Is there a competition to see who can get the lowest possible karma? That seems to be the only thing that can explain all of this trolling everytime a posting opens up. Just a thought.
Its seems that linus has had some real problems merging anything with the recent kernels. Many people have been complaining about this. I heard that linus was to 'appoint' someone to take care of this since he recognized that the job wasn't getting done by himself. That, like many other things, has not materialized. I look at it this way: if linus can't get it done, he needs to get someone who can.
People speak of incompatibilities with IE-specific sites and mozilla. I don't know about the rest of you, but would you mind giving me some sites that wont render correctly? I have failed to find any sites that do not render adaquately (by adaquately, I mean sites that get the job done... i.e. microsoft.com, when viewed in Mozilla, doesn't show those drop-down menus, yet it doesn't hinder my ability to traverse the site and find what I am looking for. The same applies to nvidia's site.) Since most of the sites that I encounter use PHP, as any good site should, I never have any problems. Because of this, I feel that negative judgement on mozilla, based on the fact that some reviewer visits totally obscure pages that idiots wrote to save time, is simply unwarrented and misguided. This judgement should not be passed on Mozilla nor on Microsoft or IE. It should be passed on the 'developers' who write code that is browser-specific, non-standards compliant, and to be simply put, garbage.
it uses 3 times the memory space as IE. I thought it was supposed to be more efficient?
Yes... Do you know why??? Because most of IE is integrated into the explorer UI. Most of the bulk of Internet Explorer lies there. When you fire up mozilla, it has to start everything, the rendering engine, its own UI, etc. If you take that into account, Mozilla is far more efficient. Think of it this way: take the time that it takes the explorer shell to start and add the time that it takes for IE to start. Also, add the memory usage. Then compare to mozilla. Have a nice day.
This is a VERY old story. Nonetheless, it is still quite amazing that a small town banded together to set up their own dsl server, DSLAM, servers, routers and all. I only wish that my neighborhood had done that. Of course, I am too lazy to organize.
Hah: you Americans think the Chinese have it bad, and are missing all the best content on the net? If you only knew what YOUR country has been blocking off from YOU! And you don't even know it's being done!
And where might you be from, oh free one? I can tell you that I am not blocked from a damn thing. Maybe if you show some proof of this, I might think twice. The only thing blocking off Americans is our majority's inability to speak many languages. Some of us can (or can use da fish) and learn these stories. But believe me, we aren't blocked.
How can you state what people in the US want? You, judging from your article, aren't even a US citizen, nor do you live here. How can you so boldly state what we believe or feel? We want to know what is happening, whether it be good or bad. Believe me, no one in the US believes that the media tells the entire truth.
A lot actually. You need to convince the d00d to kill him/her self. Whats the easiest way to do it: give the guy thousands of dollars so that he can set his family up for life. Just a thought.
A lot of people simply do not understand why pot is illegal. Its not because of its effect on you or anything else. These days, its more because of the people that it comes from. By buying and using it, you are supporting these third-world drug cartels (or some d00d that grows the stuff under some special lights in a garage) that engage in some very risky business. The government dug themselves a hole on this one. They could have easily legalized the drug and then FDA tested, approved, and placed special guidlines on its manufacture. Legalizing pot would also put the substance in more accessable reach to minors. I don't mind an adult, chilling at home, lighting up a joint and having a good time. Its not something I would do. However, it is the last thing I would want to see in the hands of a 12, 13 year old child (that seems to be a prime age for the beginnings of cigarette smoking). Just a thought.
LOL - First they mod you down as flamebait and then they mod you up for defending your 'flamebait'. I don't even see how your original thread was flamebait to begin with. I had best stop using the word 'flamebait' before I become 'flamebait'. What is this discussion about again?
Now, do I really need to explain to you why the ideal user account's home directory is/dev/null??? I suppose I do. I would rather all of their data and important information fade into non-existence on our storage array rather than take up precious space that 'rightfully' belongs to my mp3 collection. Of course I know this wont work, but wouldn't it be great if did? Thanks for disecting my sig, oh sig-less one.
LOL - I knew i was gonna get flamed sooner or later... Lets start:
"What about all the GNU software on their linux distro? That ISN'T a business: It's free work done by volunteers. Also, it seems that distro's done by the actual users , like Slackware, Debian, Pentagram Linux (whatever the one is you 'summon' packages (cool, but hate the download)), are of much better quality than business linux packages. Anyways, the last time I tried swapping kernels on RH (6.1), I ended up with kernel panic (and yes, I did it right).
And your point??? Did i say anything about these organizations? If its a FREE group, non-profit, its obviously going to work fine for them.
"See everybody.. He's crying already."
If i have to explain this to you, you aren't worth my time anyway
Cause it WASN'T started at businesses. It was started as a volunteers donating to their cause (whatever it may be). Enough different causes created what Linux (the whole conglomerate OS) is today.
Thank you for explaining that to me, oh wise one. That whole concept just perplexed me... I see clearly now. Now, what was the point in telling me that??? I know this already. It obviously works great as a NOT-FOR-PROFIT model. As for a profitable business enterprise, it makes a great splash (RedHat's IPO) but doesn't last.
They've managed to do it so far. They are a service company than an OS one. "You tell us what you want and we'll design it for this price. MS can do at 2x the hardware and 10x the price. Who do you want?"
Wah... they aren't providing free binaries, wah wah, boo hoo hoo. Its seems you people have gotten so used to having stuff handed to you that you forgot the one important rule in business: YOU HAVE TO MAKE MONEY TO STAY IN BUSINESS. The whole free software, give it away, download it for free strategy is a bad system to base a business off of. Even RedHat is having a miserable time making money (let me rephrase: staying profitable) off of a free operating system. Here is one thing: they are providing the source for free... Jesus christ, what more do you want? A suse rep. to come to your door and install it for you???? Someone is bound to compile it and distribute binary copies to everyone. Just relax, stop complaining, and someone please inform me, with your infinite wisdom, why UL is destined to fail? I just don't see it.
I think that if the killer was actually a sexual predator, Williams would have pulled that off perfectly. He doesn't seem like a killer, but he could pass as a sexual predator. Just a thought.
I don't speak for everyone, but it seems the reason that not as many people are using development kernels is because the 2.4.x series has all of the hardware support that most of us need. I have yet to come across a device that my 2.4.18 cannot support. The only reason I used the 2.3.x kernels when they were released was because 2.2.x was not cutting it in terms of hardware support. Now, I may just want to try 2.5.x just to see the difference in performance with that preemt patch, but I may be able to contain my excitement until 2.6 rolls out.
I already have to dual-boot to watch DVDs (I must be an idiot, because deCSS makes it sooo easy to pirate DVDs, and I can't even get the SOB to play them).
Haven't you heard of XINE with the d5d plugin??? I play my DVDs perfectly with it. Its even faster than Windozes' players. I would hate to dual boot just to watch some movies. Just a thought.
There are too many other projects out there right now for Caldera to be messing around with SCO. I think its attention should be on this United Linux thing (tacky name btw). Get that running on IA64 with enterprise features and reliability. Give SCO to the OSS developers that may want to borrow a few ideas. In addition, what does caldera have to gain from continuing work on an OS which is being replaced by more competent, open sourced equivalents (not quite equivalent)? I think it would help them to support the platform (for those unfortunate souls still clung to it) financially, but its time to phase it out. As for 'United Linux', I think I will keep my box 'United' with a clean copy of slack.
I think it is quite interesting how slack has different boot kernels for different hardware configs for the install. Thats a pretty unique approach in my opinion. I also think that the installer rocks. Its very easy to use (even if it isn't 'Mandrake-esque') and I love curses programs. I do have a question though (haven't found the answer in the changelog). Does anyone know if there is an installer image with the base ISO that has a kernel supporting USB HID devices? The PS/2 ports on my best machine are fried and I only use USB for keyboard and mouse. I know I can download the image but I also don't have a floppy drive on that machine. Any help would be appreciated.
I wouldn't say its an oxymoron. Consider what I am running it on. 1.2 ghz athlon with 512 megs of ram. it whips all of that 'fluff' into shape. Also consider what I am comparing it to. If I wanted just raw speed and no frills, I would be running afterstep. Its almost non-existent when it comes to the dent it puts in resources. Or perhaps windowmaker. I like E cuz its good looking, has nice themes, and has menus that are really easy to configure.
I tried 3.0. I was kinda impressed with the fancy eye candy and stuff. It was, however, too much environment for me. Too 'in-my-face'. Kudos to the kde team, but I think i'll stick with my basic, light-weight window manager (Enlightenment) and its simple, 'click-on-the-desktop' menus.
Actually, its not big companies. I think its just govt. and universities. Well, with the exception of maybe cisco or M$. Ah well. My university is on the internet2, however we really can't utilize it. Does anyone know if it's on IPv6 or what?
Is there a competition to see who can get the lowest possible karma? That seems to be the only thing that can explain all of this trolling everytime a posting opens up. Just a thought.
Im stuck in the middle with trolls... ew, gross!!!
