What makes you think this is any different from storing calendar appointments on Yahoo's calendar offering? It's everyone choice whether or not to use the free services Google or any other companies decides to offer up.

  2. Re:Sigh... on How Sony's HD Audio Player Falls Short · · Score: 1

Maybe I'm just one of those "weird" people who don't swap music with other people... I have my own personal collection I listen to and that's mostly it. Maybe it helps that most of my friends don't listen to the same genres that I do. I guess I'm getting over the whole "I need lots of free music" thing. I like owning my music.

  3. Sigh... on How Sony's HD Audio Player Falls Short · · Score: 2, Interesting

So my original story sent over a week ago about this new player wasn't good enough? Had to wait for a post that made Sony sound like it sucks, eh? Seems like the typical /. way... oh well. FWIW, someone else on that thread got the HD3 and didn't notice and hiss issues with the device. I'm still looking forward to its release here in the states.

Granted, the 2100 song transfer was all mp3's, which is likely being wrapped in some DRM on the device and not the native ATRAC3plus format. Regardless, I agree that it's still slow. But then again, how often does one swap out that many songs on and off a DAP?

In the meantime, I'll wait for the "SONY SUCKS! APPLE RULES!" posts to suck up more internet bandwidth and database server space.

At least with Cingular, they've never crippled any BT phones that I've purchased. Everything works as advertised here. Headsets, file transfer to/from a computer, you name it. You should have no problems here...

S/MIME is new to this release, AFAIK. A place to start looking is here. The Evo developers post some of their latest work and sometimes have screenshots for those who like that sort of thing. :)

  6. Re:No Purchase Necessary? on Instant Messaging Giveaway · · Score: 1

Quite true. I see this in rules all the time, working for a promotions agency and all. The curious thing would be to see if MS will send these instant messages to anybody logged on to MSN Messenger, including those who use GAIM or Trillian as the client, but according to the article you have to enter on a website and upgrade to MSN Messenger 6. Sounds like Gaim and trillian users are out of luck, as are people who aren't logged in during the day. Oh well.

  7. Re:MDLP on Music Companies Bemoan New High-Cap Portables · · Score: 1

What they'll probably do is allow recording of the ATRAC3 encoded files to a CD. This is how their NetMD software stores audio files on your computer. http://www.minidisc.org/NetMD_faq.html I think this is also how their current Network Walkman portables work. Stores the Encoded files to a memory stick. This whole system will probably include some form of DRM, as it's Sony we're talking about.

NOTE TO OUR CUSTOMERS: As you may know, IEEE802.11g is slated to be certified by the Wi-Fi Alliance in mid 2003. We understand this could affect current 802.11g technology. We are dedicated to ensuring that our customers have the most current and reliable products available on the market today. If the certification materially changes the principal operating features of our pre-standard 802.11g products, we will replace or upgrade any of those products at no charge and provide toll-free technical support. We thank you for your loyalty and confidence in our products.

So in case anything changes they're guaranteeing you'll have what works. That's pretty cool if you ask me. I've worked with these guys before and have purchased a number of AP's and cards and they work well. People are nice to work with too.

  9. Re:Don't allow them to use their local hard drives on Making Users Back Up Important Data? · · Score: 1

This is something I've been working through for the past 2 years at my current company. The struggle is that almost every employee (including myself) is quite mobile, traveling almost every week. The office I'm in is almost all Windows 2000 notebooks + 1 NT4 Server (don't ask). All other servers and myself are running some flavor of Linux.

The higher-ups have also asked that users work data is available on the network at any time, just in case. AFAIK, this leaves out Retrospect as a client, since I think it only backs up to tape or other removable media by default. Somebody correct me if I'm wrong. So this left me to use logon scripts to backup important folders (My Documents, email). Has anyone out there come up with better solutions for backing up those mobile users, but also keeping their work data available for others in the office when they're out?
