  1. Re:However on Games Are Not Drugs · · Score: 1

I can vouch for this. One of my relatives is hopelessly addicted to WoW - he doesn't sleep and often forgets to eat because he's playing that stupid game.

He ignores his friends and family, who have in return given up on him, and neglects all responsibility except for work. Even then, he only gets a couple of hours of sleep a night, and is so exhausted that his mom has to do everything for him - she wakes him up, gets his clothes ready for him, gives him some food, and then drives him to work. He's even got a pillow and blanket in the car because he sleeps on the way there. And he's 22! How pitiful is that?

I'm not saying it's the game's fault (it's clearly his fault, and partially his mom's for babying him), but the game is addictive. He's not the only person I know who's stuck on it, but he's definitely the worst case I've seen.

  2. The list goes on... on Teenager Wins Email Suit Against City of Kokomo · · Score: 1

I grew up in Kokomo, but I've lived elsewhere on and off for the past couple of years. I clearly remember one week when I was living in Tucson, and this came on CNN Headline News:

City pays dog salary to chase ducks

There it is - my small Indiana hometown on national news...for having a dog on it's payroll. A few days later (after my friends stop laughing at me) I'm watching CNN again, and sure enough, my hometown has made 'headline' news twice in the same week:

Mysterious Hum Baffles Citizens and Experts

    That's right - the Kokomo Hum .

And now...our mayor has been defeated by a 16-year-old in a catfight over email addresses. Sweet land of abundance, thy doors have opened - cast away common sense and embrace thy true valor! Onward to inanity!

No kidding. This guy is kind of an ass:
Dr. Michio Kaku is an evangelizer for string theory. String theory postulates that time is one of the 10 dimensions of nature and that dimensions can be "compactified" or curled up into tiny little balls, so tiny, in fact, they can never be detected. The brains of string theorists can be described in a similar fashion.

Witty, but come on - who can take this guy seriously when he devotes the first twenty percent of his article to making fun of people and calling them morons?

Can you seriously be impressed by anything that doesn't measure up to my standards of technological wonder? 10. MMT Observatory - Amado, AZ on A Geek's Tour Of North America? · · Score: 0
    Hey, I work at the MMT Observatory (run jointly by the U of A and the Smithsonian) on Mt. Hopkins in Amado, AZ. A few interesting facts;

-The main lens is 6.5 meters (around 21 feet) across and cost in excess of $20 million to make. It is the largest active mirror in the continental US, as I believe the only larger mirror is the Keck in Hawaii.

-The mirror employs active optics, which is dozens of servos which sit beneath the glass and warp it in order to counter the light-altering effects of the atmosphere.

-The building surrounding the telescope is 5 stories and rotates independently of the scope itself (someone once parked too close to the building...imagine explaining to an insurance agent that a building hit your car)

The number of ingenius feats of engineering which have gone into this place is really staggering. Hope you'll come visit.

  12. Twisted logic on 'Virtual' Child Porn Act Ruled Unconstitutional · · Score: 0, Troll

Its pretty sad to see how a few of you guys here are applying a logical progression to a situation where it doesn't belong. I know a lot of you are engineers/nerds/geeks/whatever. I am too. Logic is important for some of the work we do. But its truly sad when you see someone misusing a logical progression to explain something away, to divide it into digestible steps which eventually lead to a huge perversion of the situation at hand. This is what I'm talking about (you'll notice that the root of the problem lies in the very first step): "People who want kiddie porn can't possibly ever be cured of this desire. "Therefore they must have kiddie porn. "Fake kiddie porn is not as bad as kiddie porn. because no real kids were used. "Fake kiddie porn is therefore better than the real stuff. "Fake kiddie porn, in fact, is ART, if you really think about it. "Due to its higher acceptability, giving fake kiddie porn to the addicts is thus better than giving them the real stuff. "Kiddie porn makes a bad situation better. "Therefore, fake kiddie porn is alright, and even necessary." Can't you step back and hear what you're saying? This is disgusting. Do I seriously need to explain WHY there is a problem with the idea that fake kiddie porn is alright or acceptable? You who talk like this are putting on logical blinders to the real world; politics, logic, and constitutionality roar through your mind, but you never stop for a moment to look straight at the facts and realize how truly heinous it is to defend the constitutionality of having virtual kiddie porn. Stop playing political mind games and come back to reality! There's a problem when you use step by step problem-solving algorithms to explain away the problems associated with social/emotional things like child pornography. A few of you guys need to get your heads out of your politically/logically overcharged butts and look at what you're actually saying. Before you reply to flame me, read this and see if this actually applies to you or not.
