  1. PhotoShop prices on GIMP And OS X · · Score: 1
The GIMP to me is the UNIX equal to PhotoShop elements which was recently released. It's basically a stripped down PhotoShop for home users. The price of PhotoShop Elements is 99$, to me this is totally affordable, better than running rootlessX (yuk) and a much better experience.

I bought a mac and OSX specifically to get away from X windows while retaining a UNIX command line. I'll be damned if I install X to run the GIMP, I'd rather dish out 99$ and get a native app (when it's actually native btw).

Why is it everything comes down to games? Do you folks realize that less than 5% of all Mac users play any games on their machines at all, let alone at 640x480 which is a pretty stupid resolution to begin with considering any decent over the counter video card can run quake3 etc... at 1024x768 or better. Grow up, games have very little to do with a platforms viability. If you read the tech specs it very specifically talks about publishing, graphics design and other "work" related aspects before mentioning games.

Some people have lives folks, especially this time of year, water skiing, hiking, family time, camping etc..... The majority of the problems I have with are it's numerous libraries, mostly glibc. Linux isn't a drop in replacement for a FreeBSD server, there are a multitude of reasons why FreeBSD is better as a server, reasons ranging from it's network stack to it's ports collection. It isn't a matter of pulling the parts out and ading in the ones you want, if it was I would pull out the linux kernel, glibc and in the case of red hat and mandrake, RPM and replace them with the freebsd kernel and ports, but then I would have freebsd wouldn't I? 14. This is a bad attitude on FreeBSD 4.1.1 vs. Linux 2.4 · · Score: 1

I work with both operating systems, more so with Free and Open BSD. My philosophy has always been, "Use the right tool for the right job". This is especially true with UNIX distros. UNIX has forked in so many ways for a reason.

I use freebsd on most of my servers, it's much more stable and easier to manage than most linux distros, emphasis on MOST. I run into a lot of issues with linux ranging from SMP issues in glibc to basic load problems and threading.

Now on the flip side of this coin, FreeBSD makes a horrendous desktop OS offering really poor sound card support and I have yet to come across a decent Xserver for my geforce card.

Use the right tool for the job, FreeBSD is a better server hands down for most purposes, Linux makes a damn fine server as well, especially when we talk about beowulf clusters. FreeBSD and Linux are not competing with each other, I think it's a shame that advocates of either operating system make it appear as if they are.

I can only think that people wouldn't buy used books if the new ones weren't so over priced. I mean how many times have you paid 50+ dollars for an O'Reilly animal book? I spent 2k this year on books alone. Thats astonishing considering I can buy a DVD for 20 bucks and chances are the DVD will have more repeat value. DVD's and CD's are over priced in my opinion as well, but they don't hold a candle to the prices of books these days.
