this problem, I have numerous friends that have had similiar problems.

Finally, you are correct HL2 was amazing, if it wasnt for Steam I would love it a lot more.

I have two things for you to think about that may possibly allow you to understand why Hell exists. First of all the Bible makes it very clear why we were created, God got bored and wanted toys. He also realized that boring toys that do whatever they are told are boring and he wanted to be loved, think a wind up toy with a button that you push saying I love you every time. Now making toys that have a mind of their own has a consequence, they must be given choice, and this choice means they may make a poor choice (look at real life if you don't believe me). Now free choice is a very important thing and quite frankly our lives would suck without that freedom of choice. But it also has a lot of consequences like Hell. So my point is that God cares for us, but he wants to give us freedom of choice, and he can't have both. Now for another food of thought on another line, what if God is not in control apart from outside this universe. We are never told whether or not God has rules to abide by in his own little universe, but I think he may (though these rules are obviously much broader than ours). What if God has no direct control of his angels, which I believe he may not as look at the fall of Satan. And what if the rules of the game are that you can try and win souls, but you cant steal one anothers souls. Now the first argument is clearly true and can be backed up by numerous verses and also makes sense you can't have humans who choose to love you and then only give them the choice to love you. The second one is off the wall and I always wondered it myself but I have no reason to believe it other then a thought I came up with. Now back to the topic I also think that this article doesn't prove macro evolution, which never has been proven. Micro evolution has time and time again. Most creationist will agree that this butterfly "anomaly" when the butterfly becomes a bird or a new species now you have something. http://www.creationscience.com/onlinebook/LifeScie nces.html

My problem w/ people outsourcing to foreign countries does not have to do with the fact that they are foreign. That is great that you have pepsi, coke, pizza hut whatever, but imagine if the associates were all Americans. You walk in and they speak broken Indian that is very hard to understand, and what makes it worst is that there is a ton of static when they talk to you. The pizza hut you go to I am sure has all Indians running it. Not only that their is probably a corporate office that allows Pizza hut to be more in touch with Indians. An American company is not just ran by Americans.

I don't think that outsourcing is inherently bad so long as the customer doesn't need to know the difference. Unfortuneately w/ outsourcing tech support this is far from the case. I am sick and tired of going to work at a large retailer where I work and having people call me for tech support for a product like a Dell computer or AOL (neither of which we carry) because they couldn't understand the person on the other line.

I once had an elderly lady come in almost in tears b/c she couldn't get her Dell computer working. She handed me an email from a guy in India that looked something like this:

"Sorry I havent goten back to u. I been sick. U wil ned to replace the motherbord. I snt u a pdf file detaling how to do it."

They wanted this older lady to replace a freaking motherboard. That is ridiculous, not to mention the english was horrible and the whole email was unprofessional. My problem with tech support is that they are having tech support agents supporting people in other countries. So many users that are non techies need to fight two language barriers, the language of the tech support agent and the technical jargon inherent with technology.

Hating outsourcing to tech support has nothing to do with racism, it has everything to do with the experiences that we in America, and probably other countries have had to deal with. I feel that many of these global companies need to support Indians in India, and American's in America. Not only this, they need to get better tech support reps regardless of the country.

The reason companies are outsourcing tech support first is simple. The customer doesn't deal with it until after they bought the product. I have to this day called a sales dept. of a company and gotten someone who I couldn't understand.

    1. People in different areas need different amounts of money to survive. I.E. my cousin lives in an affluent area right on the border of philly. McDonalds pays about 9 bucks an hour there... It is insane, until you see the price of food/gas/housing. I live about 2 hours from philly, McDonalds pays about $7 an hour. The point: If you live in a really low cost of living area, then $5.15 may be more then enough. And if McDonalds can't afford to pay their employees $5.15 an hour they will be forced to hire less employees, this is the whole supply and demand of labor concept.

While I understand that with the GPL you could charge for the "service (which is relatively cheap to software in comparison to physical products)". The cost of the service becomes very vague, and I feel that the ideas should be usable by both free and commercial developers.

But, on the other hand, their is defineately merit to your idea with the GPL. Your idea is to abolish the software patent when really good products are not being developed, the government will see the error in its ways. But the problem is, in order to license the actual product, you need to apply for a patent, which isn't free, far from it in fact.

By using a BSD style license I feel that it would not abolish the patent process but rather make it less relevant. If this website hosted hundreds if not thousands of ideas, that were vague, like patents are. Then prior art would become an issue when filing for patents. It would be a lot harder to apply for a patent on an idea that doesn't infringe on something from this database, of course this is assuming that the database got large enough.

That is just my 2 cents.

People could then comment on the ideas, come up with better ideas, etc. I don't agree with the GPL license idea, but would rather prefer something similiar to BSD, and yes I use Linux... I think that the GPL would be a little to restrictive on physical items, and how would you "open source" and idea, write it down on a napkin and scan it in? Just something along the lines of come up with an idea and people need to give you credit. Who knows, maybe it would be a great way for people to get hired. Imagine, a company likes an idea and hires that person to actually carry it out, doesn't sound too far off to me. I have the technical expertise to do it (probably, I am an amatuer web developer that is pretty comfortable w/ manipulating a databse.), but as of now haven't gotten the ambition to spear head a project myself, I would be interested in helping if I could get someone with a little more experience to help out.
