in a perfect world, all professors would have absolute and complete knowledge on every topic they teach, and a firm grasp on any topic they might come across in class.
however, this is not a perfect world.
at my lovely college(GVSU), most of the professors I've had are incompetent, can't teach, or just plain don't know the subject matter. One of my Profs has went so far as using ANOTHER Professors code to teach his classes(IRONY) while not even understanding it. When my classmates asked him for help because none of it made sense, he admitted he only know what it was SUPPOSED to do, not if (or how) it actually worked.
so yeah, I'm disenfranchised with the the entire college situation. there are only a handful of Professors in the CS department who 'have a clue.'
I'd say that I seriously spend about 80-90% of my time working on classwork with someone else because it just doesn't make sense(with the rare exception of Prof. Wolffe- his classes are difficult, and you learn a ton).
I personally learn better having a colleague explain it to me than a professor, simply because I either have a hard time understanding my professor(I can't comprehend accents very well) or the professor just doesn't have a clue.
and don't even get me STARTED on Gen-Ed's!
but then again in CS, it's all about the degree- I occasionally forget I'm supposed to teach myself everything.
...when I storm the oracle compound and force Ellison to quit trying to read my mind?
seriously, this guys out of control. database containing everbit of info about you !=good.
the day they implement it, I'm moving to canada or New Zealand. and I'm bringing all my toys as well. if it were in my power, I'd never buy any oracle products- however, I'm realistic in the fact that I'll never be able to AFFORD them, so I'm gonna waste my time and energy on GeekPAC.
we have to find out which companies are complying and petition the hell out of the companies. write snail mail to their CTO's...
make sure you include pictures of ALL of your hardware- if they see 5000 people write in with 30 assorted PCI cards apeice, they're gonna take notice(hopefully).
microsoft can't lock you out if the companies show you the standards on how the stuff works- also include references to other companies who've agreed to expose their "api"s... show them that you CAN take your business elsewhere.
stand up for your consumer rights, and let the companies know it'll be a big mistake.
check mr. williamson's bank accounts to see if he got any lump sums in the last month or two....
wouldn't that be a kicker! :)
i could totally see this being a power play by MS- buy out a loud voice of the competitor and have them downplay their products(obviously they'd make sure it wasn't tracable back to them).
think about this- what would happen to.NET if bill gates was to say(while drunk and near a microphone), "are you kidding me- I'm not trusting THAT with my credit card numbers!"
or senator hollings was to say "yeah, I use MP3's at home, but I'm not a pirate, I fight piracy"
what that would do to microsoft's shareholders? how about hollings credibility?
what worries me is that if it's illegal to "distribute" malicious code, what about the millions of people around the US who had nimida or any other "forwarding virus"... like outlook- anyone who got a macro virus is technically guilty(i think).
what I've found works if get another machine in there(with bosses permission of course- it could be a 266 with 64 megs of ram, or a laptop even), and tell him you wish to run squid cache proxy for the office to test it out... tell him that it'll be a cut on the huge bandwidth costs(if they're as clueless as you implied).
After that, run samba on it. Show him how you can use it as a file sharing device. get your immediate boss really warmed up to the Idea. Shovel the regular propaganda.
then one day have the CTO walk in as your "completing" some heavy task. when he asks what your doing, say you just broke some sort of backup record by cutting it in half. when he asks how, begin shoveling the propaganda. tell him that if they had all the machines on linux, he'd save the company $X in yearly licensing fees...do some quick math- company pays $X to microsoft/2 (for the machines that just aren't replacable at the moment), which would look real good to his bosses, and he'd probably get a fat bonus.
Tell him if he's interested, you could show him a "test box"(complete with kde 3.0). Tell him how linux has a 24 hour support staff(IRC) and developers around the world constantly working to improve it 24 hours a day. say that it's de-centrallized, so there's no forced upgrades, etc... think it out before you say it tho. don't act excited tho. basically say, "hey, you can make a huge-ass bonus from this if your TRY it." if you don't like it, we can switch back. it's good enough for IBM, so maybe we should try."
this may or may not work, but it worked on my parents and my girlfriend:)
I feel the same way. My college uses IRC for their senior project to communicate with a school in sweden. This is a good example of how decent uses of technology will be blacklisted because some stupid reporter didn't do his homework.
His implication that it aids hackers shows he himself has never experimented with it. I use IRC on a daily basis for help with iptables, html, linux in general, kernel compilation, etc. At my last job, I used IRC to help me learn ASP(don't laugh- it was completely foreign to me). He should have interviewed the people over at irc.debian.org or undernet. better yet, he should have made the interviews over the phone and HELD them in IRC.
this is really just job placement for us techies:)
we get a govt job, work there for a couple of years to get experience(busts out laughing)... then they show us what we COULD be doing, and bam! we get new jobs:)
...is a probe that lands on the planet, drills a hole, and then dangles a hula popper. that will prove if there is life on europa. have it bag up what they catch and blast off the surface again!
ok, this is what I was waiting for. I have a all-in-wonder radeon 7500, and the VDR function was the only thing keeping me from going full boar over to linux. thanks guys, I salute you- when I get a job the check will be in the mail.
now I can finally be free of the oppression! yay:) /me does a happy dance. now if only it wasn't/.'ed so I could check it out:)
if Bertelsman want's to buy crap software for a fortune on the end of it's life cycle, let them. if they close napster, who here is really gonna get screwed.... only the people who subscribed to the business model, proving to those who thought it was crap in the first place that they might be right.
"Hollywood has absolutely no clue about technology."
Aren't these the same people dumping loads of money at DC trying to buy control over our electronics? You'd think, that if they wished to claim rights to design our technology? one would hape that seeing movies like this would make capitol hill think twice about giving something as important as our future technological limitations to people who probably couldn't tell a hard drive from a hardon. (-1 offtopic, flaimbait) sorry guys, I had to.

yes- he's just trying to get home. he's been stuck on this planet for 14 years and no one's come to pick him up, so he decided to build one himself.
sorta like the guy who "invented transparent aluminium"...
putty is a good ssh client for windows- I'm not sure if it's what you meant tho... really configurable, and we we normally reccomend to freshmen who are still using telnet.
-1 offtopic +1 interesting this may seem offtopic, but did anyone notice from the link provided by this parent comment that apache gained 2.59% in one month? microsoft lost.98% do you think this is because of the recent recession, the new version of apache being expected, or the recent security problems in the last year with IIS?
I mean, yes, debian is easy to use, and upgrade, it's installation is fun, and it turns on quicker than my girlfriend, but does it really diserve wood?
ok, well, yea, I guess so. I'm sooo gonna download and burn it the second I can... or maybe I should just dist-upgrade...:) congrats guys, I'll be looking foreward to see if it comes with kde3.0 apache 2.0 and mozilla 1.0 :)
This is a really cool Idea, but I can see the obvious improvements... hood mounted weather proof camera, maybe a digital cam hooked up to a laptop for high quality shots without replacing the film ever 36 miles.
I counted 3304 miles, at 36 miles/roll... that's 92 rolls of film. By the time he gets done $8 per roll and $15 for development... well, 92*(8+15)=$2116 plus tax- that's not including wear and tear or gas.
unless kodak fronted him some film, this seems REALLY expensive... I think I'd like to see someone do this with a really nice digital cam and a laptop for less- just to see if it can be done.
they have 3 ways of going about it- the seti way, where they say, "hey, if you find whatever we're looking for, you can name it!" or the dustributed.net's "find it and we give you cash!"
however that won't work because they're not looking for one specific thing.
what might work is something along the lines of the google toolbar, "here, enjoy this free coolass software, and in return, let us borrow a few cycles."
I think if they make a cool enough screensaver to go with it, it'll sell itself. people like walking in to their computer room with a friend and have their computer look like it's doing something super cool.
that's what I like about seti, however I run dnet, because it offers free money. if they can get some sort of fianancial backing, they might have something to entice people- suchas, "for ever 200,000 words you translate, you put you in a monthly drawing to win $1000"
GVSU's CS policy if you want real fun, read the part where it says,
"You are guilty of academic misconduct if you....."
the wording is poor, and there was a dissent among the CS majors which almost resulted in an ugly scene...

I was gonna reccomend locking the room, burning it, and sending a message to the rest of the "mcsd hopefuls" out there....
of course, you Idea is much better.
good show.
my thoughts exactly. I'm hurting for a ps2 memory card, and I'd rather pay for a used one than buy from best buy.
I use to like them.
not anymore.

I actually think a slashdot movie would be good- I can see it now- kevin smith directing and playing CowboyNeal...

I hope their brainwashing organizers doesn't use the same crack QA team their OS people do. I'd imagine I'd start unconciously yelling things like:
