I have three machines home (4 with the Xbox) one is an iBook, one is an Ubuntu PC and the last is in the Ubuntu to Windows XP transition.
Now, I don't like to have to buy Windows, but I don't mind choosing to do so. (I might reconsider if I had to buy the retail and not the OEM)
Linux is about choice!
The biggest complain about the Linux desktop is its usability, Windows got the messy but working install and reboot process, Mac OS got the download and copy, and Linux got the what?\
Things like yum and apt would perfect, if they could get everything working, it means software and drivers alike, and commercial software too! Right now you can get a lot of really useful to useless apps from repositorie, but it doesn't make it useable, I can't get my tv card working without a lots of tweaking, even if it is Linux friendly, and I have yet to discover a simple solution to record. I will not even start with 3d or audio, because it is just a nightmare.
Yes Ubuntu works, yes you get Firefox, yes you get OpenOffice, yes you get Gaim, but what about the rest? Things like Opera, RealPlayer or Vlc are easy to install, but you still have to use the command line, and sorry Mr Developper, people don't want to do that, they want to download, double click, say yes and it works, one the Linux guy will get this figured, maybe we can see a big move.
Now whenever somebody talk about that, usability and things, the Linux crowd get in offensive defense, most of the time you get something like "well thing are done like this because that's the way the developper want it to be done".
Get something straight: Linux Desktop will work only if the User comes before the Developper. Because at the end of the day, to conquier the user desktop you have to work for the user, and not the other way arround.
Now company start to understand that, look at Ubuntu and Mandrake, but we are not there yet. When installing software will not rime with dependencies, when drivers will not rime with kernel recompile and make relagate to uber geek. But right now I will keep my Mac as main OS, because I have other things to think about than making my system works, you know, some of us do work with their computer, and not writing software.
Sorry for all the typos.
Well i think this is different sorry, buying an xbox is like buying a microwave or a stereo, you expect it to work all the time, as long as it is used as it should be.
Comparing a new Xbox to a Linux install is like comparing a new car with one where you upgrade the motor with a home made one not necessarily conform for the car and expect it to work as reliable as before...
Working on a Mac and a Linux PC, I would then be able to test my pages in IE 5+ without the need for wine, or any other trickery. I'll be first on the list to get one!
Believe me, I'm 100% for Open Source, but lets cut the bullshit, if an application is even only 5 times slower to do essentially the same task (which means exactly what it means) then I said you can't start blaming it on how the files from one are better compressed or the internal is in german or other things, it is just 5 times slower whatever you said. I'm not saying these are not valid explanation, I'm saying it is counter productive. Yes it's free, but that's not an excuse, Open Source is also about doing better software, not only cheaper ones!
You seem to forget that the Airbus stuff has its own little battle against the Boeing stuff...
Anyway I do not see why it is a problem for the US, what we call the Internet is just a standard of Inter connected Network, now historically it has its root in the US, but now non US network connect to it, and they could stand on their own. What would happen if it goes this way is that non us network will start to have their own Internet, no hard to to do, the only thong is that I wont be able to read Slashdot...
At least on the Mac OS X you can use a nice bit of software called growl to manage the distraction of IM amongst other computer feedback. Growl will connect with certain application such my IM client Adium and instead of popping up the Adium window, will display a transparent bubble in the corner of my screen with the content of the message, this bubble will be there for few second, enough to read it, and dissappear. The beauty of it is that it doesn't steal focus, so you can continue to do whatever your are doing. It is so effective to me because even so the first message is alway attracting my eyes, in a glance I know who wwant to speak about what, and I can either decide to stop and chat or continue to do whatever I am doing ignoring the following transparent bubble, it is just something i couldn't do without.
I use Opera for Mac regularly, but until today I never installed it on my Linux desktop where Firefox sit confortably.
While playing with Opera settings, after my free registration (thank you Opera), I realised that I could select Helvetica for the text of the GUI, however I do not have Helvetica on my system!? I then decided to try Hevetica on a web page, since Opera seems to have a font on his own, and surprinsigly, it worked, the font looks funny at big size, but it is Helvetica indeed, not a substitution like in Firefox. So I guess somehow Opera licenced a copy of Helvetica for its browser, with some others, and they can be used independantly of the system fonts (I still have to understand the funny look of it, it might come from static Qt)
To my knowledge, without paying for a licence, or "stealing" from my mac, there was no way to get Helvetica based web design on Linux, without nasty substitution, but now (well before, but now for mw) there is Opera.
When I see the reaction I get everytime I post on French Clubic.com on why people use Windows when they could do what they do free with Linux or other, I can tell you that some people are fanatic about Windows, if I'm not called troll I got something like "You bloody OpenSource freak, why would I not use Windows when it is free and I can get tons of warez game on it..."
Does using pirated Windows qualify?
Since the US doesn't allow export of strong encryption, people should't use any! right guys?
Seriously, why China gouvenement would buy American software anyway, they want control, and they have all the control they want with existing open source solution that they can enhanced themself, with nobody looking over their shoulder.
I would'nt like anyway my gouvenement to buy American software if open source alternative exist, my taxes are not suppose to pay american share holders!
I don't really care if people use linux, however, I really care if people use firefox, or open office for that matter.
The point is interoperability, let's face it, the Internet is what it is because we have a standard for web and email, and it works. On the other hand, we have word, non standard IE, MSN, which basicaly does the opposite of the Internet.
Open source allows standard and interoperability, that is why I care for some software, the others are just a matter of choice.
I use MacOS X, I use Linux, still I can get my open office files from one to another without any problem, and even work on it at the last time on the Windows from the pc labs at uni.
I can chat with my non techie friends on their windows laptops, they can browse my blog or photo gallery exactly how they are suppose to be seen without the need for me to know all the little dirty tricks to make IE behave himself.
I can do nice flyers for my house parties without spending hundreds for a software I use twice a month, and without having to pirate anything.
I can just try to do things!
In this world, they are two kinds of software, those who need to be open, and those who could be open.
It is important to have the first ones to communicate with each others, the second ones is a matter of lifestyle/money or expectations.
I mean, pdf is a free format, still Adobe is making load of money out of it, so why not do the same with flash? I mean I know part of flash is standardize, but they could open it and be the maintainer of THE solution for animation and multimedia online, becoming popular with most, while keeping their excellent IDE. I know a lot of people who would use Flash more if it was open more, evrybody's got flash after all, and flash can play almost everything, I use it to play mp3 online because it just make sense, no other plugin needed, and it stream, so please big giant, be nice to the little people, you got enough software there to make enough money, open the door and people will love you
Considering Linus was using BK to maintain Linux, on Linux, BM have to be using Linux right? for support and development.
So when they gave away there "free license", they are actually supporting their own business, aren't they?
So when they talk about cost, do they take in consideration that don't have to pay any lincenses for Linux, and that if there was no Linux in the first place, or a lesser quality Linux, it would affect their very own business????
I respect totally DVD jon, for the work he does, and concerning the DVD, as everybody compare this to it, DVD is the only format available, you have no choice, so DECSS is a tool to force DVD to be played in Linux, because nobody cares.
Concerning iTMS, I still see CDs in shops, and even LPs. If I see a Copy protected CDs, I don't buy it, I search for the LP, I think this is more powerful than just buying the CD and cracking the protection, because cracking the protection doesn't make it go away, while not buying can, if people really cared.
So just don't say your fooled, when you buy, you submit to a contract, if you don't like it just don't buy it, There is enough free music out there, non copy protected cd, and vinyl to make every minutes of every days of you life covered by music, so stop whining.
On the other hand, Apple should offer a client for Linux, or indicates that itunes is not free, but cost the price of a windows or mac os licence, because that is what it is, it is using a product to force you to choose another one in a pool of option (if you choose itunes, you have to choose mac os or windows, which is as such an abuse since it forces your choice to a more expensive alternative)
Coming from OSnews where some so called reviewer can't even manage to do simple configuration in Ubuntu that my little brother mange by himself, well I will say, go back to that KDE yo love that much, after all you don't have to use it if you don't like it
These are are Gnome, but seems statistacally the more hardware compatible in the test I did for my dissertation, they include all the basic stuff, firefox, openoffice, gaim and the gimp without overwhelming the user with too much choices as Knoppix will for instance
Thanks to the new realplayer in windows and its "play in realplayer" function, it is now easier than ever to record real stream to keep them. Just do that and Ctrl+I and you'll get the url for the stream and paste it streambox vcr...
Actually Real sued streambox for something that I regard as fair use, but the streambox vcr is still widely available on the net, and new and better alternative exists such as net transport, http://www.xi-soft.com/default.htm
Which will record real stream up to 10x faster than real time (maybe more with some tricks)
So Rob, is that fair use? because I think it is, at least as much as cracking Apple files! So will you do what you say and let people record strem this way without suing the people making it possible, or are you the only one to be allowed to do it?
Thanks I log into my old helix account and realise that your are actually program manager! Well thanks for this answer fronm the source and I hope it will get through. As I said I mainly listen mp3 and watch news, so for me realplayer would be just perfect, and it is also easy to install and get working, which is something really important for me(I study linux usability and stuff like this) mat
Whatever you may think about the company, real audio and video has been for me a way to enjoy good and free content for a long time. From BBC and French news report to on line concert streaming, I probably listened more than a real stream by day.
The release of the Linux player was a good thing, but I really miss two functionality, the "play in real player" which I use to play video full screen, and the play list with which RealPlayer would probably be my player of choice under Linux.
So my question is, how long until I get the same functions in Linux and in Windows?
I like it better than the last one, for me this is the true iMac with a flat screen.
Let's hope i will have enought money to buy it before they release the next one...those damn PCs are cheap!
This looked weird, so I googled it.
http://www.griffithobs.org/IPSBlueMoon.html
I wonder if I'll be able to see it given the fact that i am in Scotland an clouds are everywhere.
Then you sell a piece of code, not music!
The beauty of the system until now was that everything you buy would play on anything you bought (LP, tape, CDs) but then if we start to have x not playing on y it will be a terrible because if they start like this, then one track will be available from one shop only, and then to play it you'll have to buy the player supporting it... ridiculous, I think I will stick with analog from now on...
I personnaly think that M$ seeded its own fall with the xbox, and they made me switch definately to linux. Cheap hardware to play uptodate game without the need to worry about driver and so on, and... easy to hack.
Tell them that for less than £500 they can have a fully working PC, and an Xbox for the kids.
I have three machines home (4 with the Xbox) one is an iBook, one is an Ubuntu PC and the last is in the Ubuntu to Windows XP transition.
