    Yes, we should have one provider. A "monopoly." After we finish on the phones and let Verizon Wireless, since they are biggest, dictate pricing nationwide and quash competition, we will let Microsoft dictate all software for the US.

    I don't see any problems with this, do you?

    Get TDMA+AMPS if you want to make a call anywhere.
    Get CDMA+AMPS for the same reason.

    How fucking hard is that? Don't get some shitty free phone that's GSM or CDMA only.

    I've had horrible luck with IDE drives -- even when I thought I was getting good ones. That whole "Nobody got fired for buying IBM" was really stretched when IBM came back and warned people about their lower-end, and extremely popular, IDE stuff.

    You make an excellent point. Rotate the drives enough to mitigate any chances of shit breaking, and have some N+1 redundancy built in. I like N+1. It sounds hip.

    If you have to ask, then my guess is that using cheap fucking flea market IDE drives in lieu of some truly Archival storage will fuck you in the end. IDE drives are shitty. Newer ones are even shittier. A hard disk isn't meant to last 10 years, and you'd be a fucking loon to think it would.

    Hell, unless it's some ultra common file type, like text, who the fuck says you'll be even able to open it? That shit will be packed tight in the most archival storage, (not on ghetto shit IDE) but what the fuck good will it be? Look in the non-archival slashdot archives for the archival storage story about the BBC -- their storage medium outlasted the computer they'd designed for it.

    Granted, that's stupid bullshit thinking on the part of the BBC, but don't fall in their footsteps. Get tapes. Good tapes. Lots of them. And a valut.

    I'll tell you why you've not heard discussion about this before: it's a Bad Fucking Idea.

    Here's the deal: a switch from IRIX to Linux doesn't mean a fucking thing. They've switched from one variant of Unix to another. What was gained in the end? A net gain overall for Unix of not a fucking thing. Zero.

    If they switched from Windows- or Mac-based machines, then this would be legit. Other than that it's meaningless in the sense of Linux is Taking Over.

    That's all fine and great that it makes for a good story, but if the point is to claim that somehow people are realizing the benefits of Unix-derived operating systems, then it means squat.

    The fucker was really cheap. Sub $100. It's got a few flaws, but you don't pay the Ass Rape premium on the SiS cards as you do on nVidia cards. I'm getting about 6800 in 3DMark2001. Bang for buck the thing is pretty good.

    Comparing a server OS (in 1981) and workstation OS to something written for puny, and comparatively inexpensive desktop machines for consumer use is soentirely bogus that it's a shame that I have to point this out.

    That's not valid. And reread it: the word "NEARLY" appears in the original, you've neglected to mention that. It was not an absolute statement for the very purpose of placating the frothing legions of fools. Unix, in the manner which you use it, is not a cohesive operating system, but rather a generic term used to describe operating systems with UNIX (tm) as their base.

    Incorporation or LLC formation has the benefit of shielding the founders and employees from personal liability from debt. Form a legit corporation, go bankrupt, and you still keep your personal house, car, etc... but business assets are gone, like in this case.

    It's not foolproof, as clever legal twats can find ways to pierce the corporate veil and collect personal assets for repayment of creditors; but in most cases true corporations that have a board of directors, keep acceptable records and the like generally have only the business assets repoed.
