  1. pack behavior on Genetically Engineered "Smart" Mice · · Score: 1

Of course we got where we are by helping each other...but if you're going to use the pack animal analogy, I would like to point out that packs will often abandon or even kill their own injured/retarded/sick members.
Not saying we should go shoot all of Jerry's Kids or anything, but I do agree we could stand a bit of herd-thinning.

Christians don't believe in Karma...but from the tone of your posts, I don't believe you're a real Christian.
Oh wait, you did say follower of the Word, not of the true teachings of the prophet Jesus...my bad. The King James Word was written by Shakespeare. Beautiful poetry, that.

  3. Premonition or just bad cheese? on Jackson Sends Microsoft Case To Supreme Court · · Score: 1

I am anxious to know how the Supreme Court handles this...because the other night I dreamt of Bill Gates.

A fellow Linux geek and I infiltrated the headquarters at Redmond under guise of journalists in the hopes that we could uncover some dirt on M$. Once inside, though, we saw happy workers with PDAs and laptops, and clean, ergonomically sound work environments. When Bill came into a room (dressed very suspisciously like Mr. Rogers) everyone would gather around him like he was Jesus passing out fishes or something. My friend and I were flabbergasted. He was so humble and really seemed to care for the well-being of his company.

I wonder if that was a premonition, or just a piece of bad cheese before bed...

  4. Re:The REAL problem... on Lessig On DMCA, Adobe, The US Constitution And Fair Use · · Score: 2

It's not Capitalism that's to blame, it's our overly-zealous greed coupled with media whoring. People don't need SUV's but hey, that's what all the cool kids are driving. If folks were not so materialistic, if all the Religious Right actually LIVED peaceful and generous lives, if we weren't so sucked in by the flash and splash on television, and yes, if the government was taken back by the people, away from corporations with twisted agendas, America could really be cool.
I rambled a bit there but the point I'm trying to make is that we may be a bit f*cked up at the moment, but I believe we'd do better fixing what we've got than trying to switch over to a socialist/facist/whatever system.
By the way, Dolfy, what'd you think of "Schindler's List"? ;-)

  5. " One man's porn is another man's art. " on Software That Can Censor 'Sexual Images.' Or Not. · · Score: 1

    Very true.
The major problem I have with the censorship of sex-related stuff on the web is that quite often, the kids know more than the parents anyway. At least, they know what they hear from their peers. If parents were more responsible about providing their kids with accurate and honest information about sex, (and that includes EVERYTHING from puberty to masturbation to homosexuality) then kids would be less curious about 'that forbidden sex stuff online' and more likely to correct their friends' ignorance. Wouldn't it be great to know that when your 16 year old daughter goes out with her boyfriend, she knows all about STDs and date rape and contraception? The 'Bible thumpers' are only endangering their children by keeping them in the Dark.
    Sorry for the rant... :-)

  11. Good point. on The Digital Revolution - Living up to the Hype? · · Score: 1

I know that in the places I have worked there has been a marked tendancy for employees to fiddle with their computers rather than actually using them for productive purposes.

This is why the ISP I worked for last year sold a lawyer's office an entire Linux solution. They had their LAN, they had Word Perfect, but they had no Windows machines, so the secretaries couldn't load virus-ridden screensavers anymore.
Productivity needn't be sacrificed to the Digital Revolution, it just takes some creativity. You don't need firewalls and watchdogs and email filters, you just need to give the un-savvy something they can't understand. Perhaps that's a bit elitist of me, but if you are really worried about employees wasting time (or in our customer's case, virus attacks killing the machines), then you won't lose too much sleep over the fact that Jenny and the office girls can't put pictures of their cats on their monitors anymore.

My former employer bought Photoshop 5 on ebay (I know, I know, DUH) and when we received it, we saw it was very definitely a copy. So he called Adobe and tried to report it. They did nothing. ??? Apparently they're not too worried about piracy, just initial sales, which is what this leak may have hurt.

  16. Ego and fear. on Plasma Propulsion Could Cut Time To Mars in Half · · Score: 1

why are we so intent on outsurviving the Earth's willingness to let us live here?
My guess is that 1- people don't like to think that all our evolutionary gene-jockeying will ultimately be for naught and 2- we're thinking about how un-fun it would be to watch the end of the planet/solar system/galaxy/universe, and so turn to sci-fi and NASA to find a way to run away, even if we only prolong the inevitable.
Don't get me wrong, though, I'm with the explorers on this one. I'd loooove to go to Mars, or anywhere else for that matter...anybody read "Fountains of Paradise"? I don't think it's too far-fetched that we'll inhabit other planets eventually. The question is, are we going to become the locusts of the universe, gobbling up resources and then moving on? We're doing a good job of that here...
