You think that a news release covering a article in Science isn't going to be dumbed down? Or that Dr.Shou-Cheng has managed to fool Stanford, Santa Barbara, and IBM with his slick descriptions of 'imagine a planet orbiting around the sun'.
Or possibly you have a better explanation of quantum spin that will eludicate the masses in 30 words or less?
Another aproach is simply to try to figure out exactly what went wrong, and recalibrate. For instance, in the failed instrument they might have a sample of known copisition. Reading this might give them enough data to 'fix' the thing by massaging data returned from it.
In several of your posts you've mentioned that you don't think the tech exists to do these nasty things. Of course it does, or will soon. There is absolutly no reason why one couldn't build a scanner that could read a RFID tag from, say, 50 meters away. See the AIM site. The recive distance only depends on the sensitivity of the reciver.
Dealing with filtering and sorting the data recived by these devices would be trivial, databases are being designed and built all the time that handles this level of data.
I'm not saying that we should all being making tin foil hats, but the technological limits arn't going to be what stops this be a potential invasion of privacy.
Hmmm, let's see, my Ipaq has Apache, ssh, Grass5, and python on it. I wrote some code (in Python) to interface it with a gps. I can use it to admin unix servers, and even use its X display to interface with a servers GUI. All of this works at a decent enough speed.
I really like the fact that I can do this. I can't do any of this on some propietary system.
It's interesting that the link to Barnes & Noble was posted with Roblimos user ID, so that anyone actually buying the book is putting money in his pocket. Way to milk the bucks, Slashdot editors!!! Uhhh.. any concept of journalistic integrity floating around there???
Did the person who modded this 'interesting' mean;
a)"Interesting aplication of a text processing script on a slashdot story, possibly a Markov algorithim"
or...
b)"Dude, like, cool!"
Why the hell do people mod comments connected to ASCII trolls? No one will see them anyway, except for the people who've selected to mod up threads if comments are highly rated. So, to those idiots with mod points,; DON'T MOD THIS UP!!!
That is, if you like making your own widgits.
Well, seeing as Guinness is no longer made in Ireland, it's a bit of a moot point.
I hope I'm not the only one who realizes you're not joking.
Well, there is Americium, after all.
Still, I'd much rather be running an open source FTP server than some of those weak Windows versions.

Flamebait!? Moderators are on crack. It amazes me how dumb some people are. It's someones opinion, you idiots!

No. That's a link to the comment.
I think you're looking for point-of-sale system (POS), or possibly cash register, but I can't see many of those running Windows.
I don't think the U.S navy is too concerned about the price difference between Sun and Apple hardware.

Dude! Are you, like, high? Or are you trying to prove Mr.Original Posters point that there are some books out there that shouldn't be in print?
p.s. Your opinions would matter more if you had the guts to log in, loser.
Just incase you managed to miss the loud 'boom', the fire, the screaming people, the dead, the falling buildings, etc.
Didn't pay too much attention in high school, did you smarty pants?

If b, you might find this interesting also.
My eardrums are already damaged, you insensitive clod. I need to be able to turn it up.
Hmmm. Good point, but the solution is to have the comiler impose a naming convention, which no C porgrammer is going to swallow.
Yes, Hungarian sucks, but using a 'p' prefix to indicate a pointer is not Hungarian, but good practice. It will save you much effort when writing C.
My point still stands, though. You're going to see it anyway.
I guess I should have said 'DON'T MOD THIS AT ALL!!', man people are idiots.
