    So why are Americans so hostile to Unions again?

    Because we've seen the dark side of unions. Eventually, they become an entity unto themselves. Creating agreements with management that benefits 'the Union', and not the workers.
    Oh, the workers may initially glean some benefit, but the union management becomes a parallel to the company management. Profit and control driven. And will do whatever it takes to increase the union profits, even to the point of driving the parent company into the ground.
    And as a side effect, driving quality down, by forcing the company to keep substandard workers.

    See the US auto industry for an example.

    A private company at the local airport has several ex-military jets. A-4, Kfir, Hawker Hunters. They contract out to the Navy and USAF to fly adversary DACT and tow targets.

    But heck, all that wondering and our household's only been using about 50 gigs a month, according to the meter.

    I was wondering the same...exactly how much WAS I using (I'm on Cox cable with a similar 250gb cap). Turns out about my max use is about 25G per week (reported via the untangle firewall box). Several Netflix movies, multiple pcs worth of updates, lots of YouTube, torrents, etc.
    To more than double our monthly usage would be rather hard. I'd have to make a dedicated effort to exceed 250Gb in a 30 day span.

    At some crappy resolution, sure. In high-def terms, that's more like 25 high def movies.

    In other words, a hidef movie almost every day. How many movies do you watch?
    yes, I realize that its not just movies, but also TV, etc. But it is actually quite a lot for the average persons current useage

    The biggest budget deficits ever were under Bush and Regan.

    The biggest deficits are when we have the presidency and congress controlled by the same party. Doesn't matter which one.
    Like under Reagan, most of Bush the Lesser, and now.

    But even the big articles are mind-boggling, like the bizarre concept, quite seriously researched apparently, of using a separate "pusher" plane to get heavy bombers into the air (instantly made pointless as soon as jets started to improve even slightly, and never mind how many accidents it would have caused in practice).

    And 50 years later, we have Mothership Eve and SpaceShipOne.

    Don't know if its any better now, but 2-3 years ago when I tried to torrent it, it was literally 4 weeks to get all the bits.

    My son has that exact same one. Bought in August. It's in for a new HD right now.
    The GeekSquad dude was surprisingly non-pushy about extra services and crap. When he asked about backups and reinstallation, "Nope, I just need a functioning hard drive". 'OK, come back Tuesday'.

    Or you could run them through the ceiling/under the floor.

    If this weren't a rental house, I would. Yes, there are myriad ways of getting a signal fom here to there. Beaming a TV signal around the house wireless is but another option. One that could come in quite handy in certain situations.
    Just like 802.11 complements wired ethernet.

    Why not just watch on the monitor of the PC, or use a projector?

    I would use this. In my current set up, we have TV/Tivo/cable box on one side of the room, and projector/PC on the other side of the room. PC plays movies and Netflix on the projector, and Tivo/cable on either the TV or projector.
    Because there are two viewing devices on opposite sides of the room, somewhere there will be a long-ass cable involved. Currently, a 50' S-video cable from the Tivo to the projector.

    Me too.

    Same here ('74 drinks more!). I got my first "PC" as a hand-me-down from my ubergeek dad (when I was 26ish)...a VIC-20 (which I still have and it still works).

    My kids (and obviously grandkids) have never lived in a house without a PC/gaming thing of some sort.

    Funny Radio Shack story - stopped into the local store a few years ago to pick up some random connectors, etc. Before offering to help me find what I needed, was offered a cell phone and then informed that they have to special order everything on my list. I asked them what they DO offer and was basically told cell phones and a few cables.

    Similar. A few years ago (03/04) I bought a gumstick size vid camera. It came with a 110v wallwart. Wanting to use it mobile/helmetcam, I set about to build a battery pack for it. Camcorder in the backpack, gumstick feeding into it.

    At RadioShack, I showed the guy both ends..."I need to mate X + Y".
    'We don't have anything like that'
    "yes you do, this is RadioShack!"

    He walked off looking confused. I rooted around in the bins for a few minutes, and found the connector I needed.

    As I paid the $2.50, he asked me if I needed a new cellphone and associated plan. [facepalm]

    Doesn't need a majority. You misunderstand people and vindictiveness. Given ease of information mining, some idiot will single out some other person, just because.

    Just because I have the solid or arrow green, doesn't mean I don't take 0.5 seconds to check for other traffic before I go.

    Pulling off from a red turning green, very true. But, if you already have the green, and have had the green for several seconds (200 yards or so), you're not going to come to an almost stop in moving traffic. You continue along.

    No idea if that is what happened here, but no, you don't always stop at an intersection when its green. And if you do, you will get smacked from behind.

    I got run over many years ago o my bike. Green...had been green as I approached...drunk idiot on the cross street to my right couldn't be bothered to wait anymore at the red, and decided to take off. As I was entering the intersection. Literally no room to stop. I slid, t-boned him between the wheelwell and the drivers door, and fell off. As I lay there in te street, he left.
    knock on wood, I got no real injuries from it. He got a small fine, drunk school, and probation.

    No matter how careful you are, sometimes the idiot just jumps out and bites you.

    Here's one possibility:
    2 facing left turn green arrows. Traffic coming towards you is turning left, and you are supposed to turn left. However, you have no intention of turning left, but instead want to go straight.
    You have a green circle, and proceed through the intersection. Poof...crash into the left turning driver that should not (according to the signal you think you see) be there. As you should not be in HER way, according to the green arrow SHE has.

    Of course, intervening traffic always takes precedence over whatever the light is doing. But not impossible to visualize what happened here.

    That would be impossible if the green arrow is arrow shaped; you can mask off parts of a circle to make an arrow or a bar but not the other way round.

    You can, however, diffuse an arrow shape to appear to be 'not a distinct arrow', but rather a fuzzy green circle.

    Oh, I thought the law was clear - when the signals are obscured or not working, stop at the intersection and then proceed as per a normal crossroads.

    In the Illinois case, the green arrow was obscured just enough to appear to be a full green.

    Oh please. People in the west have been building experimental aircraft like this for decades.

    What about the other 150+ countries on the planet that are not US or China? Does the FAA rule them as well? No. The laws of physics do. Aircraft designs are the way they are because that's what works.

    Instead of some new design, Chinese airlines buy the same old boring designs from Boeing, Airbus, and Aeroflot, because that's what works.

    A brazillion different designs for small A/C have been tried, especially in the unlimited $$ military regime. And yet they still come back to the same basic format. Because that's what works.

    But you go ahead. Bash the US some more. Or, you could come up with something new. Something different that actually works. I won't hold my breath.

    Because we already have high speed travel between just about every place you would put a high speed train. Have had for decades.
