    Amen!

This episode made me laugh, and it made me cry... I knew that the bungled geek-talk would piss off all /.ers but at the same time figured seeing Scully mow down the baddies might make up for it...

...especially at the end when her head was pasted on the hot girlie body. ;-)

But seriously, I agree with the lot of you that they could possibly have handled this issue better. Like maybe doing better research. Anybody think this show hurt/helped the FPS image? (Or are the only people who watch the X-Files already gamers anyway?)

  5. From the musician's POV on Copyrights Need New Business Models · · Score: 1

If musicians stopped feeling like they need to be on MTV, and started committing to a DIY set-up, then the big labels really would be in trouble.

I can't speak for Brittany Spears, but I don't WANT to be on MTV. Have you looked at it lately? Where the hell is Downtown Julie Brown?!
I have a site up at mp3.com, and am fully aware that people may download my music and do whatever they want with it. That excites me, though - it means they liked it. For 3 minutes they listened to me instead of Ricky Martin. I am of the opinion that the mp3 'revolution' is helping musicians to network and connect, share ideas and recording tips, etc. Most of the musicians I know aren't out to become mega-billionaires. They just want to be able to make a living off their music. (Some of us don't even have that much ambition - I have a pretty sweet day job, and do music on the weekends.) That's not to say that if, oh, Grand Royal dug my sound and wanted to sign me up for a 3 album deal I wouldn't think long and hard about it.

Ultimately I don't see this as being an issue of how musicians are wanting to get airplay and TV time. It's about artists signing away their rights to big recording companies, who in turn market them, squeeze their popularity dry and then move on to the next big cash cow.

And let's not forget the unwashed millions who buy the drek they play on FM top 40, people whose favorite song changes every week, who are supporting the MTV culture instead of searching out unique and unsigned artists.

Your life is one of inconsistency, you bounce from job to job, relationship to relationship, never quite making that final connection. (On the other hand, you avoid conflict at all cost.) People see you as something of an enigma, following a different path than your peers. Since the conditions at the time of your birth will not come around again for another 700 years or so, you will never find contentment in this life. Hope that you are born again under a planet with a shorter orbit.

  13. Voter apathy on Net Voting in California · · Score: 1

I heard this story on NPR yesterday (while stuck in snow and traffic - erg!) and they only briefly touched on the issue of voter apathy. 'Oh the internet will get all the 20-somethings to vote' was about the extent of it. While I will say that I don't vote as often as I could/should due to schedules/weather/PMS/etc., I believe that for the majority of my peers voter apathy rests with political distrust and disinterest. The public schools may require that you learn about the system but it's done in a very inefficient manner (I think I got a 'B' in 12th grade Government class, but ask me how a bill becomes law - ???).
What's needed is for the youth of this country to be shown, not told, how the government works. They have to believe that corruption is beatable. Right now, even I have a hard time believing that.
Technology shmecnology, online voting will happen. It's not a matter of when or even how. It's still an issue of voter apathy.

I look forward to a world where people are able to have Klingon heads and prosthetic tails if they want to, and no one thinks them 'unhireable' for it.
By lamenting the way this guy spends his government loan stipend and circus checks you are simply keeping alive the old curmugeonly view of societal norms. I believe that if people were more free to express themselves as they saw fit without fear of humiliation, exclusion and retribution, then we would see less crime, less suicide, less violence against those who represent the 'norm'. I am thinking of Columbine - I heard the recordings those boys made, joking on their upright Christian classmates... It made me shake my head. If we, as a society, took more notice of the things right and wrong around us - but here's where the problem is. Who decides what's right? We can't fix ANYTHING until we become more tolerant of each other's differences. That means that the pious right-wing NRA guy has to respect the Latino transvestite VooDoo Priestess and vice versa. What's right for me may not be right for you, but neither of us has the right to make that call for the other.
Not trying to flame, honest. I think you are more or less on the side of freaks, but just wanted to point out it's not as simple as finding about 1,000 other ways to express one's creativity. Why should anyone have to compromise their vision?

Astrology isn't about predicting events, it's about going with the flow of energy, living in tune with the motions of the heavens, and seeking out the patterns in your life. Sounds like New Age hippie talk to most of you, I imagine, but like any religion or form of divination, you have to have a little blind faith. A real astrologer works mathematical equations and ponders the mysteries of life...those psychic hotlines give astrology a bad rap.
