  1. Re:Smart move on Living with Darth Vader · · Score: 1

Some classic SF could be interesting. For example, Asimov's Foundation series, or Niven's Known Space series. The ringworld alone has room for a rather large game.

Few people know this now, but Time Warner Interactive released a Return to Ringworld game in 1994. This is a DOS VGA game, requires hard disk with 2MB available, 386/25, 640k RAM and a CD ROM drive capable of 150KB/sec.

How do I know this? I found a copy at a used computer store. I collect classic computers, I really like Niven and the Ringworld novels. I just HAD to have it!

  2. Re:Thawte on Cheap SSL Certificates for Small Websites? · · Score: 1

Yes, Thawte is Verisign, however they offer cheaper certs. I've used Thawte for the last 6 years. I have 0 complains about them. They have live tech support over IRC and e-mail. They operate in many countries. They have good instructions for just about very SSL server out there, even some obscure ones. Once they rushed a cert for me in less then 24 hours. 200 USD for the cert, 150 USD for renewals. -Philip

How about "We won't be porting our apps to Linux because that will kill sales of our less than useless OS" isn't that a bit closer to the truth?

Why use Office? I've been using OpenOffce.org for a week now and guess what? IT KICKS ASS! So now I'm going to be going around installing Linux and OpenOffice on all the old computers people want me to repaire. IMHO, linux for the common mortal has arrived.

  4. WAIT! on Lord of The Rings DVD, Now or Later? · · Score: 1

My bro-in-law (who rents part of my house) bought this version. I've seen it twice this week. This version is NOT the one in the theatre. Little bits here and there have been cut out. Some of the cuts are good (cf the ring changing sides of the table), some are a tad annoying (only 3 black riders glide past the Butterburl (sp?)).

So my advice is to rent this version once or twice, to get your LOTR fix.

BTW, can I take this moment to complain about this movie? IT'S TOO GOOD! I was watching it in december and suddenly realised that DAMN i'm going to have to break down and buy a TV and DVD player. I'd been refusing to buy a player because of the DeCSS and DRM crap. And I'm philosophically opposed to television. But yesterday I bought a 32 inch screen and hooked it up to my bro-in-law's player in the basement (remember, he rents part of my house). *sigh* I guess we now know what my principals cost :)
