Computers by themselves are not magic teachers. They wont replace quality teachers but they can with proper application assist in education. I think most of the problem with computers in school is that people have the wrong expectations. It's just a tool. Like any tool you have to know how to use it properly and what it can and can not do.
Too bad really. I could see using meego, android makes me want an Ipad. But Ipad makes me want a meego. I can't have a meego though....it's a vicious circle. I'll probably settle for a color nook. With cyanogen on it at least it'll be useful and cheap. It's not what I really want though, I've been waiting a year now for someone to make a decent tablet that will run a real linux os. I guess it's not gonna happen.
It's great for reading a book or watching a movie. If those are your primary uses then you've got it made. For web browsing or much of anything else it sucks. I got rid of my dell 1545 because of the widescreen. 1366x786 sucks for what I want to do. If I want to watch movies I've got a TV for that. For a computer I want something more along the lines of 1440x900. I downgrade to a dell d630 just for the better screen.
The free flow of information is one of the greatest threats to governmental control. They tremble in fear that the mob could actual organize on the fly. If you notice the first thing the Libyan tryrant did was to try to shut down the internet and cell phone access. Government is a necessary evil and that government that governs least is the least evil.
Heh, not surprising really. Apple will do what they have to do. If it requires using Micro$oft services they'll bite the bullet and do it. You can bet somewhere they've got a team working on an alternative that gives them total control. Apple is all about control. This is just a compromise they were forced to so they can provide the kind of service they need until their own solution is ready.
Almost all technology improvements today are just refinements or new uses of old tech. Look at what we do with nuclear power. We boiled water for steam with coal. Now we boil water with nuclear for steam. We only look tall because we're standing on the shoulders of giants.
I know this principle was used a couple of decades before the prius by some university that was building an experimental 100+ mpg auto. Don't know who patented it or even if it is patented. It might even be a lot older than that.
This is especially true if you are going to use linux. Hardware support is better than it used to be but it's still good to pick and choose hardware that's linux friendly.
It's a windows world. Everyone is used to the simplest things requiring huge resources. When we all get 1 gigabit internet connections they'll come out with something that will be so bloated you'll need 3 hours to download the Gettysburg Address.
Essentially hell, it is harassment. The non-stop assault of these assholes as they swarm my mail box makes me see red. They should be required by law to provide a valid return email account so I can e-mail them back and tell them how little I appreciate them sending me their shit.
I don't know that Jack Tramiel really did all that much damage to Atari. By the time he took over Atari was already reeling. The clones were stomping on everyone by that time.
It is if you want anything with serious horsepower. Sure, a commodity PC will work fine for most things but if you want 8 cores and 64gb of ram with multiple video cards you'll be better off building it yourself.
While I can't imagine installing an optical drive in a computer an external one is handy for software that still ships on optical media as well as ripping the occasional cd or dvd. I use my external drive less and less but I know if I didn't have it I'd have to borrow someone else's sooner or later.
I recently ran into a guy who owns a race car. He has a program that logs sensors and does some other stuff for his car. He recently bought a new computer after his old one running xp died. The new computer runs win7 and he was telling me how horrible it worked with his software. He stated he had bought the computer just to run this one program and that it had never been hooked to the internet and asked if it was possible that it came with some kind of malware on it. I'm considered a computer "expert" where I work although it's really just a hobby for me and I explained to him that I didn't really fool with windows much since I mostly run linux on my systems but after asking him a few more questions it occured to me that he had never done any windows updates. I know the shitty computers we have at work update all the time and they run 7 so I advised him to hook to the internet and ONLY connect to windows update and download and install all the updates and fixes. Bingo! What took hours now runs in a few minutes. He was amazed at the incredible difference it made. I don't know if it was actually windows software specifically. It might have been a java update as far as I know. Regardless updates are important with any windows os.
That's one thing I guess. Even so I could care less about this. If what's left of atari wants to slice it's own throat that's their business. Stupid is as stupid does and suing the few remaining fans they have ranks right up there. That's bean counters for ya.
How about getting something for your money though? Why, instead of just giving them a pile of money they could then steal, didn't the Government buy solar panels for every single Government building in the country? Then, instead of just a bankrupt company with rich thieves slinking away, they would actually have....solar panels! This would reduce the electric bill the Government has to pay. It would produce jobs to make panels. It would, hopefully, drive down the cost of panels through mass production. Instead they threw the money in a hole and got nothing for it except egg on their face.

Careful there, somebody might not realize you're joking.

I'm thinking the Color Nook is about the best Android Tablet out there for the money.
Nah! You noticed you were wrong. The total idiots never figure that out.

I've used tiny XP from time to time in virtualbox when I have something that wont run in wine. It really does work well in a virtual environment.

Lots of people would. For a laugh or nostalgia. Would they pay for the privilege? I doubt it.

I meant the UI unity, not Ubuntu.
I don't jest, and my name is not Shirley.
No, don't. Unity sucks hard enough.
Reminds me of Medhi Ali and Irving Gould. They wrote a book called how to turn a Billion dollar company into nothing in less than 5 years.
