  1. true content vs. commercialism on Is the Internet Becoming Unsearchable? · · Score: 1

Another thing the search engines could do is figure out how to ignore "trolling" pages. i.e. those which are nothing but index spam, a catchy title, and a refresh tag to ship your browser off to fetch their actual main page
Right on! Nothing burns me more than to see the 'enter here' page when I go to a site. Some flash or other animation or some huge graphic that loads up, and then either sits there, forcing you to 'click to enter' or redirects you to the rest of the site, which is where I wanted to be in the first place...what purpose does that serve? Oh, sorry, it impressed the client you built the page for. (I will admit I have done this once or twice, but not until after trying to talk them out of it.)

As far as searches, I agree that we need a new standard, one that is not only intelligent and dynamic, but that can outwit those who try to trick it. I believe that's quite a way off... until then I'll keep reading /. and Search Engine Watch.

They now make cell phones that have a headset that plugs into the base unit. There's no need to keep the antenna next to your brain.

Yeah, okay I dig, but the whole purpose of having a cell phone is so that you can be MOBILE, right? (Maybe I'm missing something, I don't own one, and really don't want to.) Carrying around a base unit doesn't sound like an alternative many people would jump on...

Also, my two cents about teens with cell phones - it has been my experience that they are used 99% of the time for calling their friends, who may be no further away than the next room. It's a toy. Sigh...and I thought my remote control Barbie Corvette was cool...

  10. makes me sick (not a flame) on Genetically Engineered Children · · Score: 1

Not to pick on you specifically - this is a general rant.

Basically we've already decided that it's okay to modify ourselves and our children. How far it goes will be the question...

    Who's we?

I don't have kids, but if I did, there's no way in hell I would let my daughter get breast implants or my son get a nose job. It all comes down to vanity. Now when you start playing with genes, saying, 'I want my kid to be good at math' that bothers me, too, because I believe that we are who we are for a reason. Whatever hardships we have change us, make us stronger...and if they kill us, well, that's Nature's Way of thinning the herd. People who spend thousands of dollars trying to have kids piss me off. You don't have such special 'genes' that you can't adopt some kid who needs a home and give them your precious family name.

Sheesh, I got a little hot under the collar there. I guess I just feel that humans are so presumptuous, we think we know best in all situations...we don't.

I'll end with a quote from the Animaniacs:
"It's a great big Universe, and we're all really puny -

For the children: I agree with Hard_Code, it is up to the parents to monitor what their kids do, not the game industry, not the schools, not the government, ad infinitum...
I often point out the medical 'fact' (can't remember where I heard this, maybe it's an urban myth) that the chemical/hormonal soup in kids prior to age 9-13 is equivalent to an adult on acid. If you watch kids play, thinking, 'hey, they're tripping!', it makes perfect sense. :-) But I digress...

My question for the Guru: I consider myself a pretty savvy chick - I played Q3 test on a Linux machine, I know, no big deal for most of the guys on /. :-)
Has it been your experience that the types of women/girls who play games like Quake are generally more knowledgable about computers? I would certainly (but humbly) place myself higher on the tech ladder than a doughy secretary who thinks the ultimate computer game is Solitaire...

I agree in a sense with this, but only as relates to mindless dogma. The big sham sects will fade out, but not without a fight. I remember a trial in Mississippi where a woman complained about the public school having morning prayer over the intercom, and the religious freaks in the town used a rally cry of 'religious freedom' to defend themselves. !?!

I am all for the scrutinistic dissection of religions, but to say that ALL religion will fade away, no, I don't think so. Look at the rise in Goddess worship and earth-centered religions. I would say let Pagans inherit the earth, they'll certainly take better care of it. :-)

I will wholeheartedly agree that dialog in Star Wars TPM was a sugary Disney-feeling made-my-skin-crawl experience. Having a 9-year old and a cartoon as main characters didn't help much.
