    Despite not having read all of the responses to this article, I feel that I can add a new perspective to the ongoing discussion.

    Science has no business "consulting" with anyone on anything. Ethical considerations? Remember Hitler. His programs advanced our medical knowledge, although the experiments were usually fatal to the "volunteers". Ethics has no place mixing with science.


    This experiment can greatly expand our knowledge of how life works. If we end up creating the next Black Plague and killing 1,000,000,000 people -- maybe it was meant to happen. This world's too crowded as it is.

    I use Mandrake 6.1.


    The only reason Mandrake did not win is because they did not "dumb" down the installation process. It still requires a person to do a modicum of study and learning.

    The worst thing that could happen is that the RIAA forces Napster to 'cease and desist' from producing, updating, and destributing their program and shuts down Napster server.


    One solution would be to create an open-source program, similar to the ICQ, where a person logs on and issues a search for a song. All "TunezNet" users that are online at that moment and have that song in their database would be displayed.


    If the worst does come to pass, this is a quite workable solution.


    The foundation of this issue is one of control. The Internet cannot be controlled in its present form. Nor should it be.


    Its growth is determined in part by the developer of the network, and for the moment that is America. Everyone is familiar with the illogical behavior of our legislators as they pursue their personal agendas, as they are walked down the path of dimishing freedom by their corporate masters.


    There will come a time when people must decide if the gradual and continual reduction in personal liberties is an acceptable price to prevent Johnny from masturbating to downloaded porn.


    I have hope. Call me foolish, naive, dreaming, but I do have hope. Hope that someone with influence, somewhere, will begin acting intelligently, rationally, and with respect for life.

    I could not give a rat's ass about DVDA. CD is hear, CD is cheap, CD is becoming better all the time, CD is easy.

    If these new 140 GB CD using clear disks and flourescent data markers take off, we'll be able to fit almost any type of media onto a CD.

    You can't hear the differences between CD-Audio and DVD-Audio anyways unless you're a geek audiophile with $10,000 speakers. So who cares?

    Other than one bad problem with the install code, I'm quite happy with Caldera 2.3 and am going to be trying Mandrake 6.1 soon.

    The problem I found was at the end of the installation where you can play Tetris. If you leave the computer idle long enough for the screen to go blank, the installation process crashes and the monitor will never wake up.

    If you were in the Dallas area at the time of the Waco "Incident", you could watch video footage (on public access of course, no network would touch it) of the FBI breaking down the walls and changing into the compound with tanks shooting fire. The people inside only responded and did NOT incite violence in any way.

    There was no child molestation or drug manufacturing occurring. The government was angry that some people were living outside of its control, and so shut them down -- violently with the BATF.

    This was only a page in the book detailing how government sucks, is composed of crooks and thieves and murderers who are only interested in maintaining their position in power at any cost. They have left behind the campaign promises that allowed them to achieve the office they occupy.
