    I see what you're saying. BUT...what are you really going to host there? IM your friends so they can d/l some files? OK...give them the pw and off the go. Either they are really good friends, or you change your pw regularly. Or host nothing of real value there. Nothing lasting that couldn't be emailed quickly.

    A general 'personal net drive' doesn't seem, to me, to hold much value over other, more targeted storage/hosting services.

    I guess time will tell as to what people may use these services for. The initial usage concepts rarely last beyond the intial launch.

    They're not yelling "OMG It's been done before", but rather "This was a dumb idea the FIRST time (xDrive). And no less dumb now."

    a virtual hard drive for storing hosted personal data is worse than useless. A 'small' personal drive, full of personal data, that you can no longer control.

    Too small for much music or video. Not secure enough for really personal data. Too slow for everything.

    Ok...maybe...if you frequently access from a public machine or something...maybe you'd keep your current links there or something. But other than that, what are you REALLY gonna use it for? What personal data will YOU put up there?

    rather than syncing your files directly, encrypt the hell out of them and just upload / sync the resulting files.

    But why bother?
    How much space will they actually give you? 2GB? BFD. With HD's today, an extra 2GB is less than trivial.

    You'd only use this as a 'backup' for files you deem critical. And those files are precisely the ones you do NOT want under someone else's control. Go buy a 2GB flash drive, and use that.

    running your own e-mail server must be banned, unless you pay extra for a commercial account.

    That doesn't seem to be the case in China, though. There, it appears that it is simply banned .

    Let's not go overboard with the fanboyism. A car is mainly a mechanical device. Theft = cutting the battery cable, dragging it onto a flatbed and driving away. No amount of code (Linux or not) can prevent that.

    Mainly social engineering. Without it, not much can be done.
    With it, and maybe a name or birthdate...one could get an actual, official SSN card. With that, you can get a drivers license, with YOUR picture on it. After that, the world is your oyster.

    Or, with the SSN and address/name, you can apply for a credit card. Spend all you want, and blow off the bills.

    It's not just the number...it's the number + name or address or birthdate.

    (Caveat: For those of you with home systems with XP Home Edition, this virtual server doesn't come free -- you'll need to flip for the $100 XP Professional upgrade.)

    People running XP Home generally aren't worried about running virtual servers. Or if they are, it's on a general house/kid PC, not the main box.

    'Causing mayhem' is entirely incorrect, if it is not for the right reasons. What the G8 and World Bank do may well be 'bad'. Or it may not be. But do the 'useful fools' who are protesting really know? I doubt it.

    I think selling facebook would be a huge mistake.

    For the longterm future of Facebook and it's users, maybe. For the current owners? Please. Their biggest mistake would be NOT selling it. $750M (or more) split between a couple of college guys? Take the money and run, dudes. You will probably never, ever have a chance like this again. Even this one may be fleeting.

    'Admittedly'? That's like 'admitting' a Ford F-150 is 'smaller' than a fully loaded semi.
    FYI, a B-25 is smaller and lighter than an F-15.

    Eating enough to fail the physical requirements (ie. to be sufficiently over-weight) would seem to be a fairly innocuous way to get out of the military.

    Actually no. I've known a couple of people who have done exactly that, and it was a long, PITA process.
    For someone thats relatively young and in somewhat good shape to begin with, it is HARD to eat

    It's not like you can sit around all day and do nothing but eat. You still have to go to work each day and do whatever your job is, and also the required daily/weekly PT.

    Seems to me that a lot of this could be avoided if the cockpit instrumentation was shielded properly.

    And a significant number of currently fying aircraft were designed and built before such devices became popular.

    The same thing existed at AOL 10 years ago. Along with your email address, whether you liked it or not. Along with being able to watch them interact in a chat room (albeit sligtly less anonymously).

    This is not new.

    One good thing about AOL, though...there are quite rigid parental controls, if you use them.

    Doesn't seem to be far fetched here. Usually, like all of you, think it's being hyped to generate news. But in this case it is very, very real. Just ask her family.

    And this doesn't happen if people were to meet in a bar? MySpace is not the cause, merely (another) conduit.

    The guy is the problem, not MySpace.

    This is merely the news outlets generating income for themselves. They have to keep the scare machine up and running, lest we forget how irrelevant they are.

    I think they have a quota. At least one station in every market MUST show the viewers/readers a way that the new society is 'bad' at least once a day.
    Once a week, they all have to get together and show us the SAME story on some way that we can be kidnapped or killed.

    "Dangers lurking in your sink! Details at 11!"

    Now...back to the story at hand. Are some kids being fools on MySpace? Sure there are. These same kids would be fools anywhere. MySpace is just one outlet for them.

    Let us hope that Steamboat Springs will share some of their experiences and applications with other cities, as the CIO for Newport News, VA suggested 2 years ago.

    A SourceForge repository for municipal applications would be great.

    I (used to) love eMusic. Have probably a couple thousand tracks from there. But evidently, it does not meet the needs of the majority of owners/creators, because they are not on board.
