I think this would work nicely, with a maximum amount of re-usage and a minimum energy loss, to get a "moon express ferry".

Just that the resolution of the framebuffer and the textures are two entierly different things. The framebuffer, even at 2048 x 1600 x 48 bit uses a ridiculous 18.75 MB per frame... out of 2GB? That's nothing. The rest of the memory gets used for textures, vertex data, normals, and so on... so you have to have color, normal, bump map, and specular reflection information, just for one texture. Then a mip map of everything. For large textures you can never have enough graphics memory as long as the chip can render the textures. Main RAM is useless for this. Just try an onboard graphics chip with memory sharing. Huge PITA. Shaders are not even worth mentioning in terms of graphics memory. Code is usually the tiniest part.
Main RAM on the other hand holds mainly the word data, sound files, textures that are preloaded but not used yet (think GTA) and other game data like model data used for game calculations.

Eventually they will try to survive in their own group, create a country on their own rules, and maybe turn up to become another Australia. Just always remember the basic rule, that humans do things *only* because they think it's right or because they are forced to do it. The first case happens when they genuinely believe it's the right thing because it makes sense. And the second one can be because their situation is so desolate that they think they have to do this (either by being forcey by another one, or by being forced by the own twisted ("twisted" by the horrible things that happened) mind. There are no "bad" guys. It's a matter of POV. Always. Period. The sooner you accept this, the sooner you can help them becoming happy (and maybe your friend) again.
Hmm... you know, I just read something about psychology, and this defense mechanism is one of the worst, leading to schizophrenia and living in an illusion. point 1-5 are starting to get drugs you use, as a replacement for the things you are missing deep inside of you.
The illusion is, that life is too good. In reality it isn't. But you would never allow yourself to accept this, because facing that reality (like: having allowed this cruelties to go on for such a losg time) is so painfully destroying your world, that you could not handle it. Believe me. I know too good what I'm talking about, and after 10 years it still hurts sometimes, to face it myself.
