Anonymous free speech is a by-product of public free speech and is useless if the society doesn't allow public free speech from a known individual. The uncited source is useless if the government doesn't allow the brave individual to include their reference in a public, non-anonymous article. Without someone, anyone standing up to vouch for a story, publicly, anonymous free speech is easily dismissed, easily forgotten, easily covered up.
What good would the Deep Throat informant have done if Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein didn't publicly vouch for his information?
What are the Federalist Papers without people like Patrick Henry publicly stating "Give me Liberty or give me death?"
Which affected Iran and the world more? Reading @persiankiwi's tweets or seeing Neda Agha-Soltan, dying on a street with the entire world watching?
Better question: Why do we, the West, think it is our right be be ahead of China? Aren't 1.3 billion people allowed to have a quality of life close to ours? All things considered, why shouldn't Europe+USA's population of 1.1 billion be out produced by China's 1.3?
Maybe I'm old fashioned, but I really don't like the idea of any kind of magnet anywhere near my PC. I get nervous if anything gets close to my speakers. Maybe that's just a relic of floppy disc/CRT days.
"... think about the problems created by using software that actually belongs to someone else..." WTF does that mean? Are you suggesting that MS owes everyone free updates to their operating systems forever? How does no longer creating patches make the software any less yours?
What does that say about Linux distributions that have support cut-off dates, like Ubuntu? Do you no longer own your copy of Ubuntu because your LTS version is past it's expiration date?
Where does it say and when has MS EVER implied that your operating system that came over a DECADE ago should still be supported?
"these little POS solutions suddenly become the most critical production apps without anyone telling IT".. You mean, other than the time when the manager asked IT if they could create a solution from scratch, and instead got an excuse from designed to make the manager want to give up on the solution that is urgently needed.
"smart enough to get out of Jury Duty'"... Please, enough with the ancient comedy routine. There are many people, myself included, who don't try to weasel out of their civic duty. I guess it's better this way, though. I really don't want someone who cares so little about the legal system to decide my fate if I were ever arrested for something.
What AMD is trying to say is that they want to be able to give a game developer millions of dollars to "persuade" them into "optimizing" their game to such a point where it you essentially can't play their game with anything other than an AMD video card.
No thanks. I would rather my game's graphics be a little more inefficient and not have to worry if my brand new nVidia card will play an AMD optimized game at all.
Dear/. taggers: Google doesn't care about version number at all. It is just an arbitrary number signifying their major releases (which happens every six weeks or so). Want to know how little Google cares about version number? Go to google.com/chrome . Try to find a version number. Go to Google's Chrome blog ( http://chrome.blogspot.com/ ). Try to find a version number. Google's NEVER promoted a new release of Chrome with the version number. The only people to do so are other sites who are seemingly compelled to attach a number to the new release. The number is there but only for development purposes.
Another fun fact about Chrome versioning: Versions between Developer, Beta, and Release never share the same version number. If it changes development channel, the number is increased. You'll never see a version 11.0.331.31 Beta turn into a 11.0.331.31 Release.
"Why can't we have diplomacy without back room deals? Why cant peoples REAL opinions be exposed and known.
Have you paid to politics lately? How much work has been done between the Democrats and the Republicans? None. Why? Because as long as there's someone watching, politicians will do everything they can to save face with their constituents instead of compromising. Diplomacy is Congressional politics where EVERYTHING they do is compromise. There's no 60 person, filibuster-proof majority in diplomacy.
Are Wikipedia admins serious? Do they really think that most of the bad press will be against Verizon if they block VZ's ip range? That's hilariously egotistical. No, if Wikipedia blocks Verizon customers from editing, most if not all the bad PR will be aimed squarely at Wikipedia for over-reacting to a single troll. Perhaps the Wikipedia admins are so big-headed that can't possibly see why Verizon will not, ever, care about their individual site enough to track down a single vandal.
Until Google actually makes a statement on this, I'm just writing it off as a single Google employee misrepresenting company opinion and a (relatively) small website complaining to a favorable audience instead of doing the appropriate thing and appealing to someone else at Google.
My machine was auto-updated to JRE 1.6.0 Update 21 (the newest available on October 3) when it was infected with three different Java trojans and a downloader using two different Java exploits.
Perhaps Java is a buggy piece of shit that should be uninstalled immediately.
Maybe in a couple cases, but not mine. I was infected with the following on October 3, using JRE 1.6.0 Update 21, which was the newest build available when I was infected.
So, adding a third party application that doesn't integrate as well as the built-in version takes care of one point. You have a program that makes windows snap to the side of the screen? A program that adds taskbar jumplists? A program that makes networking easier than W7's? A program that adds a Libraries function that lets me include folders from multiple sources into one place? A program that collects taskbar notifications into a single window? A program that lets me use my 6 GB of RAM on XP? A program that sets up Homegroup filesharing? A program that lets me see what programs are using the network connection and what those programs are connection too and how much each of the network each of the programs are using? A program that lets me play DirectX 11 games? A program that lets me burn Blu-Ray discs natively? A program that alerts me when something is trying to modify system files? A program that lets me shrink or expand hard drive partitions on the fly?
"How can you possibly aim with those sticks?" Pretty easily actually. But you're intentionally being dense, right? That's like asking how someone could ever play a flight sim using a mouse and keyboard instead of a joystick, or how could anyone ever use a mouse in Photoshop instead of a WACOM tablet. Have you not tried it out because you have some irrational attachment to a PC? Do you not know anyone with a console and a copy of Command and Conquer?
As for turn-based strategy games, I liked Civilization Revolution on Xbox 360 much better than I liked Civilization IV on PC. (Civ V beats everything, though)
But yeah... So I was driving down the road with my Droid X in it's car mount, using an adapter to stream Pandora from my phone to my car stereo, all while I had Google Navigation giving me directions. That's when I decided that I really, really loved my phone.
I suppose location matters most in the survey. Did they do a geographic spread representative of the country or did they stick to urban centers? In the somewhat rural area in which I live, almost no one uses AT&T because they can barely get any reception. In fact, if I were to travel five miles north and stand downtown of the nearest town, I would get no AT&T reception at all. This while I get maximum Verizon signal do to the huge tower that's nearby.
5 times as bright as a kerosene lamp? For $15? Why is it then, that other LED lightbulbs with a comparable brightness and no solar powered extras cost $50+ each?
The main reason I'll only buy e-ink displays is battery life. I would rather have a device that has 1 week+ of usable time than one that has to be recharged every 8 hours or less.

They could be paid $500/week, but that still wouldn't make up for the fact that they're forced to work 70 hour work weeks.
But how would you pretend to work at Foxconn where they have a production quota?

V8 isn't a benchmark. It is a Javascript rendering engine. V8 performance IS Javascript performance in Chrome.

Cue the 300 wikileaks "mirrors" that serve up 90% advertising, 5% malware, and 5% leaks?

Or I could just use Windows 7. Just saying...
