  1. In Soviet Russia the Computer Programs You! on Harvard Open Source Courseware · · Score: 1

eLearning is one of the big, empty busswords. As an Austrian University student, I did not have to pay tuitions for a long time and when I finally had to, I realized one thing: If I pay for classes, I want *more* service.

I know it depends on how the eClassroom thing works, but personally I prefer sitting in a class and listening to a lecture rather than watching a video of it. Though there are advantages, such as having material when the teacher makes mistakes and all, but still...

As for the coursware shown here, well if it really is that "community portal" they claim it to be, then it can very well be a good adition to current classes, but certainly not a replacement.

There was no such law. Resellers were dropping the XBox price and MS forced them up to the suggested retail price. Here is what happened:

At the launch day the big chains dropped the price from 479 Euro (419.63 US) to 399 Euro (349.52 US) for two days, which resulted in utter chaos, because smaller resellers were unable to go that low. (and most of them bought their boxes from the bigger chains - "Media Markt" and "Saturn" - for reselling) The price went up again soon after that though.

Here's the numbers from MCV-online [German]:

Germany - 10.000 units in the first three days (compared to this, the PS2 sold 70.000 units in Germany after two days when it was launched in November 2001)

France - less than 10.000 units in the first three day.

Great Britain - 48.000 units, the best results in Europe.

Microsoft only verified the numbers for GB, but the method for surveying them was the same in all three countries.

  5. EU prices on Xbox Price Drops For Australia And Europe · · Score: 1

From 479 Euro (two days ago) to 299 Euro again. There was a drop to 399 Euro at the launch but the price was at 479 Euro a day after that. I heard rumor that people who bought an XBox this week in Europe for 479 get a free controller and two free games, but I couldnt find any confirmation on that.

Well thankfully microsoft's marketing department is too big to coordinate campaigns like that and while one part makes ads that say "unix sucks" they also promote their ties to apple... Either that, or they didnt realize that Mac OS X is Unix based...

I am assuming that you are competent with *nix and nt, so installing a keystroke sniffer or VNC wouldn't go unnoticed. This works for offices with people who don't care what you are doing...

Now, to avoid those pesky little spyware, you can always bring your laptop to work. (best some exotic, like an iBook running MacOSX) From there, you can usually hook it up to the company network - ask your system admin before you do though and be so kind to find out his or her birthday and send him a card or give him a present, a long time before you ask :)

Now, being allowed to run your laptop on the company network either use SSH to connect to your home computer like another post suggested (btw, ssh does not HAVE to run at port 22 and some port on the network is likely not to be blocked). Or you can always use your favorite instant message client with SSH tunneling, or if you want to be extremely cool, you can use something like KDX which has a secure connection built in. Or you could use HXD...

As long as you are just a bit careful about what you do and dont start slacking at work, I doubt anyone will object to you being logged into an IM thing anyway.

  8. The NYT on Privacy Policies Heading Downhill · · Score: 1

I like the NYT online service and was using it for over a year now... Actually more like two I think. The point is that I registered once, only needing to enter my email addy (I did enter my name, but that was optional - they did not ask for my street address). Since then I got 1 email from the NYT [unique addy used for registering there and nowhere else] and that was a reply to a question I asked their help desk. I regsitered to Yahoo with another addy about 6 months ago and didn't want any "information services" from them. I got 3 unasked emails from yahoo in my inbox since then... Make up your own there... Besides I respect the NYT since I have been reading the print version for like... uhm forever. (they have a reputation which could damage sales of the print media - they cant afford to fuck up like yahoo)
