But the REAL issue of why he's on trial is because McLean's magazine (Canada's largest circulated magazine) has him as a regular contributer while refusing to let anyone offer a rebuttal. So, people complained.

So a privately-owned business should be forced by government to give away wordspace because of some peoples' hurt feelings? Do you know much about this issue? Do you know the conviction rate of the HRCs? Are you aware of the tactics used by the HRCs?

This whole thing is about the right to not be offended. Most important is the fact that any individual can file a complaint and legally go after (paid by the government) anyone they think has slighted or defamed them or said nasty words against them. Of course, the defendant has to foot all his/her own legal expenses.

It's actually a free speech issue and I'll leave out my own prejudices and let readers decide for themselves.

Good point. But nVidia charges an extreme amount for the Quadro cards and I don't see any appreciable difference (network speed is a bigger factor, actually). Caveat emptor I guess.

My bitching is probably more better pointed towards the CAD magazines who are always touting the latest software and hardware (completely honestly, unbiased and critical of course).

The market is so specialized and narrow that there's little competition or feedback from actual users, and the software is so expensive and rapidly changing that no outfit that values their ad revenues dares to set up reliable test rigs and keep them current.

You'll likely never know what I'm talking about because the real world software where this is important is hideously expensive and esoteric. Download PDMS or SmartPlant cracks (if they are even available) and see if you can get them to work.

That's the trick - there are so many combinations that a apples-to-apples comparison is impossible (and so expensive), so people go along with whatever the existing trend is.

I've not seen noticeable differences between a Quadro 256MB card and a generic 128MB card but perhaps my applications are different from other users'.

  11. Just Pencil-in the Broken Trace on NVIDIA GeForce To Quadro Software Mod · · Score: 5, Interesting

I work in an engineering field where we use Quadro cards for visualization of largish process plants in an AutoCAD 3D environment.

This type of work is not as intensive as 3D animation.

Over the years I've seen not much difference between "professional" and "consumer" video cards even though the cost between the two can be $600 or more.

Even with relatively lame, $200 cards the walkthrus are pretty responsive when using the proper viewing software (the "walkthrus" are typically specially created for responsiveness so we can zoom to detail we need to see).

Perhaps sluggish performance is a result of demos given by people who intentionally attach one entire GB of 3D models to one session and use that to demonstrate (even though no 3D modeler would ever do such a thing).

Bah, keyboard command input is the way to go for CAD, and certain companies keep moving around and redefining the cute icons so that veterans that don't follow all the latest trends get lost with new releases.

When I see a 35 year veteran stumbling around trying to plot a 22x34 to scale I know something's wrong.

Many changes are/were made to uncomplicate the work of CAD support drones, not for the fricking guys/gals that actually do the REAL work. That was a nice sneaky slide into making ones self irreplaceable and the designers resent it.

I think the answer that you are looking for is that it allows joe sixpack (joe bloggs) to use a computer in a more natural fashion.

Is there a "natural fashion" to use a computer?

As a drafting table-trained draftsman (back 25 years or so ago) I had to learn how to interpret the real world at a small scale. Going to CAD and a 14" screen was tough because I couldn't see the extents of my normal 22"x34" (or larger - some older P&IDs were on scrolls many feet long) field of view. Later I used dual 21" CRTs, then went to 4 22" LCDs and am now using a single 30" monitor.

None of these solutions are "natural", since zooming around inside an active screen is extremely artificial. On the other hand, old draftsmen will be all dead soon, so this perception of natural will go away.
